The final track on Episode 16 was “Ready or Not” by The Fugees.

The matching track is “Boadicea” by Enya

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Seal / Led Zeppelin

Released as his official debut single, “Crazy” became one of Seal’s biggest hits, reaching the top five in the United Kingdom while becoming his first top ten single in the United States. It has since been covered by several artists, including Alanis Morissette, whose version was released as a single from her album The Collection (2005).

The Led Zeppelin song “The Crunge” was release in 1973 from the album “Houses of the Holy” is the mirror track and get this – zepplin was not credited back to Seal’s song.

Amy Winehouse / Marvin Gaye

“Tears Dry On Their Own” is a song released by Amy Winehouse in 2011.

While the melody and lyrics are composed by Winehouse, the music behind her voice is a sample interpolation of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s 1967 Motown classic hit “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. The original ballad version of the track is featured on the posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures (2011). The song was featured in the documentary film based on the life and death of Winehouse, Amy (2015) and was also included on the film’s soundtrack.

Big Audio Dynamite II / Pigmeat Markham

“Rush” was a song released by Big Audio Dynamite II in 1991.

They are a British musical group formed in 1984 by the ex-guitarist and singer of The Clash, Mick Jones.

The song samples several songs including the keyboard component of The Who’s song “Baba O’Riley”, the organ from the introduction to the Deep Purple song “Child in Time”, a drum break from Tommy Roe’s “Sweet Pea”, drums and guitars from a break in Pigmeat Markham’s “Here Comes the Judge”, a line from The Sugarhill Gang’s song “Rapper’s Delight” where Big Bank Hank raps “a time to laugh, a time to cry”, and a vocal sample from Peter Sellers in Fred Flange’s song “You Keep Me Swingin'”, where Sellers talks about “rhythm and melody”.

Episode 16 features songs from Barry WhiteThe Fugees, and Smokey Robinson.

The final track on Episode 15 was “Saturday Night” by Whigfield.

The matching track is “One More Mission” by Rockets

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Katy Perry / Smokey Robinson

The song “Power” by Katy Perry was released this year.

“Power” explores a theme of self empowerment, critics have noted that the song “approximates feminism by politicizing a personal struggle for control.

The track contains excerpts from “Being with You” written and performed by Smokey Robinson. The track was released in 1981 on the gold certified album same name as the track.

Rita Ora / Madonna

As interpreted by the Rita, “Anywhere” is a love song about escapism and “having a desperation of wanting to break free from whatever it is you’re going through.”

So get this – I can hear a Madonna song in this. Specifically the 1984 track “Dress You Up”.

I’ve been told by other people that they can’t hear the similarities – but I can really hear them. What do you think?

Blackstreet / Bill Withers

The song “No Diggity” was released by Blackstreet and Dr Dre. 1996 and dominated the charts.

The song’s musical backing track is an altered sample from the beginning of “Grandma’s Hands” by R&B singer Bill Withers.

Bill Withers of course is also the man behind the track “Aint No Sunshine”.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Grace feat. G-Eazy / Leslie Gore

The song “You don’t own me” by Grace featuring rapper G-Eazy was released in 2015 one month after the original artist of this song passed away.

The original artist of course was Leslie Gore.

The song expresses a threatened emancipation, as the singer tells a lover that he does not own her, that he is not to tell her what to do or what to say, and that he is not to put her on display. The song’s lyrics became an inspiration for younger women and are sometimes cited as a factor in the second wave feminist movement. Gore said, “My take on the song was: I’m 17, what a wonderful thing, to stand up on a stage and shake your finger at people and sing you don’t own me.” In Gore’s obituary, The New York Times referred to “You Don’t Own Me” as “indelibly defiant”.

Double S, Wiley / Bonnie Anderson

That was “Get Paid” by Double S and Wiley and released this year.

This was a tip off song. Credit goes to JJ for this find.

While the origal writer of the song goes uncredited – the sample is undenyable.

The song is Blackout” by Bonnie Anderson.

Selena Gomez / Talking Heads

“Bad Liar” by Selena Gomez has been a hit this year.

