UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: DEPORTED FOR BEING TOO FEMININE

Africa and the Middle East, News & Politics

News has filtered out that in August, two Singaporeans visiting the United Arab Emirates were arrested, jailed and deported.  Their crime was “for attempting to resemble women”.  This bizarre case has laid bare loose interpretations of UAE laws that appear to target LGBTI people.
  • Under what law have these visiting internationals been charged?
  • What makes someone “too feminine” in this Middle Eastern society?
  • What does it mean for LGBTI people working or visiting the United Arab Emirates?
To shine a light on this strange UAE law and its even stranger interpretation, we spoke to Ahmed Benchemsi, the Advocacy Director for Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org) in the Middle East and North Africa.
