It’s almost December 1 – and that means we’re approaching World AIDS Day

Tex and Michael are in the studio chatting with Max Niggl and David O’Keeffe from Living Positive Victoria. It’s new beginnings at LPV as David takes the reigns of the Positive Speakers Bureau – formerly helmed by Max. We’re lucky to be joined by Max to share his 20 years of expertise and lived experience in the role, as well as to share David’s vision moving forward. We discuss what the themes of World AIDS Day mean to both Max and David, and discuss what LPV has planned for the day to celebrate the lives of people living with and lost to HIV.

Michael and Tex chat about what Thorne Harbour Health is up to in the lead up to the day, including our Red Ribbon Street Appeal (tomorrow!) Friday. And we would be remiss if we did not discuss the uniquely Victorian red ribbon and it’s history spanning decades, and continents – born right here in Melbourne.

How do we manage living well with HIV and diabetes?

Michael and Tex sit down with Cynthia Ziebel from Diabetes Victoria to discuss how diabetes affects our communities in Victoria. We look at risk factors, testing, and how to manage diabetes to live well. Later we are joined by HIV activist and friend of the program David Menadue to explore his lived experience as a person living with both HIV and diabetes. We discuss early HIV treatments, balancing treatments, and looking after yourself.

Northside Bizarre is upon us once again

The community fundraiser is, as always, graciously hosted by the Laird Hotel who create an all-inclusive space supporting the David Williams Fund and JOY. Time to PrEP?

New guidelines are set to make getting HIV prevention drugs easier than ever.

In the fight to end HIV transmissions, the new tool on the block is pre-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is an effective way at preventing HIV – yet barriers to folks accessing the drugs abound. However, The new ASHM guidelines for prescribing PrEP medication are aiming to remove barriers and make prescribing it more clear cut.

This week, Michael and Tex chat with Dr. Darren Russell, a Cairns sexual health clinician and Clinical Advisor for the Australasian Society for Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM). Together, we unpack what the new guidelines mean for those accessing and prescribing PrEP.

The theme of World AIDS Day 2018 is “Everybody Counts”. This reminds us that HIV affects everybody and that we must not forget the intersections of minorities within minorities.

In the show leading up to World AIDS Day. Max Niggl, coordinator of the Positive Speakers Bureau from Living Positive Victoria, comes on to talk about stigma & discrimination. Max bravely shares with us his personal experience as a gay man, openly living with HIV. The discussion continues around how we can combat stigma and discrimination both within the community and with the general public.

The much-loved Northside Bizarre has been called ‘a mini-Folsom Street party fundraiser’ for two of Melbourne’s biggest LGBTI community organisations – JOY 94.9 and Thorne Harbour (FKA VAC)‘s David Williams Fund.

Hosted by The Laird, the event has expanded over the years to take over the neighbouring Collingwood Masonic Hall and the section of Henry Street that runs between the two iconic venues.

This all-day event sees over 1500+ attendees come through and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. The event offers an opportunity outside of the typically summer festival season for the LGBTI community to come together while also supporting two of the largest organisations serving the local gender, sex, and sexually diverse community – JOY 94.9 and Thorne Harbour.

Renee and Michael chat to Brett Lasham from the Laird Hotel about the 8th edition of this community street fair – filled with auctions, artisan stalls, performances, and  other kinky creations.
