Show 258

You got it by Bonnie Raitt.

I Take You With Me by Melissa Etheridge: from the 1995 soundtrack to Boys On the Side, a real disappointment of a film, I have to say. It passes the Bechdel Test – 2 women, talking to each other, about something other than men. Good cast: Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore, Mary-Louise Parker – who played a lesbian in Fried Green Toms. But unfortunate in all other respects. LGBTIQ artist

The Party’s Over by Talk Talk. Title track to their 1982 album.

We Got the Beat by The GoGos. Written by the group’s lead guitarist Charlotte Caffey, they recorded the song in 1980 and it was released in July as a single in the UK. The song’s single release brought the Go-Go’s underground credibility in the UK and in US dance clubs. The following year the Go-Go’s re-recorded the song for their debut album Beauty and the Beat – this is from that recording – and released it in January 1982 as the album’s second single. LGBTIQ thanks to Jane Wiedlin, openly bisexual guitarist and songwriter.

The Garden by John Foxx. Title track from his second solo album after leaving Ultravox in the late 1970s; it was released in 1981. He’s a prolific fellow, even released an album this year.

Heaven is a Place On Earth by Belinda Carlisle. 1987 single, Carlisle’s only U.S. chart-topper with or without The Go-Go’s, no. 2 here. From the album Heaven on Earth, her second solo attempt.

Lied by Propaganda. A 1984 track that must’ve been a b-side or non-release. It has become available on a 2002 cd compilation of a number of tracks recorded in 1984 & 1985.

Smile like Heaven by Clan of Xymox. Request.

Le Freak by Chic. 1978 disco release and the band’s third single. the best selling record ever for Atlantic Records company, and the best-selling single ever for Warner Music Group until it was displaced in 1990 (by Madonna’s song “Vogue”).

What I must Do by Devo. From their 1982 album, OH No, It’s Devo, their 5th studio release.

Life in a Northern Town by The Dream Academy. the first single from their 1985 self-titled debut album. The lyrics are references to English singer-songwriter Nick Drake, who suffered from depression and insomnia throughout his life and often reflected those topics in his lyrics. Drake died of an antidepressant overdose in 1974 at the age of twenty six. The first of 2 videos shot for the single was done in Hebden Bridge, a little town in W Yorkshire where I spent a bit of time in 1990-91 when I was bumming around the UK in a £50 Nissan cherry.

Aussies from 1975

*The Love Game by John Paul Young. From his 1975 debut album, Hero, produced by Vanda and Young…of The Easybeats. It hit no. 4 on the ARIA charts in Sept 1975 after a concerted effort on Countdown to turn him from nobody into a star in 2 months…it was an experiment to see if they could do it. Apparently, yes…at least here in Oz.

*From the Inside by Marcia Hines. 1975 single, a cover of Artie Wayne’s tune, just one of 15 covers of it in fact!

*Oh Boy by Diana Trask. 1975 single from this now-forgotten artist. Trask had achieved much success on the country scene in the US throughout the 1960s and 1970s, but it was this song which became her biggest hit and signature tune.

*Glad All Over by Hush. 1975 cover of their own 1974 single release of the song, which was a cover of the 1964 Dave Clark Five track. Hush featured Keith Lamb (vocals), Les Gock (guitar), Rick Lum (bass) and Chris “Smiley” Pailthorpe (drums).

*Wangaratta Wahine by The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band. 1975 performance of this title track from their 2nd album.

*Put another log in the fire by Bill & Boyd. From their 1975 self-titled album. They were a Kiwi pop duo consisting of Bill Cate and Boyd Robertson from the Hutt Valley near Wellington. They were school mates at Wellington’s Naenae College. They moved here in 1964 and continued working for more than a decade.

Go West by The Village People. Request.

Fortune and Fame by Naked Eyes. Track from their 1983 debut album, Burning Bridges. I tried to get the title track but couldn’t find it anywhere.

Devil Went down to Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band. 1979 Grammy winning single from their album, Million Mile Reflections.

Shouldn’t Do That by Kajagoogoo. From the 1985 movie, Santa Claus: The Movie. LGBTI

Together Forever by Rick Astley – the fourth single from Whenever you Need Somebody in 1988, reached #2 in the UK where it was denied the top spot by Kylie’s debut I Should Be So Lucky. The album hit no. 1 in both the UK and here upon release in 1987.

Cry Boy Cry by Blue Zoo. From their 1983 album, 2 by 2, though it came out as a single the year before. It was covered by Bronski Beat which has led some fans to assume Blue Zoo was a gay band as well…but according to the bass player’s daughter, nope, all are hetero.

Lambada by Kaoma. They are a French-Brazilian group still working in Paris and this was their biggest hit. Released in 1989.
