New South Wales Health organisation ACON has launched a new training website for health professionals and organisations, to improve their inclusion practices and better serve LGBTI clients, customers, and staff.

So how does it work?

It’s simple, you head to pridetraining.org.au and find out the best way to create a more inclusive working place for your staff and your business.

Allowing an organisation or individual to that information into their own hands with the e-training, business can actually reach out and get the help that they need at the click of a button.

It is training after all so there is a bit more to it than that. But getting the right support in the workplace is so important, especially within our transgender and gender diverse communities and intersex population.

We have repeatedly heard from members of our communities that when they go to medical professionals, they have to educate them or the GP simply doesn’t know what to do. But training such as this helps level the playing field on a professional level and create greater understanding of the diversity and needs of Australia’s LGBTI communities.

Accessing the information is simple and you can engage with it in the way that works best for you or your organization.

Dean Arcuri speaks with ACONS Managing and Training Coordinator, Joe Lonn.

St George BankThe Australian Council of Trade Unions last week called for a 7.2 per cent increase to minimum and award wages. With 60 per cent of women and 42 per cent of men in the LGBTIQ community earning less than $40,000 per year.

This increase would be a significant increase in wages for many LGBTIQ Australians.

Although last year’s report from St George Bank showed that the LGBTIQ community in Australia does, on average, earn 25 per cent more than their straight counterparts, it also outlined the financial costs for this community that negate the higher earnings.

Most LGBTIQ individuals were nearly a third less likely to own their own homes, and those who had managed to enter the property market had a mortgage 41 per cent higher than the straight individuals surveyed, plus there’s further financial strains of expensive medical procedures for many in the trans community, and high assisted reproduction costs for most LGBTIQ individuals hoping to have children.

Dean Arcuri spoke to St George Banks General Manager Ross Miller, about the research they discovered.

Between the 16 October to 14 November, independent think-tank The Australia Institute and the LGBTI National Health Alliance ran a questionnaire as part of a study to assess the effect of the Postal Survey on the LGBTIA community and its allies.

The study examines associations between exposure to negative messages, stress, coping and psychological distress.  Over nine and a half thousand people responded, with 75% of them identifying as LGBTIAQ+ and 25% identifying as friends, family and other supporters.

The primary results from the survey were released today and Ebony Bennett, the deputy Director of the Australia Institute comes on The Informer to discuss the results.
