GERMANY: THE FAST LANE TO MARRIAGE EQUALITY

Another country has joined the ever-growing list of western nations legalising marriage equality.  But for this world superpower, it all seemed to happen in the space on a week – leaving us in Australia asking why the same thing can’t happen here!  That country is Germany who passed their marriage equality bill this week.

• Was the parliamentary vote for same-sex marriage really as much of a surprise at it seemed?
• Does it matter that Germany’s leader voted against the bill?
• What does this significant change mean for LGBTI rights in the rest of Europe?

To share with us the celebration of marriage equality in Germany, we were joined by Evelyne Paradis, the Executive Director of ILGA Europe (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association – www.ilga-europe.org) based in Brussels.
