World AIDS Day – Aus Red Ribbon, Our Lives & talkin bout Positive Women : 30th November 2017

With World AIDS Day tomorrow, we dedicate this episode of The Informer to look at where we have come as a community to where we need to go to provide greater support and fight the stigma and discrimination people living with HIV face daily.

The Red ribbon is an awareness ribbon, and wearing it recognizes the struggle of HIV/AIDS and is a symbol of solidarity and commitment to fight against HIV/AIDS.

But here in Australia you may notice that the ribbon is a little bit different to the ribbon worldwide, instead of the ribbon looping, it folds over in an upside down V. Ian gets the low down from Tex Mackenzie, the longest employee at VAC, about how our unique spin on the red ribbon came about.

SAMESH, the South Australian Mobilisation and Empowerment for Sexual Health, announced the launch of the Our Lives video campaign. A series exploring the lives of three HIV positive South Australians and their personal experiences of HIV stigma. Wil Louge, the Team Leader of SAMESH which is the consortium of SHINA SA & the Victorian AIDS Council tell us a bit about the campaign.

Gay men have been front and center of HIV and AIDS epidemic as well as its activism, and have received the lions share of attention, funding and support, but in the past 5 years there has been a big effort in Australia to leave no one behind and remember that there are other communities that are HIV+ who are just as much a part of the narrative and landscape, and its time we paid more attention.

Ian had a chat with Sarah Feagen, President of Positive Women Victoria who has also just joined the Board of the National Association of people living with HIV Australia and Bev Greet, one of the founders and also a past President of Positive Women Victoria.
