Taika and the Wilderpeople

Sonja Hammer’s full interview with Kiwi film maker, director, writer and producer and actor Taika Waititi who helms the latest of his cinema creations the Box Office sensation Hunt for The Wilderpeople now playing in Australia.

‘…the film also gives weight to issues of substance, such as Ricky’s plight as an abandoned child and Hec’s largely unspoken tragic past. It’s a film about finding a family when your own family fails you, while simultaneously being a knockabout comedy that practically tap dances in its attempts to make us smile.’ WestAustralian Review article.

‘Taika: I know. I’m dropping my own name. But it’s great, because the coolest thing is actually knowing that New Zealanders actually want to see New Zealand films, and to know there’s a reason for us doing this in the first place. If we were just doing this and no one ever came to New Zealand films, I would consider it a waste of money. Funding, that sort of thing. But, because it has a return, and entertains the country and people love it and find that stuff entertaining, it’s really cool.’ excerpt for Huffington Post article.

“I love stories about outlaws and renegades and people fighting against the system, and that idea of a mismatched couple on this mission for freedom really appealed to me,” from article here