She co-wrote the song with long-time collaborators Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, and the producer, Ian Kirkpatrick. The track samples the bassline from Talking Heads’ 1977 single “Psycho Killer”, written by David Byrne, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, who are therefore credited.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

All Saints / Madonna

“Pure Shores” by All Saints was released back in 1999.

A critic compared the song to Madonna’s album Ray of Light. Get this – the critic was quoted as saying “[Pure Shores] is an inane enough confection of bleeps and fieldmouse rhythms which sounds so close to Madonna that it’s almost indistinguishable.

According to Melbourne’s Herald Sun, Madonna was reportedly livid when producer William Orbit gave this futuristic dream-pop to the UK girl band and not her.

Kelly Clarkston / Anastacia

Whether intentional or not the song sounds quite similar in the melody and the chords.

The original writers or artist have not been credited in this case.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello / Bill Withers

“I know what you did last summer” was performed by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.

While unintentional the “I Know I know I know” lyric earned Bill Withers a credit for “I know what you did last summer”. Withers did not need to legally persue the credit.

The final track on Episode 12 was “Too Funky” by George Michael.

Lyrically, the song is a basic, animalistic plea for sexual activity.

It features a clip from The Graduate; Anne Bancroft’s line of “I am not trying to seduce you… Would you like me to seduce you? Is that what you’re trying to tell me?”. As an intro of the song and it is repeated during the final crescendo. The song then ends with a sample from an episode of the Tony Hancock Show called ‘The Radio Ham,’ spoken by actress Annie Leake (“Would you stop playing with that radio of yours? I’m trying to get to sleep,” a sample that also appeared in the song “Let Mom Sleep” from the video game Jet Set Radio).

The song’s hook also samples Jocelyn Brown’s 1984 hit “Somebody Else’s Guy”.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Coolio / Stevie Wonder

The Coolio and L.V. co-wrote the song with its producer Doug Rasheed, with Stevie Wonder receiving writing credits for the sampling of his song “Pastime Paradise” from his album Songs in the Key of Life.

The Stevie Wonder sample is the reason why this is one of few Coolio tracks without profanity, as Wonder would not allow it. Coolio said, “I had a few vulgarities…and he wasn’t with that. So I changed it. Once he heard it, he thought it was incredible.”

M People and David Morales / CeCe Peniston

This is actually a cover of a song originally performed and written by Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, first recorded by the group, the Small Faces. The song reached number three in the UK Singles Chart in 1967.

The similarities I found in this track were in fact the similarity in the piano in M People’s cover to the classic anthem “Finally” by CeCe Peniston.

Corona / Say When !

The associated song did not have a lot of information I could find – but if you listen to the track – you can actually hear Corona’s lyrics for this song contained in this older track.

I suspect that both songs had the same songwriters.

The song is called “Save Me” by dutch duo “Say When” released back in 1987.

Song Notes

Rave Radio / Dream Academy

“Carry You” by Rave Radio featuring Gamble and Burke is a newbie to the Joy daytime playlist. The song has sampled from the track “Life In A Northern Town” by the Dream Academy. Life in a Northern Town was also sampled by Sunchyme by Dario G.

Beyonce / Chi-Lites

“Crazy in Love” by Beyonce and JAY Z was released back in 2003. This track is one of my all time favourites.

Until doing the research for the source I never realised that this song has sampled from “Are You My Woman?” by the Chi-lites released back before I was born in 1970.

Arrested Development / Sly & The Family Stone

“People Everyday” is a song by American rap/Hip hop group Arrested Development. It was released in May 1992 as the second single from their debut album 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of….

It uses the chorus and basic structure of Sly & the Family Stone’s 1969 hit “Everyday People,” with new verses written by lead singer Speech. He also sings the lead, with additional lyrics sung by Dionne Farris, who is not an official member of the group. It also uses a sample from “Tappan Zee” By Bob James

Song Notes

Salt n Pepa / The Sweet Inspirations

That was “Shoop” by Salt n Pepa here on the source. One of the group’s most succesful singles released back in 1993.

The line “The voodoo that you do so well” was taken from the 1929 Cole Porter song “You Do Something to Me”.

This song uses a sample of the Ike Turner-penned “I’m Blue (The Gong-Gong Song)” by The Ikettes.

