Klinefelter’s Syndrome(XXY Syndrome/47XXY)

Klinefelter’s Syndrome, also known as XXY or 47XXY Syndrome, occurs as a result of a random generic error after conception.  It is a genetic condition in which a male is born with an extra copy of the X chromosone.  Thereby, males born with Klinefelter’s may have low testosterone levels, reduced muscle mass, facial and body hair.  (For more information regarding this condition, visit:  https://www. en.wikipedia.org/klinefelter’s syndrome, https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/klinefelter’s syndrome, https://www.mayoclinic.com/klinefelter’s syndrome.)   Hear more about this condition, rarely found in three children born to the same parents.

Anita Deutsch

On this episode of The I in Us, Anita Deutsch  shares how her eldest boy, plus her twin boys, all have Klinefelter’s Syndrome.  Although Klinefelter’s Syndrome occurs in one in five hundred male children, Anita explains that it is very rare to have three children with the same intersex variation.  She thus shares a wealth of information and knowledge, based on her personal experience of raising three children with variations of sex characteristics.  (Should any part of this program be found to be triggering, please visit for support, https://www.joy.org.au/support).

Also discussed on The I in Us  this week is an apparent need for Klinefelter’s(XXY/47XXY) children to have access to the NDIS.  Such access would prove hugely beneficial in dealing with cognitive and developmental challenges.  Access to speech, occupational and physio therapy, would be hugely beneficial to address developmental delays present from birth.  Plus, these services would also assist Klinefelter’s children with challenges experienced going through school.

Paul highlights next week’s episode of The I in Us with special guest Anastasia Fox.  So, don’t forget to tune into The I in Us next Wednesday for another most interesting conversation.   To find out more about overall intersex support, visit https://www.isupport.org.au.  For resources, visit https://www.ihra.org.au.  For X and Y Spectrum support, visit https://www.access.org.au.

Ly Baumgardt

Ly Baumgardt tells The I in Us about his background and current undertakings. He identifies as a trans and intersex anti-Zionist Jewish activist.  Ly enjoys rollerskating, yelling through a bullhorn, and scaring himself with mediocre ghost stories.  He learned he is intersex at fifteen years of age.  Ly had already started doing queer activism at the young age of twelve. Further, by age fourteen he was working in not-for-profit capacities.

TIGERRS and MNTIRN

Plus, at age seventeen Ly co-founded TIGERRS where he is currently the Intersex co-ordinator.(https://www.tigerrs.org)  Later, Ly also founded MNTIRN (Minnesota Trans and Intersex Resource Network), and the Minnesota Trans Resource Directory.  He wrote the booklet:  I Think I May be Intersex.  This booklet is for folks questioning if they have an intersex variation.  It includes common intersex symptoms, tips on self-advocacy and information on testing options.(https://www.tigerrs.org/intersex-resources).  Ly explains the importance of TIGERRS to the hosts on The I in Us.  TIGERRS is a very comprehensive list of resources especially for trans folks , as well as others coming to Minnesota.  It is operated mainly by volunteers and funded by grants, donations and fundraising events.  MNTIRN is a group which collaborates between local LGBTIQA+ organizations and individuals who assist Trans and Intersex folks coming to Minnesota.(https://www.mntirnetwork.org).

Ly concludes his interview on The I in Us emphasizing that, in future,  intersex individuals will not have to explain themselves.  Intersex people will be understood and accepted.  He aims to continue introducing resources and getting material passed legislatively.  Overall, Ly intends that, with more resources educating parents and doctors about intersex variations, unnecessary surgeries will decrease.  Such an informative and educational episode you truly cannot afford to miss.

Esther’s Background

Esther Morris Leidolf tells The I in Us that she was once a carpenter.  She became a gender activist when she discovered others had MRKH Syndrome.  Additionally, Esther is an intersex advocate and writer; with a background in public health data management.  She is known internationally for the founding of the MRKH(Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser sydrome) organization. (https://www.mrkh.org).  Esther was also Board Secretary for the Intersex Society of North America.(https://www.isna.org)  and a renowned author.  She wrote “Not Uncommon, Just Unheard Of”  and “The Missing Vagina Monologue”.   Also, Esther is currently collaborating with a playwright who is writing a a screen play of “The Missing Vagina Monologue”.

