The Latest in LGBTIQ+ Health and Policy is a podcast that brings you the health and well-being hot topic discussions that matter to LGBTIQ+ people.

On this episode, we chat to Scott, Penguin Keeper at Sea Life Aquarium about their same-sex penguin couple, Sphen & Magic.

Sphen and Magic began developing a strong bond in 2018 and became inseparable before breeding season. As breeding season fast approached, the couple started collecting ‘pebbles’ to create a nest in their spot, and now have more pebbles than any other couple! Swapping duties daily, while one of the parents is doing their best to incubate the egg, the other is patrolling the perimeters of the nest, warding off any potential pebble thieves or over-inquisitive neighbours. The team at Sea Life Sydney fostered a real egg to them from another couple who had two. In October of 2018, the two successfully hatched baby Sphengic! Today, the couple is still going strong and has paired up for a third breeding season!

Her new poetry collection, “C+nto & Othered Poems”, was released in June 2021, and enters the private lives of women from the butch counterculture, telling the inside story of the protests they led in the 90s, to reclaim their bodies as their own.
Part memoir, part conjecture, C+nto explores sexuality and gender in poetry that is lyrical, expansive, imagistic, epic and intimate.
Joelle and Triana chat about her experiences as a butch lesbian living in 90s London, the stories and characters throughout her life that inspired this incredible book of poetry, as well as discussing the fundamental place poetry has amongst the LGBTIQ+ community and the impact it can have on our health and wellbeing.
She also shares an excerpt from the book – a poem called “Heaven, 1995”.
