INDONESIA: ESCAPE FOR INTERNATIONAL LGBT STUDENTS – September 19

Asia/Pacific

If we mention the word “Indonesia”, many Australians will instantly think white sandy beaches, swim-up bars and very welcoming locals.  But one of our closest and largest neighbours seems to have a problem with gay people.  In the past 18 months there has been a marked increase in the visibility of homophobia – including from very prominent community leaders in government and religion.

  • What is it like growing up in a country where homosexuality is culturally unacceptable?
  • Is it possible to reconcile you Muslim religious upbringing with your sexuality?
  • How do dreams and reality differ when you decide to leave your home country and come to Australia as an international student?

To share his personal journey with all its triumphs and challenges, we were joined in the studio by Zen Andra, Project Officer for Rainbow International Students Network.
