The Source

26 Sep 2017

Show 007 / Pino Dino Lopez

Music

Episode 7 features songs from MeckSam Brown, and JLo.

The final track on Episode 6 was “Don’t Call Me Baby” by Madison Avenue. The song is a very obvious copy of Ma quale idea by Pino D’Angiò.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Meck / Felix

Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” which is lyrically referenced in this track is in there, but the sample that I thought was most significant was from “Don’t You Want Me” by Felix. What a really classic and familiar sample!

I have put in Madonna’s track because – I like her!

JLo / 20th Century Steel Band

“Jenny from the Block” by JLo or Jennifer Lopez featured rappers Jadakiss and Styles P.

The song is about Lopez not changing her style despite her fame and fortune, and never forgetting her roots where she came from.

The song was noted by critics for using a large amount of musical samples from songs such as 20th Century Steel Band’s song “Heaven and Hell Is on Earth” released in 1975 and Boogie Down Productions’ “South Bronx” released in 1987. It also contained an unaccredited sample from the track “Watch Out Now” (1999) by The Beatnuts, who later called Epic Records and Lopez out on this by releasing a song entitled “Confused Rappers”.

MiC LOWRY / Phil Collins

That was “Oh Lord” MiC LOWRY released back in 2016.

It contains sampling and adaptation of the Phil Collins hit “In the Air Tonight” both in lyrics and music.

Released back in 1981

The song has been sampled by many other artists, including Shaquille O’Neal in his song “Edge of Night”, Nas in his song “One Mic”, and Tupac Shakur on his tracks “Starin’ Through My Rear View” and “Letter to the President”. Other tracks which include samples of “In the Air Tonight” include DMX’s “I Can Feel It”, Krayzie Bone’s “Silent Warrior”, Joe Budden’s “Rest in Peace (In the Air)”, Sean Kingston’s “Can You Feel It”, Young Buck’s “New York City”, Big Audio Dynamite’s “Innocent Child”, Lil’ Kim’s “In the Air Tonite”, Ke$ha’s “Love Into the Light”, and Av LMKR’s “In The Air”
