ASIA: Speaking up about the challenges of being Gaysian

Asia/Pacific, News & Politics

Leaving all the supports and familiarities of your home country to go to a new one is hard enough. But when you add being a sexual minority to being an ethnic minority, the challenges start to multiply. And for many years, being gay and Asian has attracted a particularly hurtful sexual racism from within the LGBT community.  This show explores gay Asian Australians.

  • Is the term “Gaysian” one of affection or offence?
  • How do we go about beating sexual racism?
  • What can we learn from Melbourne’s gay Asian community?

Circling the chairs to discuss all things Asian, we were joined in the studio by Azlan and James from the must-see Midsumma show – Queer Asians Anonymous (https://midsumma.org.au/program/qaa19)

Broadcast: January 22, 2019
