We speak with volunteers about their experiences with Thorne Harbour Health in Melbourne and SAMESH in South Australia in light of National Volunteer Week.

Since the founding of Thorne Harbour Health in 1983, volunteers have been at the heart of the organisation’s work delivering vital health services.

National Volunteer Week, as well as the LGBTIQ+ Organisations Volunteer Event (LOVE) at the Victorian Pride Centre, are great opportunities to give back and celebrate the incredible work that volunteers do.

Join us this week as we introduce to you a community resource revolution in the making. Yelena Galystan, founder of Tit4Tat comes on the show to have a chat about the inspiration behind this innovative new movement.

Tit4Tat is essentially a community-driven energy exchange portal where a loving community shares their skills, services and resources, in exchange for receiving skills, services and resources – without any monetary exchange.

The concept has already proven to be very successful and you’ll get to hear first hand from Leana, her experience of exchanging services through Tit4Tat.

PrEP on Demand

Most folks familiar with pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) would know it as a daily pill to prevent HIV. Michael chats with some community and clinical experts around a relatively new way to use the power of PrEP around special ‘events’.

First, we talk with Michael Traeger – PhD student at the Burnet Institute who worked on the Victorian PrEPX study. We discuss the PrEP 101’s.

Next, Community advocate and early PrEP adopter Jeff Montgomery speaks from a community perspective about what is happening in the PrEP community. Just how much desire is for this event driven way of taking PrEP?

Dr. Vincent Cornelisse, a sexual health specialist at Kirkton Road Centre in Kings Cross. Before locating to Sydney, Dr. Cornelisse was a PrEP prescribing doctor in Melbourne and also part of the PrEPX clinical study – as well as undertaking his own research into the ways STIs are spread.

Finally, in the lead up to National Volunteers Week – as part of our volunteer spotlight series – I am joined by Thorne Harbour Health volunteer Clayton to talk about his experience volunteering with the organisation.

Admin Block of Fairfield Hospital – closed in 1996.

In this fourth episode of the VAC legacy series, we look at the community response to HIV and AIDS at a time when accessing effective treatment was near impossible and AIDS-related deaths were at an all-time high. How did our community cope at this time in the HIV and AIDS epidemic?

Cal Hawk talks to Bill O’Loughlin, Maureen O’Brien, Bruce Parnell, Sue Stone, David Menadue, Tony Keenan, and Dr. David Bradford about this incredibly difficult time – but also a time of incredible displays of compassion, care, and love. All this in the lead up to VAC’s 35th anniversary next month.

Dr. David Bradford recently published a book about this experience in greater detail — Tell Me I’m Okay.  The book is available to purchase from Monash University Press: http://www.publishing.monash.edu/books/tmio-9781925523331.html

This show, Episode #625 originally aired Thursday 21st June, 2018.

ReThink the Drink is a new project that seeks to inspire alcohol culture change among lesbian, bisexual and queer (LBQ) women in Victorian regional and rural areas. Studies* have shown that some LBQ women enjoy a few too many drinks, enough to cause a hangover (from time to time) and we think it’s time we did something about it. Renee Speaks with Rachel Cook to find out about the campaign and the upcoming LGBTIQ Women’s health conference in July.
