Michelle Buxton talks to David about a new event in St Kilda called Map 57: St Kilda’s Winter Garden on from 15 June to 30 July at St Kilda Triangle, St Kilda.

Michelle and her husband Andrew Walker have a company which is  behind such events as the Garden Of Unearthly Delights at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, and is also responsible  for introducing the Speigeltent to Adelaide and then to Melbourne. Michelle discusses these things and more with David. Map 57… is a new event that Michelle and Andrew are producing in St Kilda.  Michelle really wanted to do an event in St Kilda because she lives there. Also, for those too young to remember beyond the GPS system, Michelle explains that the map reference is the page in the Melways Street Directory that refers to most of St Kilda!!

She explains the event as part seaside carnival, part performing arts festival (including theatre, cabaret, music ,comedy and family shows). The Aurora Spiegeltent is already up and a big Ferris wheel is being erected called The Sky Wheel. Apart from the tent, the other performing venue is The Box which is beautifully designed and acoustically excellent. There are also small bars, food stalls, some rides AND an ice-skating rink!

Michelle details some of the shows on including Blanc De Blanc, Vika & Linda, Fiona O’Loughlin, Djuki Mala and a number of others including children’s shows (which kick in in July when school holidays begin).

Director of Physical Theatre & Circus Kate Fryer and performer Ella Bartoloma are here to talk about their show from the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) called Circosis: Left Brain, Right Brain on from 15 to 24 June at NICA in 55 Green St, Prahran.

Kate talks about NICA itself, her own background, & her method of directing/teaching/guiding the students who, in 3rd year, each put on their own final performance. She also describes the concepts behind the title, that linked the performances of 23 individual performances. These performances were not easy to link as they are extremely varied; ranging from being quite political to fun and outrageous.

Ella is one of the student performers and is in the Left Brain show.  This performance is part of her assessment. She is doing an aerial rope act and has decided to take a political stance about real fur use in fashion. The performance starts off quite nicely and then becomes bloody, gross and confronting! Both Kate and Ella later outline what’s next for them.

Artistic Director Rob Tannion and performer Jarred Dewey are from Circus Oz and are here to talk about their new show Model Citizens on from 22 June to 16 July under the heated BIG TOP in Birrarung Marr. Melbourne is actually the last stop in the 4 month tour all over Australia.

Rob has a background in dance and physical theatre with most of his experience overseas.  He returned to Australia only a year ago to take on his present Artistic Director role. He gives some interesting details about Circus Oz including that it’s Melbourne-based, is 39 years old, and is never afraid to make a political statement.

Jarred graduated from NICA in 2010 and soon got a job with Circa who he travelled extensively with for 6 years, getting invaluable experience.  He joined circus Oz earlier this year.

For Rob, Model Citizens is a reflection about who we are as citizens these days in Australia; especially in this era of ‘me-isms’. It looks at the conflict between individualism/standing out and conformity. There is a loose narrative of one outsider arriving somewhere and how they fit in. This is Rob’s first show as Artistic Director and it is very visual with a spectacular set & costumes, 4 musicians and about 10 multi-talented circus artists and acrobats. Jarred is doing contortion on trapeze as well as some ensemble work such as ‘catching bodies’. Rob talks more about the show, the changing culture of Circus Oz and his way of working.
