In early November, the Style and Spirit Exhibition was opened at the David Roche Gallery to explore the life and design ethos of an important but forgotten style icon while highlighting how HIV stigma contributed to his erasure.

Chester Weinberg was the first fashion designer to die of AIDS related illness in 1985. Despite his importance and the prominence of his work, HIV stigma saw Chester literally written out of history books.

In this episode of WWW, we’ll head to the exhibition’s opening and hear from co-curators Skye Bartlett and Timothy Roberts. We’ll also hear from Ian Hunter MLC, who helped found the South Australian AIDS Action Committee in the mid 1980s.

Ann Maccarrone, Community Engagement and Partnerships Manager at ViiV Healthcare was there and speaks with Jack about the evening.

We also hear from community groups at Picnic in the Park, which is part of Feast Festival, Adelaide’s LGBTIQA+ Arts and Cultural Festival.

Walkern Katatdjin (Rainbow Knowledge) is a national research project that aims to understand and promote the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQA+ young people, and to work with services to develop appropriate interventions.

Shakara Liddelow-Hunt and Tahlia Blow join us to discuss the report and the themes of health, pride, joy, and culture. Peter (Ngaya Ngarigu) is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Educator at Thorne Harbour Health, and joins Michael as guest co-host this episode.

The Walkern Katatdjin project was run by Telethon Kids Institute, Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre (Murdoch University), Edith Cowan University, and the University of Western Australia and is funded by the NHMRC.

This podcast contains information about mental ill health, suicide, and bad experiences young people have had in their life. It’s important to seek help if you’re feeling distressed.

For immediate assistance, please call 000 or go to your closest Emergency Department.

Michael spoke with Natalie Amos from ARCSHS
about Rainbow Realities exploring fresh analyses from surveys such as Private Lives, Writing Themselves – which also included Walkern Katatdjin.

This episode was recorded on the lands of the Yalukut Weelam clan of the Boon Wurrung peoples, Wurundjeri land, and Noongar Whadjuk land. We pay our respects to their elders, past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.

Themme Fatale is an award winning, sideshow-slinging drag artist, known locally and internationally as a genre-blending and gender-transcending performer, producer, and creator with an eye for works that emphasise accessibility and foster riotous Queer joy (with an emphasis on riot). On stage, they serve high skill, high camp circus absurdism and dangerous sideshow stunts –  putting the “sin” in “sincere expression of queer identity”, the “ass” in “class conscious”, and their body on the line for their art.
