Today’s guest on Word for Word is Teresa Ma. Teresa is of Chinese descent and emigrated to Australia with her parents and younger sister when she was 9. Teresa realised she didn’t fit the heterosexual label at around age 7, but pushed that aspect of her life aside until well into adulthood due to her strong Catholic beliefs and the fear of upsetting her strict Catholic family. For a while Teresa engaged with a Catholic organisation called Courage which sought to promote celibacy for same sex attracted people, but eventually discovered Acceptance Melbourne which is an organisation committed to supporting LGBTIQ+ Catholics across Victoria. She is the current President of Acceptance Melbourne and works in the drug and alcohol addiction space.

Her decade long career was cut short in 1989 when she was discharged from the Army after a witch-hunt that was carried out for Australian Defence Force members who were seen as gay or lesbian. As a Corps of Signal Yvonne had a topsecret clearance and it was decided by the Army that her sexuality exposed her to bribery and therefore she was deemed a national security risk. Lisa Daniels speaks with Belle Zipper. For many of us being diagnosed with a significant degenerative and incurable medical condition at age 44 would challenge us in ways we’ve never before been challenged. But Belle (Belinda) Zipper had a different experience to most – it became a huge turning point in her life, which saw her finally live true to herself and let free the feelings she had suppressed for her whole life.

As she journeyed through the stages of visits to GPs and neurologists and various medical tests, Belle (who was then known as Ben) had a dream where she was living as a female and the diagnosis became the impetus she needed to start to live life as her true self.

Walkley award winning journalist and author Jo Chandler has filed reports from some of the most challenging places on the planet including sub-Saharan Africa, Antarctica and Afghanistan, yet it was closer to home that her life was most threatened.

In 2011, while on assignment for The Age newspaper, Jo travelled to Daru Island in the Torres Strait.  Located just off the southern coast of Papua New Guinea, Daru is home to approximately 20,000 people and a short ride in a tinny from Australia’s most northern tip of Cape York Peninsula.

Daru is also home to the world’s worst outbreak of drug-resistant tuberculosis – the silent terrorist on Australia’s doorstep and the killing machine that kidnapped Jo Chandler’s health for two years.

In her radio debut, Jo Chandler returned to Daru for ABC Radio National’s Background Briefing.  Her report “Ebola with Wings: the TB crisis on our doorstep” has just been nominated as a finalist for the Australian Museum’s Eureka Prize for Science Journalism.  Congratulations Jo!

logo-monash-ivf1A good day at the office for Dr Gareth Weston must be one of the most rewarding of any jobs – bringing a child into this world for people who otherwise would not be able to have children.

Australia pioneered much of the successes of the IVF process, however, IVF is not an exact science. With so many variables, even if all goes well in the laboratory, much can go wrong in the womb. Often people engaging in IVF have multiple attempts before a successful birth.

But regardless of scientific breakthroughs, no birth occurs without two things – an egg and sperm. It’s the latter essential element that Monash IVF is in desperate need of. Same-sex couples have placed greater demands on this limited resource and there is a shortage of sperm in the sperm bank.

If you are a man between 25 and 45yo you can help bring life into this world and happiness to those who otherwise may be unable to have children. It is hard to think of any gift greater than that.  Click here to find out how easy it is.

Lauren and Stacey are a young lesbian couple who have tried to fall pregnant through IVF a number of times. Now just months before the birth of their son, they join us to share their story and joy. They are currently undergoing treatment at Monash IVF and are also producing a documentary of their journey, to help other couples in the future.

The future of our planet and its people motivates the work of today’s inspirational guest on Word For Word.  At just 30 years of age, Dr Alessandro Demaio trained at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.  He now works for the World Health Organisation as a Medical Officer focusing on the global rise of non-communicable diseases.  He is also the genius behind festival21.

festival21 is an unprecedented, all-day celebration of community, food and future. Taking over The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 11 December, this free event will serve and digest our biggest social challenges through something we love and celebrate – food.

Coinciding with the final day of the United Nations climate talks in Paris, festival21 is not about ‘doom and gloom’. It will be a forward-looking and inspiring event exploring how food and the way we eat can be the key to a sustainable, healthy, future for us – and our planet.

From 12pm to 5pm, a youth-focused day program, f21y, will act as a bootcamp for change makers aged 16-30. With an allstar cast of international and local speakers, entrepreneurs and leaders, it will provide 1000+ young people with the skills, knowledge, connections and confidence to rethink a fairer, healthier and more sustainable future.

From 7pm – 10pm, festival21’s evening flagship will be a massive, open, celebration for 4000+ Victorians. Packed with music, comedy, short-films, keynotes, panel discussions and live social enterprise pitching, we will not just talk and listen – but act and change.