Esther’s Current Activities

The MRKH is a resource for women with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome and their medical providers.  She networks with doctors and women with MRKH in the Boston area; and visits local colleges and universities to talk about her own experience.  She has been interviewed on Gender Talk Radio and presented at Transcending Boundaries and at the LGBTI Health Summit(Boulder 2002).  Currently, Esther is completing her degree in Society and Health at Simmons College and works at Fenway Research Institute in Boston.

Esther’s Viewpoint

Esther Morris Leidolf explains to The I in Us that we need to change the way we think about intersex.   That is, intersex needs to be thought about as intersex diversities -not intersex disorders.  We need to stop ‘medicalizing’ people’s bodies.  We need to stop people into ‘binary norms’.  Thus there is a need to explore everything that exists between the far polarized ends of male and female on the binary scale.

So, this episode of The I in Us is a truly educational and captivating episode you really don’t want to miss. (https://www.joy.org/theiinus)

Dr Megan De Franza(International guest)

Dr Megan De Franza joins The I in Us from Boston in Massachusetts, USA.  Megan is an activist, film-maker and author.  She is also a leading scholarly voice; critiquing traditionalist interpretations of the Bible.  Such interpretations have harmed women, LGBTIQA+ people, cis-gender and straight people.  Megan holds a Ph. Little Jason

JOY’s very own Little Jase, co-host of The I in Us, is far from ‘little’ when it comes to study.  They hold a Doctorate in Theology, focusing on Hermeneutics and Exegesis.  This area of study explores the interpretation and critical explanation of scripture.

In this episode of The I in Us, Paul and Jase explore the inclusion of intersex people within Biblical scripture.  Special guests, David and Megan, discuss the work they have undertaken to engage with the Intersex Community.  Both bring attention to, and address, oppressive commentaries that negatively impact the intersex community in religious and broader social settings.

The I in Us is the only intersex program in Australia. In under twelve months, the program has generally become a significant means of support.  In particular, this popular program is proving to be very helpful for those who are still trying to find support within the community.  For more information, visit       https://www.joy.org.au/theiinus

The first part of the episode is a reflection of previous episodes since the beginning of the show in February, 2024.  Many and varied inspiring special guests have shared their lived experiences, and suggested channels through which others are able to find support.  As such, in a very short time the show has successfully attracted a following both nationally and internationally.   Hear how  The I in Us has become so successful, and so important not only within the intersex community, but the wider community as a whole.

Parents of intersex youth, intersex individuals reaching out, authors, musicians, film-makers, advocates, peer support personnel, allies, and many others have tuned in to The I in Us.  Over thirty-five people have been interviewed in just twenty-five shows.  The program enjoyed even more success during Radiothon 2024.  The amazing hosts, Paul and Little Jase, raised over $15,000 for JOY, in a first ever Radiothon for this show.  Paul and Little Jase sincerely thank again those generous people and organizations who donated.

Please share The I in Us podcasts far and wide.  The more people we reach, the more people we can help.  The more lives we can change.  For support, visit https://www.joy.org.au/support

Isabelle James(Issy)

During this episode Paul and Little Jase welcomed to the studio another special guest, the delightful Issy James.  Issy comes from a health-care background, as well as having worked in the not-for-profit sector.  Having a background revolving around caring and support makes Issy the successful person she is today.  Issy is now CEO for JOY, and continues to be a very caring, kind person as well as an efficient, well organized and productive leader.

Issy believes that to have and continue to have an intersex voice in the media is crucial.  This voice can empower not only the intersex community, but the wider community as well.  The I in Us is a successful medium through which the intersex community can be empowered.  The show is able to advocate for people and de-stigmatize intersex.  The I in Us plays an important role in making society aware that intersex people are incredible; they are capable and professional  like everyone else.  They are not invisible.