However, during my research I discovered a cover of the ikettes song sounds a lot more like “Shoop” – so I suspect they got their inspiration from this song. Its a cover also with the same name “I’m Blue” by Sweet Inspiration.

Galantis / Bettye Swann

That was “Peanut Butter Jelly” by Galantis here on the the Source on JOY.

The Nu-Disco song heavily features a sample of the 1974 single “Kiss My Love Goodbye” by Bettye Swann.

Goldfrapp / Norman Greenbaum

That was “Ooh La La” by Goldfrapp. The song was released back in 2005.

The song was composed as a collaborative effort between Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory while jamming in the recording studio, bouncing song ideas off each other. Goldfrapp contributed the song’s lyrics, and has described the song as being “sulky, sexual and a bit ambiguous”. In “Ooh La La”, she confesses to wanting only a sexual relationship without romance.

The song has been compared to Norman Greenbaum’s 1969 glam rock song “Spirit in the Sky”, Juana Molina’s 2003 song “Sonamos” and Rachel Stevens’ 2004 song “Some Girls” (itself heavily influenced by Goldfrapp’s own “Strict Machine”). Gregory noted that comparisons to Greenbaum were made when the duo released the song “Train” in 2003, adding that the two tracks share the same glam swing. Goldfrapp rejected comparisons to Stevens, stating that “Some Girls” was “very bland”.

Song Notes

Missy Elliott / Hot Streak

The song “Lose Control” hit number 7 in the Aus Music Charts.

It was released as the lead single from Elliott’s sixth studio album, “The Cookbook”. It contains samples from Hot Streak’s “Body Work” and Cybotron’s “Clear”.

Hot Streak’s “Body Work” was sampled 28 times including the Missy Song you just heard, and also Dimples D, Norman Cook, Alesso and get this – Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

TLC / CID

New addition to the JOY music library – “Creepin'” by CID prominently samples the 1994 TLC hit “Creep”.

The lyrics of “Creep” portray the singers as women that cheat back at their lovers for the attention. This context was considered to be controversial at the time as it was strongly opposed by member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, who even threatened to wear black tape over her mouth on its accompanying music video.

Portishead / Alessia Cara

The music video to “Glory Box” by Portishead is set in the 1950s, featuring lead singer Beth Gibbons as a jazz singer at a club while various office workers watch her perform. Sexual tension begins to rise between certain characters, as eventually, all of the workers, as separate couples, attend the club where the vocalist is performing. Apart from the band members, the entire cast of the video appears in drag.

The song appeared in a Levi’s Jeans commercial.

The songs main instrumental was sampled for Alessia Cara’s 2015 song “Here.”

The same sample was also used in “Hell Is Around the Corner” by Tricky released in the same year as “Glory Box”.

The original sample comes from Isaac Hayes 1971 track “Ikes Rap II”

Song Notes

Janet Jackson / Change – Luther Vandross

All for You (Janet Jackson) released back in 2001. The song is about flirting with someone on the dancefloor. This song earnt Janet the title of “The Queen of Radio” due to its success on the airwaves.

The sample from this song is from a group named “Change” with iconic member Luther Vandross. The song is called “The Glow of Love” and has also been sampled by UK based Phats and Smalls in their song “Turn Around”.

DJ Kool / Kool & the Gang

That was “Let Me Clear My Throat” by DJ Kool. Released back in 1996

The musical content of this song consists entirely of two samples: the introductory fanfare of “Hollywood Swinging” (1974) by Kool & The Gang, used in both the intro and pre-chorus, and “The 900 Number” (1987) by The 45 King (which itself includes a two-bar loop of the saxophone riff that was lifted from “Unwind Yourself” (1968) by Marva Whitney), used in the verses and chorus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY26KNRhbOA

Antoine Clamaran and Agua Sin Gas / The Shapeshifters

“Freak It” by Antoine Clamaran and Agua Sin Gas has a sample that was taken from the 2004 track “Lola’s theme” by the UK house duo “the Shapeshifters”.

The orchestral sounding music in the song inspired the emergence of similar orchestral-sounding dance music over the following two years (such as Inaya Day’s “Nasty Girl”), before more electronic dance music became popular in mid-2006. These sounds also owe much to 1970s disco, and so the resulting genre can be described as nu-disco or disco house.

