On this Bi-Polycast Anthony talks to mental health social worker and relationship therapist Tracey from Orana Health Services about providing relationship counselling to poly and queer people.

Tracey explains why some poly people may access her services for navigating through the complexities of poly relationship tensions. Tracey and Anthony highlight the importance for relationship therapists to scrutinise the social, cultural and political structures where poly relationships are formed, as opposed to simply offering targeted interventions to the individuals in poly relationships. Tracey has over twenty years experience and training as a health professional assisting individuals, couples, families (different relationships and families including rainbow and polyamorous) with a range of needs around emotional and psychological distress, bringing an empathetic, non-judgmental and compassionate approach to the therapeutic relationship.

Welcome to Episode 4 of the Bi-Polycast. Anthony chats to Dr Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli who has gained national and international recognition as a writer, researcher, lecturer and consultant in the issues of cultural diversity, gender diversity, sexual diversity, family diversity, HIV/AIDS, and social diversity in health and education, with a specific focus on adolescence and young people. Maria shares findings from an Australian focus group of 13 polyfamily participants and presents an overview of previous research on polyparenting. Maria’s research highlights issues of polyparents being “out” to their children, relations with extended families and friendship networks, and navigating broader formal and informal societal systems and structures which can be some of the greatest concerns for polyparents. Maria adds that shared child rearing is creating new forms of kinship structures that are beneficial to both children and adults in polyfamilies.

Anne takes us back to where it all began for her as polyamorous and explains the early beginnings of Poly Vic, now a well-known and regularly attended discussion and support space for poly people and their allies. Anne talks about how in the early 1990s her journey into what she wanted took her beyond monogamy and into the exciting new territory of multiple ethical relationships. Anne shares a variety of poly specific experiences, such as other people’s reactions to you when you ‘come out’ as poly, some of the common misconceptions about polyamory, the importance of accessing support from other poly people, and why polyamory and ethical non-monogamy are becoming more and more common options for relationships.