So grab a coffee, relax and be inspired by another amazing episode of The I in Us.

There is so much to learn about the subject of intersex tonight.  Come, tune into another powerful, absorbing and educational episode of The I in Us.  Our fabulous hosts, Paul and Little Jase chat to Stephanie Vaughan, special guest on tonight’s program.

Born in Yorkshire United Kingdom in 1961, Stephanie became aware that she was different as a young child, especially about gender.  Instead of entering a male puberty, she developed as a female.  She was lied to both by her parents and medical professionals.

Stephanie emigrated to Western Australia in 2006.    While being treated for a thyroid issue in 2012, it was discovered she was producing an abnormally huge amount of oestrogen.  When she returned to the U.K to obtain her medical records,  she was handed records which had been highly censored.  When she returned to Australia, her GP referred her to a Gender Specialist who informed her that she is intersex/hermaphrodite.  Stephanie was born with both male and female genitalia and was surgically modified at birth.  Listen as she describes her lengthy, somewhat rocky, road to becoming her authentic self:  Stephanie Vaughan.  Hear about the complications she experienced along the way, including during her school years.  At what age did she find out the truth about her birth?

Find out what measures Stephanie took to become her authentic self and at what age.  In 2021 she published a book and entitled it  “HALF HIM HALF HER.”  Her book covers her difficult journey and raises awareness of intersex and transgender people.  She chats about her book during this  episode of The I in Us.  Her ongoing passion now is to raise awareness of the many challenges facing intersex and transgender people.

This truly intriguing episode is an absolute must.

Paul and Little Jase introduce Suzannah and Rik, Leo’s parents.   This compelling episode concentrates on Leo’s early years.  Paul and Little Jase speak with Suzannah and Rik about the events that led to consulting with various health professionals to finally learn that Leo has 47,XXY (Klinefelter syndrome.)  Klinefelter syndrome is a congenital condition, where males are born with one or more extra X chromosomes.  The condition may cause slow language and walking development, as well as learning and behavioural problems.   It is a condition that can easily be confused with Autism.  Klinefelter syndrome is diagnosed by means of blood tests:  called karyotype, which is a genetic test that looks at the chromosomes.  If there is more than one X chromosome, this means one has Klinefelter syndrome.  (For more information about Klinefelter syndrome visit https://www.healthdirect.com.au/klinefelter-syndrome)
Hear about Suzannah and Rik’s incredible journey before learning that Leo has Klinefelter syndrome.  How long was it before Leo could speak?  At what age was Leo when Suzannah and Rik were informed Leo has Klinefelter syndrome?  The answers, plus much, much more,  are all within this captivating episode.
Truly this is such an inspiring, not to be missed program.

LEARN MORE Such an enthralling The I in Us on this Valentines Day episode.  Paul and Little Jase chat with special Guests Channy and Dougie Mc Gowan on the topic of intersex.  An honestly intriguing program when the discussion covers not only the human world, but also touches on the animal kingdom.
Intersex is when individuals are born with a range of variations in sex characteristics.  The term intersex is used as an umbrella term covering about forty different sex variations; every one of them having a medical terminology.  Understandably, the term intersex would be much less dehumanizing than some of the medical labels.  Being able to use the term intersex to identify oneself is like a kind of softening term; less confronting than using some of the medical terminologies.  “The medical profession could do better to stop pathologizing intersex people and accepting them as a variation in biology”.(Channy on The I in Us, 14th February 2024)
Learn about intersex within the animal kingdom.  Do variations in sex characteristics occur within the animal/zoological kingdom?  Hear about cattle and intersex.  How do turtles function?  Is red tape involved when an animal is born with variations in sex characteristics?  Does a decision have to be made whether an animal should be raised female or male?
The answers to the above questions are all contained within this episode, plus much, much more.  An episode of The I in Us  you just cannot afford to miss.