Lola’s theme has sampled from Anthony White’s “Love Me Tonight”, and “What About My Love” by Johnnie Taylor. Check them out below.

Song Notes

Meck / Felix

Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” which is lyrically referenced in this track is in there, but the sample that I thought was most significant was from “Don’t You Want Me” by Felix. What a really classic and familiar sample!

I have put in Madonna’s track because – I like her!

JLo / 20th Century Steel Band

“Jenny from the Block” by JLo or Jennifer Lopez featured rappers Jadakiss and Styles P.

The song is about Lopez not changing her style despite her fame and fortune, and never forgetting her roots where she came from.

The song was noted by critics for using a large amount of musical samples from songs such as 20th Century Steel Band’s song “Heaven and Hell Is on Earth” released in 1975 and Boogie Down Productions’ “South Bronx” released in 1987. It also contained an unaccredited sample from the track “Watch Out Now” (1999) by The Beatnuts, who later called Epic Records and Lopez out on this by releasing a song entitled “Confused Rappers”.

MiC LOWRY / Phil Collins

That was “Oh Lord” MiC LOWRY released back in 2016.

It contains sampling and adaptation of the Phil Collins hit “In the Air Tonight” both in lyrics and music.

Released back in 1981

The song has been sampled by many other artists, including Shaquille O’Neal in his song “Edge of Night”, Nas in his song “One Mic”, and Tupac Shakur on his tracks “Starin’ Through My Rear View” and “Letter to the President”. Other tracks which include samples of “In the Air Tonight” include DMX’s “I Can Feel It”, Krayzie Bone’s “Silent Warrior”, Joe Budden’s “Rest in Peace (In the Air)”, Sean Kingston’s “Can You Feel It”, Young Buck’s “New York City”, Big Audio Dynamite’s “Innocent Child”, Lil’ Kim’s “In the Air Tonite”, Ke$ha’s “Love Into the Light”, and Av LMKR’s “In The Air”

The final track on Episode 5 was “Hotline Bling” by Drake. If you listen carefully to the percussion at the beginning of the track it sounds a lot like “Why Can’t We Live Together” by Timmy Thomas.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

MC Hammer / Rick James

The 1990 track “You Can’t Touch This” is considered to be MC Hammer’s signature song and is his most successful single.

Along with Hammer, Rick James shares songwriting credits with Alonzo Miller because the song samples the prominent opening riff of “Super Freak”.

Missy Elliot / Frank Smith

One of my favourite all time songs – “Gossip Folks (feat Ludacris)” by Missy Elliot is a goodie. The track was released back in 2002.

There were some really awesome remixes done of this track as well by Mousse T and FatBoy Slim which are well worth checking out.

The song reached number 22 in the charts and stayed in the charts for 12 weeks.

The refrain of “Gossip Folks” samples the 1981 song “Double Dutch Bus” by Frankie Smith. Have a listen through the tracks below.

“Double Dutch Bus” by Frankie Smith

Sarah McLachlan / Harry Chapin

That was Sarah McLachlan “Just Like Me” featuring DMC – half of Run DMC.

This song used the same melody and almost the same chorus lyrics, but with entirely revised lyrics in the verses so as to make the song about DMC’s adoption and feelings towards his birth mother.

“Cats in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin was released all the way back in 1974. The song was also notably covered by Ugly Kid Joe.

The final track on Episode 4 was “Feels” by Calvin Harris. If you listen carefully to the track you can distinctly make out Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Lets Groove”.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Katy Perry – Nicki Minaj / DJ Le Roi – Roland Clark

The sample at the beginning of the song was from “I Get Deep” by DJ Le Roi and Roland Clark.

This song has been sampled several times with the most notable being Star 69 Fatboy Slim and a more recent addition Katy Perry “Swish Swish” feat. Nicki Minaj.

Maroon 5 – SZA / NEIKED – Dyo

The song contains interpolations of NEIKED’s “Sexual” with Victor Radstrom and Dyo credited as songwriters for “What Lovers Do”.

