Paint is an environmental hazard that can do serious damage if it ends up in waterways or landfill.

Thankfully, there’s a way you can recycle your paint: Paintback, a not-for-profit organisation established in Australia in 2016, will take your unused paint and paint cans off your hands and recycle them in an environmentally friendly way.

To find out more, Arion Potts spoke with the Chief Executive of Paintback, Karen Gomez.

We took a hacked phone for a week – and were shocked at what we found out. It’s part of the bigger trend around using mobile phones to perpetuate family violence and harrass people. Not only is it easy to do, it’s hard to find out if you’re being targeted. We spoke to a IT security analyst, family violence workers, government specialists and lawyers about what’s going on. And how you can fight back if you’re a target.

From today all Australians have two months, until October 14th, to take action on whether they opt out of the national electronic health records system known as My Health Record.

The electronic health records system has been in existence for several years but previously required specific patient opt-in and agreement for their information to be shared across their doctors and health care providers.

That default is about to change, with Australian’s key health information from GP visits, prescriptions, test results and imaging data such as x-rays to be made available in one secure electronic record – when you most need it. That is the proposed benefit but there are real concerns about privacy for the LGTBI community and how the reformed system will work in practice.

Tonight, in this special edition of The Informer, we hear from community about what they see as the benefits and concerns and how this impacts all of us. Whilst My Health Record might improve our health services it also raises concerns about who knows what about our sensitive health information.

Ian Muchamore speaks with Kent Burgess, Head of Services at Thorne Harbour Health about what My Health Record means for the community. He then speaks with Joshua Badge, an Academic at Deakin University on specific community concerns, and finally he speaks with Meredith Makeham, the Chief Medical Advisor of the Australian Digital Health Agency, the agency responsible for the rollout.

On this episode of The Informer, we hear from Monday nights panel discussion in Melbourne about the history of the marriage equality movement in Australia, as well as find out about the evaluation of a world-first treatment that is being trailed in Sydney and helps the anxiety and depression  that people living with HIV suffer. If you would like to find out more information, click here.

The Laird in Melbourne is one of Australia’s longest running gay-owned and operated venues. In 1998 The Laird and Club 80 were granted ‘Male-only’ status by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in deference to their history and service to the gay community.

While that is still a status they maintain to this day, The Laird has progressed over the years to become a haven, meeting place and party space for same-sex attracted CIS and Trans males, catering to a wide range of men who identify as men both locally and around the world. Joining us now is Brett Lasham, Co Owner of the laird Brett Lasham speaks to The Informer about this updated policy and how it came about.

But most importantly, just before we went to air,  it was announced that the AFL has told transgender footballer Hannah Mouncey that she is not eligible to be selected at tomorrows AFL womens  draft. Mouncey began transitioning in 2015 and played eight games in the Canberra Women’s competition. The AFL said in a statement that Mouncey would have had an “unreasonable advantage” over other AFLW players. The AFL has made a decision that the physical disparity between Hannah and other AFLW players is significant, in that it would have an effect on the AFLW competition and give rise to an unreasonable advantage.

We discuss the fairness of this, but as it is breaking, this will be explored more in depth on the next episode of The Informer.

Ian and Dean are your hosts for this episode.
