Ship container Exh, Proj Hysteria, Women of Soul & Hares & Hyenas

Arts, Music, Performing Arts, TV & Film, Visual Arts

Last week for Daniel for a bit. He’s got exams!! Brendan will be back on air next week after his fab Euro holiday!

Daniel and David talk about —Ridley Scott’s new film– The Martian starring Matt Damon and a strong supporting cast. Daniel thinks it’s a solid film for buffs who like science-talk and Scott’s other films. They then discuss the discrepancy between female & male actors’ pay.

Special guests today are:

For the first time on the show–Alison Lasek is Public Programs Coordinator at ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art) at 111 Sturt Street Southbank and has come in to talk about the ACCA Start-Up Shipping Container Exhibition. This exhibition is in the forecourt near Grant St inside a shipping container and is part of ACCA’s Start-Up Programs helping young artists put together an exhibition. It’s on from 13th October to 14th November— with exhibits changing on a weekly basis. On Tuesday nights they have an ‘opening party’ for each artist. Alison also talks about what ACCA does, their amazing building, other exhibitions, volunteers, how artists are chosen for exhibitions and a network for artists.

Creative Producer and actress Fleur Murphy and Assistant Director Ben Adams from TBC Theatre talk about their production Project Hysteria the overall title for a presentation of 2 Tennessee Williams (TW) one-act plays, ‘The Pretty Trap’ and ‘Interior- Panic’. It’s part of Poppyseed Festival which is a new independent theatre festival. The festival offers venues, financial support & a network of artists. Project Hysteria is playing at Trades Hall from 10th to 22nd November. Tickets via Poppyseed website. Both Fleur and Ben are writers as well as having acting and theatre backgrounds respectively. Both are big fans of TW and his writing and did a lot of research on him, considering the one act plays to be precursors to his more famous plays– A Streetcar named Desire and The Glass Menagerie.

Chelsea Wilson & Rita Satch are two of the singers from Women Of Soul telling us about their show at the Northcote town Hall on 31st October. (Part of the Darebin Music Feast). Women of Soul (WOS) is a collective of Melbourne soul vocalists and songwriters which has been going for 5 years. In each show, they showcase different vocalists and here, there are 7 of them, each doing a couple of songs. Rita released an EP a while ago and is working on her first album. She recently won an International songwriting competition. Both she and Chelsea played at Glastonbury festival! Chelsea is also a broadcaster on PBS, DJs, and curates the WOS series. Last year she put out her debut album. They both love expressing themselves from the heart in their music.

Crusader Hillis from Hares and Hyenas is well known in Melbourne in the LGBTI community. He worked for Melbourne Arts Festival for 19 years & is still heavily involved in the arts but with an alternative bent. Since he and partner Rowland Thomson started up the Hares and Hyenas ( LGBTI specialist bookshop) in South Yarra almost 24 years ago, they have presented nearly 1000 events. They had the SY and a Fitzroy shop for a while but implementation of the GST made that impossible. Now they have a larger shop in Fitzroy alone which is big enough to have a more diverse sexuality bookshop, a venue, community space, bar/café and disabled accessibility. 2-3 times a week they have groups coming in—mental health, disability, youth & schools—and also have events, bookclubs, panels & discussion and speakers from all over the world. They’re encouraging a live space connection as opposed to that often false sense of community thru social media.