“Sexual” is a high energy pop track and has elements of funk. Hit number 4 in the ARIAs on its release in 2016.

Paloma Faith / Monica – Brandy

If you listen to the song you can definitely hear the 1998 track by Monica and Brandy “The Boy is mine”.

The writers of “The Boy Is Mine” were inspired by seeing an episode of the Jerry Springer show on love triangles. The name of the track was largely inspired from the Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson duet “The Girl is Mine” done back in 1982.

The original artists were not credited by Paloma Faith.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

“Music Reworked” by DJ Magnus

The final track on Episode 3 was “I Got U” by Duke Dumont. The vocals are hauntingly like those of Whitney Houston and the lyrics actually come from her 1998 song “My Love Is Your Love”.

Song Notes

Taylor Swift / Right Said Fred

Compare “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred and “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift. You can hear “I’m Too Sexy” interpolated in Swift’s new song.

The reason for this is that the writers of Taylor Swift’s track were Right Said Fred. If you listen to the track you can make out the same rhythm as “I’m too sexy” when Swift sings “Look what you made me do”.

Queen & David Bowie / Vanilla Ice

The sample from Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” is taken from the 1981 song “Under Pressure” by the legendary British rock band Queen and David Bowie.

There was controversy around the use of this sample in “Ice Ice Baby” in that permission was not sought from Queen or Bowie. Vanilla Ice first denied the accusation of plagiarism, then claimed that he had modified it and therefore did not need to pay royalties. A subsequent law suit from Bowie and Queen resulted in them being rightfully credited.

Selena Gomez & the Scene / Coldplay

“My Dilemma” by Selena Gomez and The Scene is a song released in 2011. It is a song about conflicted feelings towards a potential breakup.

If you listen to the introductory chord sequence of “My Dilemma” you can make out Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”.

Ironically Coldplay also received allegations of plagarism for their work from the group Creakyboards with their track “Songs I Didn’t Write”. I had a listen and the first 5 seconds of the track sound very similar.

Judge for yourself. The song is below.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

The final track on Episode 2 was “Levels” by Avicii. The vocal sample was of course the dearly departed Etta James.

Her continuing relevance was affirmed in 2011 when the DJ achieved substantial chart success with the song “Levels”, which samples her 1962 song “Something’s Got a Hold on Me”. The same sample was used by the rapper Flo Rida in his 2011 hit single “Good Feeling”. Both artists issued statements of condolence upon James’s death in 2012.

Song Notes

Faithless / Sash! / Kariya

The main refrain of “Insomnia” is a heavy sample of 1989′ “Let Me Love You for Tonight” by UK artist Kariya. Norwegian electronica artist Biosphere has also claimed that Faithless sampled the bassline from his single “Novelty Waves”.  Faithless have expressed their displeasure with the fact that elements of this song were reused by Sash! for his single “Encore Une Fois”.

Fergie / Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock / Lyn Collins

“You Already Know” Fergie feat. Nicki Minaj directly samples from “Think” by Lyn Collins. So much so if you listen carefully to the track you can hear Lyn’s vocals!

“Think (About It)” by Lyn Collins was released back in 1972. The recording was produced by James Brown and you can even make out his voice in the woo part of the wooh yeah. The yeah is done by Bobby Bird.

The “wooh yeah” has been used in literally hundreds of songs with one of the first sampling the hit was Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock performing “It Takes Two”/Get On The Dancefloor (1988) – although it was first done by Cookie Crew in their performance of “Females”.

You can find more songs that use the “wooh yeah” sample here.

Dannii Minogue & Soul Seekerz / Vicki Sue Robinson

“Perfection” began as an instrumental track by the Soul Seekerz that samples “Turn The Beat Around”, which was originally performed by disco singer Vicki Sue Robinson. Simon Langford from the Soul Seekerz decided to sample the song after watching the end credits for the film The Specialist. Langford excited by his song idea phoned his writing partner Julian Napolitano. Two days later, Napolitano had completed close to seventy percent of the song, much to the surprise of Langford, who had been preoccupied with paper work. After completing the instrumental track, the group were approached by All Around the World Records, who wanted to use the track for a song by Minogue. Minogue, Rob Davis and Therese Grankvist then wrote lyrics to accompany the music composed by the Soul Seekerz.

