Life As A Sex Worker

Arts, Health, News & Politics, Society & Culture

In a world where water costs more than petrol, that house prices soar beyond a reasonable possibility, where HECS debts are in the tens of thousands it’s a high possibility that people try to find alternative ways of earning that much needed dollar.

For some, being in the sex industry as a sex worker may not be a choice, but for many it is.

There continues to be a huge stigma associated with sex workers – what they do and why they do it.

The sex industry has a reputation of being dark, dangerous and destructive. There are also issues relating to trafficking, violence, abuse, legislation and the psychological impact on an individual.

Understanding the truth behind the myths and stereotypes of being a sex worker is hard for those who have not had direct experience. How could we possibly understand the decision to be a sex worker, or know what goes on in the industry if we are only basing our knowledge on stereotyped images on the television?

One way to learn more, is to talk to people that know the experience because they have lived it. We talk to two women who share their stories, their experiences in the industry and how they turned those life experiences into a play.
