Show 004 / Love Made Sexy

Music

Episode 4 features songs from Carly Rae JepsonBruce Springsteen, and Taylor Swift featuring guest presenter DJ Magnus. Check out his latest podcast:

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

“Music Reworked” by DJ Magnus

The final track on Episode 3 was “I Got U” by Duke Dumont. The vocals are hauntingly like those of Whitney Houston and the lyrics actually come from her 1998 song “My Love Is Your Love”.

Song Notes

Taylor Swift / Right Said Fred

Compare “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred and “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift. You can hear “I’m Too Sexy” interpolated in Swift’s new song.

The reason for this is that the writers of Taylor Swift’s track were Right Said Fred. If you listen to the track you can make out the same rhythm as “I’m too sexy” when Swift sings “Look what you made me do”.

Queen & David Bowie / Vanilla Ice

The sample from Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” is taken from the 1981 song “Under Pressure” by the legendary British rock band Queen and David Bowie.

There was controversy around the use of this sample in “Ice Ice Baby” in that permission was not sought from Queen or Bowie. Vanilla Ice first denied the accusation of plagiarism, then claimed that he had modified it and therefore did not need to pay royalties. A subsequent law suit from Bowie and Queen resulted in them being rightfully credited.

Selena Gomez & the Scene / Coldplay

“My Dilemma” by Selena Gomez and The Scene is a song released in 2011. It is a song about conflicted feelings towards a potential breakup.

If you listen to the introductory chord sequence of “My Dilemma” you can make out Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”.

Ironically Coldplay also received allegations of plagarism for their work from the group Creakyboards with their track “Songs I Didn’t Write”. I had a listen and the first 5 seconds of the track sound very similar.

Judge for yourself. The song is below.