In a review for Allmusic, John Lucas called the song a “painfully generic attempt at recapturing former glories” and “beneath someone of Minogue’s calibre”. He also criticized Minogue’s vocals, calling them “uninspired”.

I don’t agree with Lucas’ review. Thumbs up for the track.

The final track on Episode 1 was “Switch Lanes” by Rittz feat. Mike Posner. If you listen carefully to the riff you can distinctly make out Joy Division’s “Love will tear us apart”.

Song Notes

Nicki Minaj / Sir Mix-A-Lot

Done with full permission from the original artist… Although having said that the Original Artist was inspired by a beer commercial.

DJ Khaled / Santana

Khaled song heavily samples from the 1999 hit single “Maria Maria” by American Latin rock band Santana for the song “Wild Thoughts”.

Several critics praised its composition and Rihanna for commanding the song, however others felt that song was too similar to the original. Commercially, “Wild Thoughts” reached number two in Australia

Santana and The Product G&B also reacted positively to the song stating the singers brought a “new dimension” to it.

Daft Punk / Eddie Johns

Daft Punk’s “One More time” was released back in the year 2000. The song features vocals by Romanthony which has been extensively auto tuned.

“One More Time” is believed to contain a sample of “More Spell on You” by Eddie Johns, but this is uncredited. Daft Punk reportedly denied using any samples for the song. A later report however indicated that sampling of the original had been officially approved.

The final track on Episode 0 was Ray Charles “I Got a Woman”, it has been sampled widely by Kanye West’s “Gold Digger”. The vocals in West’s song were done by Jamie Fox who also played Ray Charles in the movie “Ray” released in 2004.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Ace of Base / Timomatic

Timomatic came third in the fifth season of Australia’s Got Talent.

Listening to “Do what you want” you can hear that he has borrowed off Ace of Base “All that she wants” released back in ’92.  Yes thats right all that she wants is another baby and it was probably Timomatic.

Ace of Base’s song was not entirely original either as they admittedly drew inspiration from the 1980 song “Another Mother” by Kayo.  Another swedish music group.

David May feat. Moises Modesto / The Verve

“Superstar” by David May (feat. Moises Modesto) has sampled from The Verve’s 1997 hit “Bittersweet Symphony”.

Something you might not know is that The Verve didn’t have an original hit.

When “Bittersweet Symphony” was released there were claims of plagiarism by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, and I agree that those claims are founded.  The Rolling Stones’ song is itself strongly inspired from “The Last Time” from the Staple Singers.  What a rabbit hole!  Check it out if you like.

I’ve always loved the film clip of “Bitter Sweet Symphony”.  In it the singer Richard Ashcroft walks down a busy pavement, oblivious to what is going on around and refusing to change his stride or direction throughout.

Jacksons Five / Madonna

“Sorry” is a track by Madonna released back in 2005 off her album “Confessions on a Dance Floor”.

It was a disco influenced song that made you want to hop on your skates and do the hustle.  One of the most successful tracks of the 00’s.

Lyrically the song has excerpts of different languages including French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Hebrew, Hindi, Polish and Japanese.

Madonna has borrowed the sound of her track from a famous Jacksons Five track “Can You Feel It”. Released 24 years prior in 1981.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Cyprus Hill / Dusty Springfield

Cyprus Hill’s “Hits from the Bong” has sampled Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man”. In fact this song also samples from Lee Dorsey’s “Get Outta My Life Woman” one of the most sampled tracks in Hip Hop history.

Without these two samples the song would be vocals and sound effects.

Tears for Fears / Rogue Traders

The coda of the Rogue Traders song “In Love Again” features a sample of “Head Over Heels” by Tears for Fears.

Head over heels was also sampled by other artists including Leona Lewis, Cash Money, Marvellous and Diddy.

Outkast / Brothers Johnson

“Ms Jackson” by Outkast has sampled “Strawberry Letter 23” by the Brothers Johnson. The tracks sound different due to pitch shifting and reversing. Of course the song also features an altered version of a tune from “Bridal Chorus” from the opera Lohengrin by German composer Richard Wagner (also known as the “Wedding March”), played on piano.
