On this episode of The I in Us, Paul and Cody were joined by Italian endosex researcher Dr Marta Prandelli. Marta has a PhD in Social Sciences, is a postdoctoral fellow and part-time lecturer at Dublin City University.  Plus, she is a prolific author of research and commentary on the intersex community. Further, she organised a global conference showcasing intersex studies in Dublin, Ireland in 2025.   Marta said of the conference, “The result was far more than a conference. It became a space of depth, scholarship, safety, creativity, and connection”.

Also on this episode,  Marta explains what led her to develop an interest in the intersex community, projects she has undertaken since, what continues to drive her to participate in this valuable work, and lastly, what “makes Marta human” … i.e., what occupies her time when she’s not engaged in research.

On this episode of The I in Us, Paul and Cody welcomed intersex Canadian Robin Link to the JOY airwaves.

Robin (they/them/theirs) is an intersex, bigender fluid, poly and pan middle-being, living with super-senses of synesthesia. Robin learned they are intersex just five years ago, but has known about their differences since the age of four. In 2022, Robin recognised the need for intersex-specific support in their region and so founded Orchids, an intersex-focused division of a Canadian organisation that mainly supports Transgender and gender-diverse persons.

On this episode we hear about Robin’s early years, attempts by others to change who they are and how they appear, and how Robin’s Indigenous heritage and lived experience intertwine to enable Robin to navigate their experience of being intersex, and to become completely comfortable in their own skin, and body.

We also find out what makes Robin Human!!

On this episode of The I in Us Cody and Paul welcomed Pidgeon Pagonis to the show.  Pidgeon is an internationally renowned, Chicago-based intersex activist, artist, and media disruptor.

Pidgeon co-founded the Intersex Justice Project.  Also, they are a face of National Geographic’s Gender Revolution.  Pidgeon brought intersex issues to global audiences through writing, film, and art. Their memoir “Nobody Needs to Know” and short films “A Normal Girl “and “The Son I Never Had” uplift intersex voices and push against erasure.

Pidgeon’s work exposes the ongoing harms done to intersex children in the name of “normalcy.”  Further, they insist on a broader truth: intersex bodies have always existed and always belonged.  Although the work is not finished,  intersex activists, artists, and organizers have made justice impossible to ignore. Overall, the message is clear: fix your hearts, not our parts.  Important:  should any part of this episode be disturbing in any way, please contact https://www.joy.org.au/support

This conversation will enthrall, challenge and, inspire you as Paul, Cody and Pidgeon delve into some tough but important topics, and later, on a lighter note, find out what makes Pidgeon human.

Claude was raised as a female until his male characteristics emerged.  This lead to oppression, humiliation, physical attacks, accusations of witchcraft and social ostracization that impacted much of his life.  However, Claude didn’t let these terrible experiences hold him back.  In fact, these negative experiences made him more determined to create something truly positive.  He has become a father, a passionate intersex advocate, and in 2012, founded Intersex Cameroon.  So, Claude, through his hard work and determination, has become some-one to be really admired.

You can catch that podcast here – The I in Us: Jelly O’Shea and AJ Dea | The I in Us

On this episode, Paul and Cody flip the tables by asking AJ and Jelly not about their advocacy, but “what makes them human” (a new segment usually assigned to the end of interviews), and in doing so, we hear about their other interests and at times quirky passions, including New Zealand’s unique natural history, and their personal art.

Since 2025, Tash has been a proud half of the Intersex Peer Support state representatives in Western Australia. Residing in Whadjuk Noongar country, Tash is the culmination of too many fantasy/science fiction books, unmoderated internet access and the crushing realisation that they could not, in fact, be a starving artist.

Tash believes in living in a way that makes sense to you, brings joy and in finding your people. The world is dreary without them.

On this episode of The I in Us, Paul and Cody welcomed Intersex Peer Support Australia Peer Support Coordinator Kylie Bond to the show for the very first time.

Kylie’s journey of self‑discovery began in 1996 when she learned she was intersex. That pivotal moment led her to attend the first peer‑led Intersex Support Group at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.  This was her very first step in her healing journey. It was there, among others like her, that she found a profound sense of belonging and the transformative power of shared experience. In addition, she met friends who became lifetime friends.

