Triple X Show 369 – 8/4/18 – Joan Armatrading/Queen/Alicia Bridges/The Cult/Tubeway Army/Aussies & More

Show 368

The Swords of a Thousand Men by Tenpole Tudor. They are an English punk band fronted by Edward Tudor-Pole. The band first came to prominence when Tudor-Pole appeared in the Sex Pistols’ film The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle. This was one of their fairly well received singles, from 1981.

+The Key by Joan Armatrading. Title track from her 8th studio album, released in 1983.

+Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. I haven’t played it in a while and it’s time.

+Don’t stop me now by Queen. 1979 Request.

Bidi Bidi Bom Bom by Selena. 1994 request.

+Broken Woman by Alicia Bridges. Final track on her self-titled debut album, from 1978. This is the same woman who loves the nightlight, loves to boogie!!  Who’d have thunk it?? She’s been openly lesbian since 1998.

She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult. 1985 track from the album, Love, their second.

Are Friends Electric by Tubeway Army. London new wave band fronted by Gary Numan. This track from 1979 was a number 1 hit for them in the UK, as was the album, Replicas.

Party all the time by Eddie Murphy with Rick James. Written by James for Murphy’s singing debut in 1985.

Sign of the Gypsy Queen by April Wine. From their 1981 album, The Nature of the Beast, their 9th. They were Canadian.

Aussies – P

*Raised on Rock by Doug Parkinson.  1975 single after he’d had a successful career thru the 60s and early 70s in Doug Parkinson In Focus and Vince Melouney’s post-Bee Gees supergroup Fanny Adams, which recorded one album and broke up. He then embarked on a solo career.

*Hold Your Head Up by Party Boys.  Cover of this Argent classic from 1972. It appears on the Boys’ only album, a self-titled affair from 1987.

*Brer Rabbit by Plays with Marionettes. 1982 track from this Melbourne-based band that was active from 1979 till 84. They were Hugo Race, Robin Casinader and Brian McMahon.

*Spent by Pray TV.  1990 single from this Melbourne indie band. They released 4 CD albums, several 7″ vinyl singles and a 12″ vinyl EP between 1987 and 1997.

*Too Much Acid by Pineapples from the Dawn of Time. Brisbane band featuring Michael Gilmore on vocals, Clem Lukey on guitar/vocals, Rod McLeod on bass and teeth and Peter Kroll on lead guitar. This is half of their first release, a double A-sided single with Saha.

*Joy by Toni Pearen. 1995 single from her 1994 album, Intimate. I believe it was her last single before moving to LA. She got her start on an Aussie soap, E Street, and also did a stint on Home and Away. Played the 12” version.

Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club. 1981 single, their second, from husband-and-wife team Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, both also known for being members of Talking Heads. They’re still going today!

At home he’s a Tourist by Gang of Four. Track from their 1979 debut album, Entertainment!

Beautiful World by Devo. Single from their 4th album, New Traditionalists, released in 1981.

Sugar Hiccup by Cocteau Twins. Album version of this 1983 track..the 12 inch is a bit different. It’s from their second studio album, Head over Heals.

Career Opportunities by The Clash. From their 1977 debut album, a self-titled affair.

Ceremony by New Order. Written and recorded first as Joy Division but with the death of Ian Curtis, it was re-recorded as New Order and released as their debut single in 1981. I always forget that New Order had been Joy Division…they seem so happy in comparison to the dour and depressed Joy Division… Though this track is less happy sounding…definitely a transition track.

Change Your Mind by Sharpe & Numan. Jazz musician Bill Sharpe of Shakatak and Gary Numan. This track was originally, in 1985, just a one-off single but it did so well (17th on UK charts) that they released a whole album, Automatic, in 1989 that included this and a bunch of other material.
