Kier-La Janisse and Pop-CULTure in Tasmania

The Squeamer speaks over the phone to film writer and programmer, film festival organiser and genre film expert Kier-La Janisse, Canadian, now in residence in Tasmania for the ‘rebooted’ Stranger with My Face International Film Festival 2016. From the career defining book the House of Psychotic Women, to Kid Power! to the now latest from her Spectacular Optical press, Satanic Panic: Pop Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s. There is a whole lotta going on for this awesome and busy woman for the coming year 2016 and Tasmania and Melbourne will benefit greatly!

And what is the Spectacular Optical:

Spectacular Optical Publications is a small-press publisher of cult film and pop culture books based in Canada. In addition to our collectible print books, throughout the year we bring you articles, essays and interviews with established and emerging genre filmmakers, artists, curators and exhibitors on our website.

Named after the sinister institution in David Cronenberg’s Videodrome, Spectacular Optical began as an online journal in April of 2011, in anticipation of the Fantasia Film Festival’s 15th Anniversary. An outgrowth of the festival’s seasonal blog, the journal was the festival’s way of connecting with movie-goers on a year-round basis, and nurturing the exciting talents that are a part of the festival’s lineup each year. In fall of 2012, the journal was bequeathed to its editor Kier-La Janisse, who re-established Spectacular Optical as a small-press publisher of collectible film and pop culture books with an emphasis on supporting Canadian genre film writers and designers.’
