Gillian’s guest this week Tim Lennox (aka Robert Lennox Suggett), broadcaster, writer, photographer and teacher needs no introduction to Joy listeners. A life member of Joy, Tim has volunteered at the station for 23 years starting just a year after it began. He has been the News Director at Joy for over 20 years and still trains Joy newsreaders. These days he is establishing a new career as an Art & Editorial Photographer and recently had a successful exhibition at the Warrnambool Art Gallery – Nasho 57: 98 Days at Pucka – featuring photographs he took in 1957 as a 19 year old doing National Service in the Australian Army. He is currently negotiating to do a regional tour of Nasho 57 and taking street photographs in preparation for his next exhibition. He talks with Gillian about this and some of his (many) other interests including writing Terse Verse for Growned Ups and 50 Word Mini-Sagas (which he hopes to publish); his research into all matters esoteric, being introduced to the Beatles by Rolf Harris and much, much more. Along the way we hear from Boney M, The Beatles, Norman Greenbaum and the Eurythmics.

This week Gillian is joined in the studio by cabaret entertainer extraordinaire LuLu LaMarr aka the Toast Of Tasmania; the Empress of Entertainment and Baroness of Bling. LuLu talks with Gillian about her world travels spreading joy, sequins and sparkle to brighten up people’s lives on cruise ships, at the Edinburgh Festival or in Reykjavik – where the crowds that come to see her can be counted on one hand. She sings (and signs) two numbers from her cabaret show You Ring Me Up (written by Darryl Peebles) and a cover version of Bonnie Rait’s Bright Eyes, accompanied by Gillian on a twirling chair. The music LuLu can’t resist dancing to including Aretha Franklin’s Think and, as a rousing finale, Dolly Parton’s 9-5 where she demonstrates her prize winning karaoke skills.

Gillian’s guest for the first half of the show is Lauren Elizabeth, singer, songwriter, teacher and ukulele player. Lauren talks with Gillian about her new show, a homage to Joni Mitchell entitled: This is Joni – The Art & Music of Joni Mitchell, playing at the Paris Cat, June 16th (sold out) and the Flying Saucer at Elsternwick, June 30th. Lauren tells about growing up in a musical family, deciding to be a singer after hearing Joni’s unique voice when she was 12 years old, developing the show and the difficult task of choosing which songs to include. Lauren gives us a live rendition of Joni’s the Circle Game and also plays one of her own songs, Fall to Pieces.

In the second half of the show Gillian stays with ‘the folkie business’ and plays songs by Laura Marley, The Pierces, First Aid Kit, Sarah Blasko, more Joni and the inimitable Kirsty MacColl

HIVE Park are an indie rock/pop outfit featuring lyrical purity and sensitive instrumental arrangement. Cassie talks with Gillian about the genesis of the band, the emotional relationship between voice and violin, their CD (and Vinyl) launch on June 4th at MeMo Music Hall and why there was a 3 year delay between recording and launching the album.

Returning to the show this week is Barbara Carrellas, award winning theatre manager, sex-educator, actor and author of the best seller Urban Tantra (a revised edition Urban Tantra – Sacred Sex for the 21st Century will be out in November). Barbara tells Gillian how her career as a sex educator began at a healing circle in New York during the AIDS epidemic where she met people, including Annie Sprinkle, interested in developing Ecstatic Safe Sex. She and Annie became Sex Nerd Lab Rats together and experimented with using Tantra, breathing, energy patterns, sex sounds and massage to achieve sexual ecstasy. Based on her research she developed a series of Sacred Sex workshops that she has delivered around the world since 1992. These workshops now include gender non-conforming classes, and she recently taught Caitlyn Jenner about gender-free orgasms. This week’s guests are Des Bishop, Irish American comedian, author and TV star, here for the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Tom Millington, spoken word poet and electronic, pop and roots musician.

Des talks with Gillian about his fearless approach to stand up comedy, his current show Grey Matters and his TV shows where, through cultural immersion, he learnt two languages (Irish and Chinese) and did stand up comedy in both. He’d like to do Arabic next – are you listening SBS?

UK born Tom describes life on the Mornington Peninsula as going home to a holiday. He talks to Gillian about finding your art through immersion with parts of your soul, audience micro gestures, living musically in the moment and how to not take a lack of applause personally. This week Gillian is on safari at the Zambi Wildlife Retreat where she talks with co-founders Donna Wilson (Operations Manager) and Tracey Griffith (Director) to the background sounds of 19 lions, 4 tigers and a puma. These cat lovers extraordinaire tell us how they came up with the idea of a retreat for retired lions and tigers run solely by volunteers, how they feed and take care of their charges, their celebrity supporters and how Zambi has expanded to take on other rescue animals, as well as students studying captive animals. We also hear a bit about their love lives and some of their favourite songs, including I Feel Love, Star Boy and Can I Have it Like That.

San dee and Rachel talk with Gillian about being The Retro Girls; hosting Pandora’s, an inclusive monthly event for queer women and friends and how they got hold of a firetruck for Pride.