A live exhibition space including indoor vegetable gardens, pop-ups and free masterclasses will run throughout the day.

festival21 supporters include patrons David Prior, Simon McKeon AO, Professor Rob Moodie AM, Professor Kerin O’Dea AO, and media partners The Huffington Post, National Geographic, Broadsheet and The Saturday Paper.

Laureate Professor Peter Doherty

On Word For Word today we put the spotlight on two of Australia’s greatest Scientists and focus on the work conducted at the Doherty Institute which will be hosting the World AIDS Day 2015 activities and events in Melbourne on December 1.

University of Melbourne Laureate Professor Peter Doherty has been involved in research on infection and immunity for 50 years.

He shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 and remains the first person with a veterinary qualification to win a Nobel Prize.

In 1997 he was named Australian of the Year and has been called a National Living Treasure.

Still active in science and involved in large, grant-funded programs at both institutions, he commutes between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and the Doherty Institute (named after him) where he now spends most of his time.  His current focus is increasingly on the public communication of science and on defending an evidence-based view of the world.

Professor Sharon LewinProfessor Sharon Lewin is the inaugural Director of the Doherty Institute. She leads a large multi-disciplinary research team that focuses on understanding why HIV persists on treatment and developing clinical trials aimed at ultimately finding a cure for HIV infection and understanding how HIV interacts with other common co-infections, including hepatitis B virus (HBV).

Sharon was previously Head, Department of Infectious Diseases, the Alfred Hospital and Monash University (2003 – 2014) and Co-head, Centre for Biomedical Research, Burnet Institute (2010-2014).

Sharon was the local co-chair of the XX International AIDS Conference (AIDS2014) held in Melbourne in July 2014, which was the largest health and development conference ever hosted in Australia.

In 2014, she was named Melburnian of the Year – an annual award from the City of Melbourne to an inspirational role model who has made an outstanding contribution to the city in their chosen field.

Episode 04Modern Families and The Law is a four part radio series that explores some of the legal difficulties and complexities faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people when interacting with the laws of the land.

Australia, like the UK and USA is witnessing exponential growth in trans children “coming out” and parents are recognising the signs of gender dysphoria within their children and seeking medical help.

Victoria’s Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Clinic is pretty unique and does some extraordinary work for the lives of young people who are struggling in the body they were born in.

Demand for the Gender Clinic’s services is in such demand that the Victorian Government recently announced an injection of $6 million over four years to provide improved care to transgender children.

In this fourth and final episode of Modern Families and The Law we hear from Jane, the mother of Christian, a 15yo Trans guy.

JOY 94.9’s Megan Smith speaks with Dr Michelle Telfer, Clinical Lead at the RCH Centre for Adolescent Health following the multi million announcement by Victoria’s Minister Equality and Minister for Mental Health, Martin Foley.

And Sally Nicholes from Nicholes Family Lawyers joins Dean Beck to explain some of the legal necessities for young people transitioning.

Surrogacy is increasingly being used by Gay men to have their children however with altruistic surrogacy as the only legal option in Australia, going off shore for a commercial arrangement is increasingly occurring.

Moral and ethical issues aside, overseas surrogacy presents a vast array of legal issues, including but not limited to adoption laws and immigration upon return to Australia.

For Australian lesbian couples wishing to have children, IVF is the most sort-after option.

DSC_0062Associate Professor Steve Macfarlane is Director of Aged Psychiatry, Caulfield Hospital (Alfred Health) & Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Monash University.  He joins Dean to discuss the debilitating condition Alzheimer’s disease.

Steve is heading a world first trial to which hopes to further the treatment options for the most common form of dementia.

Unlike current medications, Anavex is unique because it is designed to both relieve sufferers’ symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Results of the trial could be known within a year and, if positive, will pave the way for a larger clinical trial.

To be eligible for the study, patients should have early-stage Alzheimer’s and be on the cognitive enhancer, Aricept. Questions about trial participation can be directed to Michael Kornhauser, Caulfield Hospital Age Psychiatry clinical trials coordinator, on (03) 9076 6110 or via email adclinicaltrials@cgmc.org.au

book-1As a rule, we expect a lot from our General Practitioners.  Years of University coupled with the ability to save lives has earnt Doctors a great deal of respect and a high position upon society’s pedestal.

With that comes an expectation that they know what they are doing and do it competently.   Ever increasing bureaucratic demands coupled with increasing caseloads and the threat of litigation if something goes wrong, means many Doctors have or are experiencing depression and burnout.

It is no surprise then to discover that rates of suicide and poor mental health is far greater among Doctors than in the general population.

Internationally bestselling author of “Remedy For Burnout”, Starla Fitch MD is passionate about helping those in the medical field who are suffering from physician burnout. What started as an online community to help physicians remember why they went into medicine in the first place is now a place for physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals, and patients to connect and return some humanity to the healthcare system.
