Trans self harm, Child protection & Rainbow Windows : 4th September 2017

First up we speak to Penelope Strauss from the Telethon Kids Institute about their ground-breaking report that revealed young trans people are at high risk for suicide and are approximately 10 times more likely than other young Australians to experience serious depression and anxiety.

Trans Pathways is the largest ever survey conducted into the mental health of trans young people across Australia, and the first to include the experiences of parents of trans young people.

Researchers surveyed trans young people aged 14-25 years, along with 194 parents and guardians of trans young people and found almost half of the 859 young people surveyed had attempted suicide and almost 80 per cent of them had self- harmed at some point.

Then Dove Hollier, a writer and kindergarten teacher speaks with Lara about their insight on both the report and lived experiences of the transgender community.

September 3rd to 9th is Child Protection Week, One quarter of people in Australia believe someone they know has been a victim of child abuse or neglect, new research from charity Act for Kids reveals.

Sadly, while 42% of people believe that everyone is accountable to protect our children, one in ten confess to ignoring a potential abuse situation and 41% admitted they would need to google to learn how to report suspected abuse.

During Child Protection Week, Charity Act for Kids is calling for everyone to face up to child abuse and make a difference in a child’s life. The Informers Chris Tait spoke to Dr Katrina Lions, Executive Director of Services at Act for Kids.

Finally we head to The 86 in Fitzroy, who have painted their front window to help remind people to Vote YES, should the upcoming High Court challenges to the postal plebiscite not stop it.
