Serbia: Lesbian PM No Guarantee of Changes

ERASerbia has had a shady history with LGBTI rights showing moments of hope clouded by the pain of homophobia and attacks. But surprisingly in 2017, a lesbian became Prime Minister of Serbia – and she was re-elected this month. As Serbia pushes for entry to the European Union, we find out what is changing for the LGBTI community or if it is all just for looks.

Jelena Vasiljević is the Capacity Development Manager for E.R.A. – LGBTI Equal Rights Association. For over 15 years, Jelena has been dedicated to working on improving the position of LGBTI community with special focus on addressing lesbian and feminist issues. From her current and former role with Labris – the Lesbian Human Rights Organization in Serbia, she brings us some unique insights.
