Yemen: Fleeing Death to Imprisonment

Rasha YounesFor the first time in more than eight years of World Wide Wave that we have been able to bring you a queer story from Yemen. It has taken several months for this story of Mohamad al-Bokari to come to light. He fled his home country of Yemen under fear of death due to his perceived sexuality – only to be arrested without charge and tortured in Saudi Arabia. His crime? Posting a video on social media that dared to say that everyone has rights, including gay people.

Human Rights Watch have used their network of Non-Government Organisations in the Middle East to find out about the current state of Mohamad al-Bokari. And the news is not good. Rasha Younes is with Human Rights Watch based in Beirut and provided us an insight into this story.