In her new role at Intersex Peer Support Australia, Kylie is committed to extending that healing to others, and amplifying the stories of intersex individuals to foster understanding, build community connection and strength, and empower acceptance and resilience.

Paul and Cody also welcomed back Executive Director of InterAction for Health and Human Rights, Morgan Carpenter for the second iteration of the show’s new segment, “now in intersex news, with Morgan Carpenter”.

On this episode Paul and Cody welcome intersex ally Grant Martinson to the show. Heralding from the West Canadian province of Saskatchewan, Grant has been on a lifelong path of exploration—of body, energy, gender, and sexuality. During this journey Grant met someone who was intersex. Their conversations stirred something within him and while he’s never sought to find out if he too is intersex, the conversations did make him wonder, what if, through shame or fear or survival, he too was intersex but had held it all down?

Whether Grant is intersex or not, his story gives rise to questions we can all ask. Beyond the physical, in what other ways do our sex characteristic manifest in our life, and how do they shape our life path, sense of self and understanding of who we are, and why we exist.

Also, to commence the show, Executive Director of InterAction for Health Human Rights, Morgan Carpenter launched a new periodical segment of The I in Us – “In Intersex News” – when Morgan will offer updates on local and international events and achievements in intersex advocacy.

On this week’s show, Paul welcomed Delsi Moleta (aka Delsi Cat) to the JOY Studios.

Delsi (they/she) is a proud queer person, qualified teacher, producer, business owner, and TEDx speaker. Over the past 11 years, Delsi has contributed extensively to the LGBTQIA+ sector, working with organisations such as Minus18, Switchboard Victoria, Transgender Victoria, JOY 94.9, and Rainbow Network.

Delsi is also the founder of Unicorns, a grassroots LGBTQIA+ organisation they established 11 years ago to create safe, inclusive spaces for the entire LGBTQIA+ community. Their work with Unicorns has received recognition when being named a finalist for the Victorian LGBTI Person of the Year Award in both 2019 and 2023 and earning a spot on Google’s Top 50 Australian LGBTI Leaders List.

Lastly, Delsi is a current joint Project Manager on the Being Valued Project. Supported by WorkSafe Victoria’s Work-Well-Respect Fund, this project sees Transgender Victoria and Your Community Health partnering to co-design resources to help employers prevent gendered violence in the workplace. Centring community voices throughout their development, including intersex voices, these resources will improve the capacity of workplaces, specifically leaders, to create safe, inclusive, and gender affirming workplace cultures for Trans, Gender Diverse, Non-Binary, and other LGBTIQA+ workers.

Carolyn Hannaford https://joy.org.au/theiinus/2024/11/26/carolyn-hannaford/ Tue, 26 Nov 2024 10:36:47 +0000 https://joy.org.au/theiinus/?p=332 The I in Us is an Australian-based radio show about the intersex community, by the intersex community, for everyone.

On this week’s show, Paul welcomed Carolyn (CJ) Hannaford, an intersex woman from South Australia to the JOY 94.9 airwaves.

Born in 1952, CJ grew up in an era of secrecy, shame and ignorance about her Intersex variation. CJ says that she may as well have been a dinosaur for the oddity she perceived herself to be, and it wasn’t until the age of 19 years that CJ finally learned she is intersex, in a most unexpected and confronting way.

CJ has been an intersex advocate in Australia for many years, including being the South Australian, Western Australian and Northern Territory Peer Support Rep for Intersex Peer Support Australia.

On Wednesday 13 November 2024 CJ delivered the South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance (SARAA) Ian Purcell Oration at the Adelaide Feast Festival, South Australia’s Annual Arts and Cultural Festival – with a talk titled, “Were There Intersex Dinosaurs?”

Please join us as we unpack CJ’s oration and her intersex story.

On this week’s show, Paul welcomed Jason La Barre to the JOY 94.9 airwaves.

Born and raised in Illinois, USA, Jason was born with an innate variation in sex characteristics, but like so many intersex people, Jason endured the consequences of this since long before he knew why his life had been so challenging and why he had felt different to his peers since the age of four.

As the years passed Jason defied the opinion of his teachers and peers to complete high school and university degrees, and like so many people within the intersex community, became an advocate for his community, passionate that no other kids or teens would go through what he did, physically, cognitively, or socially.

