New research reveals that over half of those over 50s believe the mid-life crisis is now a thing of the past, with one in three now experiencing a three-quarter life crisis.

As the average life expectancy in Australia continues to increase, people are starting families later, retiring later and perusing pastimes later in life.

Here’s Professor of Psychology, Nick Haslam from The University of Melbourne talking about the research.

After years of being illegal, amyl nitrate has been legalised since 1 February. Instead of sex shops where it’s been available for years, it will be available in pharmacies.

The situation is confusing and there’s a lot of information in the community. Informer Executive Producer Arion Potts spoke with John Skerrit head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration, which oversees medications in Australia. John explains why this happened and what they’re hoping to achieve.

Reproductive loss occurs more frequently than many people think. Some say that 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in miscarriage, and others will experience other forms, like adoption loss or infertility.

Dr. Christa Craven has written a new book, Reproductive Losses: Challenges to LGBTQ Family-Making. It’s the result of years of work following her own experience. One of the things she found was that many LGBTQ people felt like they were the only ones who faced reproductive loss. The book and companion website offer a number of resources.
Arion Potts spoke with Dr. Craven at the College of Wooster in Ohio in the USA.

Correction: Elizabeth Peel is a psychologist, not a quantitative socialist. Our apologies for the confusion.

Other related studies that Dr. Craven mentioned in our conversation include:

As the Morrison government’s attempt to repeal medevac laws continues, human rights advocates have joined calls for the laws to remain in place.

The Medevac legislation, passed in February, allows doctors to recommend people be evacuated from Manus and Nauru to Australia for medical treatment. Just over 100 people have been approved for transfer to Australia in around six months of the laws operating.

A Senate committee is reviewing a bill introduced by the Morrison Government which, if passed, would repeal the laws.

David Burke is the senior lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre and he says the medevac laws are an important safeguard for refugees on Nauru and Manus.

Tonight’s special episode of The Informer features a look back at some of the show’s most incisive journalism.

Earlier this year Dean Arcuri spoke to lesbian mother Fiona Newton and Anne from Rainbow Fertility about the ‘social infertility’ of LBTIQ women in same-sex relationships, and the often prohibitive cost of fertility clinics when starting a family.

Chris and Robert shared their experience with gay conversion therapy, and the damage it causes to vulnerable gay people, and Tom Morgan and Dean Arcuri sat down with Senator Janet Rice to talk about how parliamentarians could legislate against this harmful practice.

This episode of The Informer was hosted by Rachel Tyler Jones and aired on July 31st, 2018.
