Freedom of Speech ft. Senators Hume, Leyonhjelm and Carr

Two weeks ago we covered Liberal Senator Corey Bernardi’s pledge to introduce a bill to change Article 18 C of the Racial Discrimination Act when parliament resumed.

He didn’t waste time. Bernadri has already found support with 20 senators from the Government backbench and the cross bench signing in support of his bill.

It’s not enough, and the bill is still likely to die on the Lower House floor without PM Turnbull’s support, but the topic of Free Speech is very much alive.

Conditions Apply

Our Guests are:

Senator Jane Hume, the only Liberal backbencher who did not sign in support of the bill but believes in defending free speech,

Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjem, co-author of an identical bill introduced and defeated in 2014, who wishes to repeal Article 18c in its entirety,

And the Hon Senator for Labor Kim Carr, believes we have obligations to protect Australia’s multicultural society from racial abuse.

Senator Corey Bernardi declined our request for an interview.