On this week’s show, Paul welcomed Kajsa Wenman to the JOY 94.9 airwaves.

Originally hailing from the USA, Kajsa (she/her) was subjected to adverse childhood events that led to severe mental health issues. For the past 10 years, Kajsa has made use of various complementary medicine techniques to heal the root cause of her mental health issues, and in 2019 started a business to help others with similar problems.

Academically Kajsa earned an MA in Viking and Early Medieval Studies at Uppsala University in 2005 after completing her dissertation titled, “Intersex Conditions in the Viking Age: the written and genetic evidence.” It was then that Kajsa fell in love with Stockholm, started visiting annually and nowadays, calls Sweden home.

Having learned from a genetic test they are intersex just seven years ago, Kajsa soon became a member of the Intersex Sverige (Sweden) and is now the Secretary.

Kajsa is also an intersex creator, designing badges, t-shirts and intersex pride-themed fibre arts and jewellery.

Tracy Postert and Lucie Corden https://joy.org.au/theiinus/2024/10/31/tracy-postert-and-lucie-corden/ Thu, 31 Oct 2024 01:43:41 +0000 https://joy.org.au/theiinus/?p=312 The I in Us is an Australian-based radio show about the intersex community, by the intersex community, for everyone.

On this week’s show, Paul welcomed intersex artists Houston (USA) based Tracy Postert and UK-based Lucie Corden.

Tracy Postert’s parents learned she is intersex when she was 5 years old and has been on estrogen since age 12. She didn’t learn she is intersex until age 50. Tracy became a social activist, gained a Bachelor’s degree, a PhD in bio-medicine, a Masters in Science Education, and a post-graduate fellowship -all leading to her working as a teacher and college instructor. At age 25 Tracy visited the faculty library and figured out she might have the innate variation in sex characteristics, Androgen Insensitivity.

Spending all these years in the science, medical and educational space didn’t bring Tracy closer to having this confirmed. Finally, at the age of 50, all would be revealed! At age 54, Tracy received “intersex services” from a medical doctor for the very first time. As a long-time activist this passion sees Tracy speaking up for intersex rights and using her visual art as a vehicle to spread the word about our community. This is both figuratively and practically after her van was stolen, Tracy repainted the van rainbow with a generous covering of intersex flags.

Lucie Corden is a feminine intersex woman. Her parents learned she was born with an innate variation in sex characteristics when she was 5 months old. She endured operations from as young as 12 and has been on hormone replacement therapy all her life. But like Tracy, being intersex doesn’t define Lucie. She loves life, is married to a wonderful man with a similar intersex variation. Lucie has worked as a makeup artist, visual artist, barista, and an active and passionate advocate for intersex rights.

Intersex Awareness Day 2024 https://joy.org.au/theiinus/2024/10/29/intersex-awareness-day-2024/ Tue, 29 Oct 2024 00:03:47 +0000 https://joy.org.au/theiinus/?p=308 Happy Intersex Awareness Day 2024!

The I in Us is an Australian-based radio show about the intersex community, by the intersex community, for everyone.

On this week’s show, Paul and guest co-host Cody Smith celebrated International Intersex Awareness Day being held on Saturday Oct 26. They welcomed intersex veterinarian Dr Channy McGowan and Aotearoa/New Zealand intersex advocate Georgia Andrews.

Paul, Cody and their guests talked about the history of International Intersex Awareness Day, why the day is important to the intersex community and shared updates about the status of work to achieve legislative protections for intersex people living in Victoria and elsewhere in Australia.

Georgia, who works closely with Stephanie Lum as the Stakeholder Manager at YOUth&I, an Australian-based intersex youth publication, gave us a sneak peek into the soon to be released fourth edition. She read poetry submitted by intersex youth from across the globe. Profoundly personal, the poetry evoked much emotion, bringing Paul and his guests to tears – so before you listen, grab some tissues.

Paul was thrilled to premiere “Avarice”, the newest song by Melbourne-based independent intersex musician Nyx, from Nyx and the Nightmakers.

