Jocelyn Bishop and Jenn hosted this week as they discussed the new Trans collection, We Twinkle Like Gold.

Alex Nichols, one of the editors was live in the studio.

Rose-gold heels. The boys that bully. The doctor’s office. A changeling. A name the boss won’t let you forget. A fingernail secretly painted with clear polish. The euphoric buzz of the razor…

From stories of struggle, change and transformation to alien tea parties and glittering she-gods, We Twinkle Like Gold is the collective expression of 16 trans and gender-diverse folk who met on Zoom in 2021 to write together. Written in Melbourne and throughout Australia, their explorations traverse fiction, autobiography, fantasy, poetry, illustration, songwriting, interview and collective storytelling.

‘We are gaining visibility; our rights are starting to gain recognition. We are starting to learn to be proud of who we are. This collection offers an opportunity to walk in our shoes… to be led to an understanding of the diversity of the human experience and different ways to be. (Sarah, author-participant)

We Twinkle Like Gold is the first project from A Thousand Threads: Stories of Us, an ongoing writing initiative creating spaces for trans and gender-diverse peer connection and collaboration.

This week  on Spoken Word we took a deep dive into Queer and Trans history, from the ancient world all the to the present with writer and tiktok star, Hannah McElhinney; as we discussed her writing, her book and her tiktok show.

Hannah McElhinney (she/her) is the writer and creator of Rainbow History Class, a space for sharing the queer and trans history we so rarely have the opportunity to learn. Their stories aim to inspire, educate, bring gratitude, build bridges, make you laugh, make you mad and maybe even help you win an argument.

Rainbow History Classis your entry into LGBTQ+ history, sharing queer and trans stories from Ancient civilisations all the way up to the internet.

So much of queer and trans history and culture has been erased, but Hannah McElhinney, writer and creator of Rainbow History Class (as seen on TikTok), is here to help us all with this crash course. This history lesson isn’t dry and academic, nor is it glitter-soaked and reductive. It’s a comprehensive and entertaining romp through queer and trans history, full of secret queer codes, gender-bending icons, pop-culture knowledge and incredible activists.

More than anything, Rainbow History Class will make you feel connected to the stories of our rich and vibrant community. This knowledge will help spark conversations between your friends and family and be a source of comfort as you stand up for yourself and your community. This illustrated hardback book is a celebration for all LGBTQ+ people, and an invitation to the newly out that says, ‘Welcome to the club, let’s get you caught up!’

Topics covered: Queerness in the ancient world. Queerness in the military and so much more.
