The inaugural MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission, opening on 6 October, will unveil a large-scale installation by world-leading Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao exploring the concept of clothing as a symbol of protection, and the associated practices of domestic labour, gender and community.

The MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission is a major five-year series that, each year, invites an international female designer or architect to create new and significant work for the NGV Collection.

The first and only initiative of its kind in Australia, the Commission will create an annual platform for the presentation of topical, world-premiere works that amplify the contribution of female designers and architects in shaping our world.

Titled La ropa sucia se lava en casa (Dirty clothes are washed at home), 2022, the installation draws on the notion of clothing as a symbol of protection for the body and the associated labour of caring for garments as an act of self-care.

Central to the installation is a basin-like structure inspired by the Lavadero of Huichapan, a historical communal laundry located in the town of Huichapan, Hildalgo in Mexico. The construction of the lavadero dates back to the 18th century and was built for the local community to access the natural spring water. The communal structure represents a bygone practice of laundering clothing in public spaces and the social bonds formed among communities through this act.

Symbolising the age-old and cross-cultural practice of washing clothes, the installation is draped with large patchwork quilts, each comprising textiles and clothing donated and sewn together by people in Berlin and Mexico City, who participated in workshops delivered by Tatiana Bilbao Estudio in the making of the work

Wall drawings depict communal laundries and washhouses from around the world and throughout history, creating a collective memory of the diverse social interactions that laundry spaces have enabled in societies, where the associated labour often goes unrecognised.

The commission is a physical expression of Bilbao’s aim to free architecture from the conventions of the 20th century and to propose a new trajectory that is focused on community, sustainability and ethics.

Regarded as one of Mexico’s leading architects working today, Bilbao founded Tatiana Bilbao Estudio in Mexico City in 2004 with the aim of conducting architectural design work from a position of social and ecological responsibility. Her work is known for challenging historical conventions, often rearticulating spaces so that they are more people-orientated and inclusive.

Tatiana Bilbao said: ‘I am deeply honoured and grateful to have been chosen for the Women in Design Commission by the NGV and MECCA. The Commission is contributing, in many ways, to advance the discourse of the importance of opening channels for people who have been left out of opportunities.’

Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV, said: ‘The ongoing Women in Design Commission will highlight the ground-breaking work of women in this field from Australia and around the world, as well as strengthening the NGV Collection for future generations. We are grateful to MECCA for their visionary support of this Australian-first initiative and commend their continued mission to elevate and empower women in the creative industries.

‘Tatiana Bilbao’s is a compelling voice from outside of the traditional canon of architecture, offering a unique perspective on both its history and its future. A woman from North America, an advocate, and a spokesperson for change, Bilbao creates work that is as intellectually rigorous as it is visually dynamic,’ said Ellwood.

The MECCA x NGV Women in Design commission series is enabled by a significant contribution from MECCA Brands through its social change program, M-POWER, which champions equality and opportunity for women and girls. This is MECCA’s single largest commitment to an Australian cultural institution and exponentially expands the NGV’s longstanding partnership with the brand.

Finally, after two long yearsof lockdown Robert Earp and Venus Tomarz will launch Venus Virgin Tomarz.

Two brilliant minds come together for the Venus Virgin Tomarz photographic exhibition showing this
May in Melbourne’s, CBD. Combining the electrifying conceptual photography of Robert
Earp and the ‘surreal realness’ of Venus Virgin Tomarz. This is an exhibition that goes
beyond gender to a meeting of minds and worlds. The exhibition is named after Earp’s
‘divalicious’ collaborator and muse whilst the work explores the journey of gender and
transition between worlds.
The true story of Venus Virgin Tomarz is told in hyper-colourful composite photographs
that recall the sci-fi kitsch of yesteryear. “Venus’s idea of taking 1960s sci-fi as the metaphor
of her story of transgender, I just thought that was brilliant,” said Robert Earp, Photomaker.
“I’ve always loved the magician’s trick where you’re at a magic show and there is a woman
floating […] you know in your head there are strings attached but you still feel as though she
is really floating. In this work I have conceptualised Venus as my floating muse”.
In Earp’s images, entire galaxies and epic encounters have been created in minute detail,
using everyday household items as the building blocks; the stars are bicarbonate soda;

chalk dust becomes star dust; the moon a swirl of poured beer while a Kitchenaid blender
whips up tornadoes and alien flesh is created from fish in Earp’s own tank.
Earp came to acclaim early on in his career with an exhibition at the National Gallery of
Victoria with only his third roll of film. Fast forward and he was quickly embraced by the
commercial and fashion world making his name as a ‘maker’ of photographs, turning
concepts into art.
For Venus this was a meeting of minds “This art extravaganza is an astounding collaboration
between myself and Photomaker, Robert Earp” said Venus “who believed in the idea and
these important art dimensions for the globe. I have pure respect for the understanding, the
beauty and passion for detail of this production team of professionals.”
In this exhibition, nothing is as it appears and the piece poses profound questions around
perception, ideology, society and the future. Where are we going and how are we getting
there? Will we be able to accept each other in whatever guise we appear?
“Behind it all, the narrative is about equality, really,” says Earp. “It’s also about that fight between
Venus and Mars in the classic sense from literature – you know, men are from Mars and women
are from Venus. That fight is in everybody.”

