We are sharing everyday stories by Everyday People. This past year, Thorne Harbour has been connecting with our community to showcase the diversity of our multicultural LGBTIQA+ and PLHIV communities, and take a look at the personal narratives of people’s experience with mental health. As people who come from non English speaking backgrounds, we connected to share the impact of migration stress, identity, and their connection to culture as a protective factor when thinking about good mental health – and how they have responded to periods of mental ill health.

This project, Everyday People, has centred the voices of our community first and foremost – sharing their stories in their chosen language, and made available in English also. We’re going to chat to three incredible community members who share their stories of mental health with us. If you’d like to hear their stories in full, head to everyday-people.au – and if you’re looking for ways to improve your own mental health or combat social isolation, check out the resource page for places you can get support that are affirming for you.

Michael spoke with Sasja, Boudie and Emil about their experience sharing their stories.

This episode was recorded on the lands of the Yalukut Weelam clan of the Boon Wurrung peoples, Wurundjeri land, and Noongar Whadjuk land. We pay our respects to their elders, past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.

This episode originally aired Thursday, August15 2024 on JOY.

Jack and Rachel speak with academic, researcher and author Noah Roseman about his book Transgender Australia – A History Since 1910. Drawing on over a hundred oral history interviews and previously unexamined documents and media reports, it highlights how trans people have tried to live authentically while navigating a society that often treated them like outcasts. It is the first book to chart the history of gender diverse Australians, exploring both progress and ongoing battles.

Jacinta and Rachel speak to the inspiring Julie Peters. Even in her 70s, Julie Peters is naïve enough to believe the world can be a better place and has her life trying to make it happen; as a doctoral researcher in public health and anthropology of gender, a teacher, sessional academic, cabaret performer, writer, parliamentary candidate, practical environmentalist and media professional. A strong focus of her work over three decades has been to demythologise and promote social justice and equity for trans and gender diverse individuals with the public, health professionals and across intersectional academic discourses.

Julie takes us on her incredible journey from childhood to transitioning in the seventies to her words of wisdom for young trans people.

Jacinta and Rachel speak to Themme Fatale about their experiences of long COVID and the scientific and social comparisons of HIV and long COVID

Themme Fatale is an award winning, sideshow-slinging drag artist, known locally and internationally as a genre-blending and gender-transcending performer, producer, and creator with an eye for works that emphasise accessibility and foster riotous Queer joy (with an emphasis on riot). On stage, they serve high skill, high camp circus absurdism and dangerous sideshow stunts –  putting the “sin” in “sincere expression of queer identity”, the “ass” in “class conscious”, and their body on the line for their art.
