FIJI: LEARNING FROM DISASTER RESPONSE FOR THE LGBTI COMMUNITY

Asia/Pacific, News & Politics

Cyclone Gita has devastated the Pacific peace with thousands of people in Tonga and Samoa left without homes. So there is no more appropriate time to be talking about disasters and the humanitarian response from an LGBTI perspective, particularly in Fiji.

  • How is the experience of an LGBTI person different to the general population after a disaster?
  • What role do informal networks play in rebuilding lives and communities?
  • How can storytelling bring about changes within disaster response organisations and governments?

To share the deeply personal stories of Fijians, tonight we are joined by Emily Dwyer and Lana Woolf from Edge Effect (www.edgeeffect.org).  They authored the report Down By The River – Addressing the Rights, Needs and Strengths of Fijian Sexual and Gender Minorities in Disaster Risk Reduction and Humanitarian Response for Oxfam Pacific (www.oxfam.org.au).

Broadcast: 20 February, 2018