Let’s dance and get the good vibes flowing

L2R Dance presents Block Party uniting Melbourne’s electric hip-hop culture on Saturday, 12 March 2022.
Block Party will showcase a range of roaring local dance crews across street and social dance styles, including Breakin’, Vogue, House, Hip Hop, Dance Hall, Popping and Locking.
On grassy green lawns of Footscray Community Arts, friends and families can enjoy a BBQ lunch (even with vegan sausages) or order up at the food trucks while being entertained by the hip hop jams and battles as well as DJs and live-music featuring POOKIE, Bilalli and Urlik.
Jacinda Richards, L2R Dance founder, CEO and Artistic Director, welcomes everyone to Block Party, “Dance is an empowering exchange – it breaks down social barriers, embraces meaningful connections and brings us all together.”
“We want to show how dance plays an important role in the lives of our young dancers including our current Igniting Legends who are passionate leaders committed within their cultural communities,” said Richards.
Over the past year, L2R Dance offered a 12-month paid internship to build the artistic skills and career pathways for three emerging artists as part of the Igniting Legends program, including Yolande Arinda, Urlik Mageza and Stephanie Dixon.
Efren Pamilacan, L2R Dance’s Youth Arts Coordinator, facilitates the Igniting Legends program and says “Our emerging artists have partnered with mentors across Australia and attended festivals such as Yirramboi, NGV Triennial and City Sessions.”
Yolande Arinda is 19 years old, was born in Uganda and moved to Australia in 2015. Following the Igniting Legends program, she will work at L2R Dance as artist liaison for street dance events while completing her Bachelor of Arts at Deakin University.
Urlik Mageza is 19 years old and an actor, model, dancer and singer from Uganda. At Block Party he will perform some of his songs from his first music EP, which will be released later this year.
Stephanie Dixon is 19 years old and Australian born with Thai heritage. She is the first L2R Dance emerging artist to pursue dance in higher education and is currently studying at the University of Melbourne under a VCA scholarship.
Responding to young people’s ideas, needs and concerns, L2R Dance facilitates commercial opportunities for emerging artists and also offers a range of free weekly hip hop dance workshops for young people in Melbourne’s West and beyond.

Weave It! is a free, 17-day interactive and evolving exhibition, multi-sensory installation and workshop series for children and their grown-ups, held at The Store, at Abbotsford Convent. For Weave It! Abbotsford Convent has commissioned a creative collaboration between multidisciplinary textile artists Lisa Waup (Gunditjmara and Torres Strait Islander) and John Brooks.
Throughout the month of January, children are invited to collaborate with the artists and each other, immersing themselves in the engaging practices of textiles and weaving, resulting in a “takeover” as the work grows into a wonderland of colourful, bright, fun fabrics and textures throughout the space. DIY videos can be seen here.

The exhibition will be supported by artist facilitation (including drop-in, hands-on workshops and come-and-go activities) enabling children and families to learn hands-on craft practices grounded in First Nations explorations of interconnectivity, storytelling, and sustainability. While incorporating natural and found materials such as sticks or recycled materials to build into the work, participants can spark discussions about recycling materials, retelling the stories of our cultures and celebrating community.

Artists Lisa and John are passionate about everyone’s right to access great contemporary arts experiences. “Children are often framed as passive receivers of art that was made without them in mind, and we want to turn this around. We believe that children should have an active engagement in arts and their community, and this exhibition will help facilitate this,” says Lisa.

“Weaving works well with children because it follows a simple, repetitive formula that can produce small or large outcomes, using a variety of objects and materials,” John explains. “I hope that the children will take away the ability to look at everyday objects as potential materials, and learn to make string out of anything… which will hopefully lead to a wide range of children growing up with the ability to transform textile waste into functional textile materials. The fashion industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters, so I hope that the kids will become more resourceful and use the ideas in these workshops to slow down their own consumption as they grow up.”

Lisa Waup is a Gunditjmara and Torres Strait Islander and Italian woman born in Naarm (Melbourne). A multidisciplinary artist and curator, she works across weaving, printmaking, photography, sculpture, textiles, jewellery and installation. Waup’s studio-based practice illustrates and symbolises her life’s journey through discovery and connection. Her work highlights the importance of tracing lost history, ancestral relationships, Country, motherhood and time through woven stories of her past, present and future into contemporary forms. Currently Waup is undertaking a Master of Contemporary Art Degree at the VCA at Melbourne University. She has exhibited at multiple galleries across Australia along with ReDot Gallery in Singapore and been acquired by many national and international collections, including the NGV.

John Brooks is a Melbourne-based multimedia artist, whose practice reflects the interconnected, anthropomorphic qualities and relationships between objects and humans. Originally trained as a textile designer, Brooks now works predominantly with hand-weaving techniques combined with various mediums such as video, performance, sculpture and installation. He has exhibited extensively in Melbourne, interstate and internationally over the past ten years.

John explains, “I’ve wanted to work with Lisa for a while because of her sensitivity with materials and the graphic yet organic quality of her print work and drawings, as well as her approach to found materials… there’s always been intuitive feeling that we’d make amazing work together, which I think is so important when working with another artist.”

Based just outside Melbourne CBD, Abbotsford Convent is a National Heritage Listed site and Australia’s largest arts and cultural precinct—a place of art, culture, collaboration and learning. Convent Kids is an exciting program developed by Abbotsford Convent in collaboration with leading artists, offering a range of fun hands-on activities that inspire children and their families to experiment, learn and make art together. Convent Kids is supported by City of Yarra and Weave It! is supported by Creative Victoria.