Aces Fox https://joy.org.au/theiinus/2024/10/24/the-i-in-us-aces-fox/ Thu, 24 Oct 2024 03:46:49 +0000 https://joy.org.au/theiinus/?p=298 The I in Us this week brings to the JOY airwaves another incredible, truly moving episode.   The exceptional host, Paul, and amazing guest co-host, Cody Smith, interview Aces Fox, this week’s fabulous special guest.  Aces joins the program from across the miles in Seattle, Washington, USA.  Now, tune into JOY 94.9 and enjoy this intriguing and highly educational episode.

At the age of nineteen years, Aces was confirmed intersex; having both XY and XO sex chromosomes.  Therefore, Aces is a true hermaphrodite and a chimera.  This means that two people become one person, very shortly after conception.  Even more exciting on The I in Us this week, we learn that our special guest, Aces, enjoyed a full term pregnancy.  Aces delivered a child, fathered by another human with XY sex chromosomes, naturally into this world.   Aces is thus a biological parent.

Aces further chats to The I in Us about a couple more amazing triumphs.  Four years ago, Aces created and produced America’s first ever K-pop radio show, hosted by Aces’ own non-binary child, Dakota.  To learn more about K-pop, visit https://en.wikipedia.org  At this time, no K-Pop was played in America.  It was also a very challenging time because the world was in the middle of a pandemic. (COVID 19)  Another breathtaking attribute is that Aces has also practiced as an Oracle.  To learn more about the work an Oracle carries out, visit https://www.merriam-webster.com  Visit also https://www.dictionary.cambridge.org

This is another fascinating, heart-warming and personal story It is the powerful personal story about a wonderful human:  Aces Fox’s life journey.  So, tune into this truly sensational episode of The I in Us, learn and enjoy.

Anita Deutsch https://joy.org.au/theiinus/2024/10/23/the-i-in-us-anita-deutsch/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 00:06:37 +0000 https://joy.org.au/theiinus/?p=290 The I in Us this week welcomes as special guest, Tasmanian-born Anita Deutsch from Melbourne, to the JOY airwaves.  Anita is raising not one, but three gorgeous boys; all of whom have XXY sex chromosomes.  The condition is also known as Klinefelter’s Syndrome.  Also, Paul’s very special guest co-host on the program is the fabulous Simone-Lisa Anderson from Tasmania.  So join in another exciting and educational hour with phenomenal host, Paul, as he brings to the airwaves another  enthralling episode.

Klinefelter’s Syndrome(XXY Syndrome/47XXY)

Klinefelter’s Syndrome, also known as XXY or 47XXY Syndrome, occurs as a result of a random generic error after conception.  It is a genetic condition in which a male is born with an extra copy of the X chromosone.  Thereby, males born with Klinefelter’s may have low testosterone levels, reduced muscle mass, facial and body hair.  (For more information regarding this condition, visit:  https://www. en.wikipedia.org/klinefelter’s syndrome, https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/klinefelter’s syndrome, https://www.mayoclinic.com/klinefelter’s syndrome.)   Hear more about this condition, rarely found in three children born to the same parents.

Anita Deutsch

On this episode of The I in Us, Anita Deutsch  shares how her eldest boy, plus her twin boys, all have Klinefelter’s Syndrome.  Although Klinefelter’s Syndrome occurs in one in five hundred male children, Anita explains that it is very rare to have three children with the same intersex variation.  She thus shares a wealth of information and knowledge, based on her personal experience of raising three children with variations of sex characteristics.  (Should any part of this program be found to be triggering, please visit for support, https://www.joy.org.au/support).

Also discussed on The I in Us  this week is an apparent need for Klinefelter’s(XXY/47XXY) children to have access to the NDIS.  Such access would prove hugely beneficial in dealing with cognitive and developmental challenges.  Access to speech, occupational and physio therapy, would be hugely beneficial to address developmental delays present from birth.  Plus, these services would also assist Klinefelter’s children with challenges experienced going through school.

Paul highlights next week’s episode of The I in Us with special guest Anastasia Fox.  So, don’t forget to tune into The I in Us next Wednesday for another most interesting conversation.   To find out more about overall intersex support, visit https://www.isupport.org.au.  For resources, visit https://www.ihra.org.au.  For X and Y Spectrum support, visit https://www.access.org.au.
