The Source

12 Aug 2017

Show 001 / Poker to Base

Music

Episode 1 features songs from 2PACJoe Cocker, and Timomatic. The final track on Episode 0 was Ray Charles “I Got a Woman”, it has been sampled widely by Kanye West’s “Gold Digger”. The vocals in West’s song were done by Jamie Fox who also played Ray Charles in the movie “Ray” released in 2004.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Ace of Base / Timomatic

Timomatic came third in the fifth season of Australia’s Got Talent.

Listening to “Do what you want” you can hear that he has borrowed off Ace of Base “All that she wants” released back in ’92.  Yes thats right all that she wants is another baby and it was probably Timomatic.

Ace of Base’s song was not entirely original either as they admittedly drew inspiration from the 1980 song “Another Mother” by Kayo.  Another swedish music group.

David May feat. Moises Modesto / The Verve

“Superstar” by David May (feat. Moises Modesto) has sampled from The Verve’s 1997 hit “Bittersweet Symphony”.

Something you might not know is that The Verve didn’t have an original hit.

When “Bittersweet Symphony” was released there were claims of plagiarism by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, and I agree that those claims are founded.  The Rolling Stones’ song is itself strongly inspired from “The Last Time” from the Staple Singers.  What a rabbit hole!  Check it out if you like.

I’ve always loved the film clip of “Bitter Sweet Symphony”.  In it the singer Richard Ashcroft walks down a busy pavement, oblivious to what is going on around and refusing to change his stride or direction throughout.

Jacksons Five / Madonna

“Sorry” is a track by Madonna released back in 2005 off her album “Confessions on a Dance Floor”.

It was a disco influenced song that made you want to hop on your skates and do the hustle.  One of the most successful tracks of the 00’s.

Lyrically the song has excerpts of different languages including French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Hebrew, Hindi, Polish and Japanese.

Madonna has borrowed the sound of her track from a famous Jacksons Five track “Can You Feel It”. Released 24 years prior in 1981.
