Middle East: queer life in the gulf states

In the Gulf States, penalties for queer acts can include imprisonment, deportation, torture and even death. Yet the region is dominated by migrants, including queer migrants, who make a deliberate decision to move there.

One such migrant is telling their stories, including where queer people are not just surviving, but thriving. Gaar Adams is the author of a recently released book titled, ‘Guest privileges, queer lives and finding home in the Middle East’.

Global: ILGA World’s new report on LGBTQIA+ rights

It’s Pride Month in the northern hemisphere. For many it’s party time, but for others there are still protests and a fight for visibility. Ahead of Pride Month, ILGA World launches a major new report, ‘Laws on us: a global overview of legal progress and backtracking on sexual orientation, gender identy, gender expresision and sex characteristics’, documenting legal developments affecting LGBTQIA+ people in 193 UN member states since January 2023. The report highlights the positive legal changes as well as the backsteps in LGBTQIA+ rights, including some alarming trends. Dhia Rezki is lead coauthor and joins us to discuss the findings.

China: transgender histories from late imperial China

The term ‘transgender’ is a modern concept. Only in the last thirty years or so has it gained wide-ranging acceptance, but this is where the name and the lived reality part ways. Transgender people by different names have been around for all time, including in imperial China.
Matthew Sommer is a professor of history at Stanford University and has scoured court records in China to uncover trans-people who, despite the hardships for many, were able to find a place in Chinese society. He details their stories in his new book, ‘The Fox Spirit, The Stone Maiden and Other Transgender Histories From Late Imperial China’,

One person who is fascinated by the changes and what it means for the queer community is Amin Ghaziani, professor of sociology at the University of British Columbia and author of a new book, ‘Long live queer nightlife: how the closing of gay bars sparked a revolution’.

Egypt: religion and discrimination against queer people

Many queer people struggle to reconcile their religion with their sexuality. There just aren’t many accepting and inclusive religions. Queer Muslims are no exception. In Egypt, even though there is no explicit law against same-sex sexual acts, there are widespread reports of discrimination and even violence against LGBTQIA+ people.
Abdurahman Katamish is an Egyptian-born LGBT advocate, who moved to Melbourne seeking a more inclusive environment. In Egypt, he cofounded an underground organization to support queer individuals, despite the cultural stigmas.

Georgia: proposed bill threatens the country’s LGBTQIA+ community

The former Soviet country of Georgia has seen many challenges for the LGBTQIA+ community since the USSR collapsed in 1991. Homophobic politicians, pride march bans and violence.
Now the current ruling party is proposing a bill that could see bans on changing gender, same sex couples from adopting children, and the barring of public celebrations of same-sex relationships. But is this a serious threat, or a preelection storm in a tea cup?
Giorgi Tabagari is the former executive director of Tbilisi Pride. With his long-standing history of activism for LGBTQIA+ rights and visibility in Georgia, he gives us an insight on the impact of the proposed bill and the threat to the LGBTQIA+ community in Georgia.

Eurovision and the politics of the Israel-Palestine war

With Eurovison, one thing is for certain, every year there will be controversy to some degree. This year the argument is over Israel. Elias Jahshan has been working for many years to give queer Arabs a voice. He has collected eighteen stories from queer Arabs in his new book, This Arab is Queer. The current war between Israel and Palestine has collided with Eurovision, leaving some to call for a boycott of Israel. Jahshan gives his perspective on this.

Ghana: Global pressure to halt harsh anti-gay laws

The west African country of Ghana has passed some of the harshest anti-LGBT laws. The country now imposes gaol terms for anyone identifying as LGBTQ, anyone who participates in LGBTQ groups and members of the public who fail to report anyone who they think is LGBTQ. The only thing stopping these laws is the country’s president. This has triggered an internation push to pressure the president to veto the laws, but so far there’s no sign either way of the president’s next move. Ohotuowo Ogbeche, from global advocacy group Outright International, has conducted research on the impact of Ghana’s anti-LGBT bill.

Russia: LGBT support in exile

The mysterious disappearance this week of the leading opposition voice inside Russia is not a surprise to many. Alexei Navalny was an outspoken lawyer, crusading against corruption and dictators. It shows a ruthlessness in dealing with any potential threats inside Russia.

For the LGBT community, there has been an exodus from Russia. The fear the outcomes of Russia’s expanding anti-LGBT propaganda laws, which effectively ban any public mention of same-sex relations, and the demonstrated ruthlessness of the government in dealing with any perceived opposition, mean that leaving is an act of survival. USA: Seeking Full Equality in Florida

The U.S. state of Florida is home to two politicians who have made a sport out of anti-LGBT rhetoric – former President Donald Trump and current Governor Ron DeSantis. The latter has signed into law the “Don’t Say Gay” bill banning teaching of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression in schools. But that is just the start. There are a raft of other bills attacking the LGBTIQ community passed or being proposed.

And the people of Florida seemingly approve. Governor DeSantis was elected with a greatly increased majority at the last election. But there are voices speaking against these changes. Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s LGBTQ community. Brandon Wolf, Equality Florida Press Secretary joins us to discuss what is going on in Florida.

The Amplification of Hate

A wave of anti-LGBT hate is sweeping across formerly safe western countries – from the UK to Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The amplification of hate across multiple platforms – from blogs to mainstream media or social media – gives it a global audience. Many of the origins appear to be in America. But is it fair to point the finger or has social media just given a platform to a problem that has long been present?

This extremism has been driven by a mix of religion, nationalism, technology, commercialisation of news and sexual politics. Dr Justin Ellis – Senior Lecturer in Criminology at The University of Newcastle - has examined the growth of far-right opposition to LGBTIQ expression in Australia and the US in his research titled: Representation, Resistance and the Digiqueer: Fighting for Recognition in Technocratic Times.

For our guest tonight, each day started wondering if they would be attacked, imprisoned or even murdered. Each day was a test of survival.

From Uganda to a refugee camp in Kenya and now to a new home in Australia, in this podcast we hear an intensely personal story of Robert Kasozi. Kyiv Pride at Eurovision Time

Ukraine remains in the grips of war. Lives and livelihoods have been lost, homes destroyed and life’s simple pleasures have been replaced by a daily fight for survival.

And the LGBT community is not immune. While some party in Liverpool in the UK, members of Ukraine’s rainbow community have gone to fight or flee to safety. Progress on LGBT rights in Ukraine is on hold. World Athletics Versus Trans and Intersex Athletes

The world of sport has long had an uncomfortable relationship with Trans and Intersex athletes. This continued last week with World Athletics changing its eligibility rules to exclude any female athlete that had gone through male puberty. It also effectively forces unnecessary medical interventions that could cause harm to athletes.

There is no scientific consensus that Trans women have an unfair advantage in sport. Human Rights Watch, who have been campaigning against these types of policies at the elite level for some time, say the policy is built on stereotypes. Their senior researcher, Kyle Knight, joins us in this podcast.

Ever since the AIDS epidemic, it has been understood that the LGBTIQ community has special health needs. Whether it relates to sexual health, mental health or the response to pandemics, the rainbow community has its own way of interrogating and improving health outcomes.

One person who has made the study of LGBTIQ health their life work is Tonda Hughes – Professor at Columbia University and founder of the Centre for Sexual and Gender Minority Health Research. It is the first and only centre of its type to look at health from the perspective of Nursing.

There is no doubt that there is a global attack on Trans people with anti-Trans laws and rhetoric continuing to grow. And if there is a front line, perhaps it is the US state of Texas. Whether it is a bill to remove gender affirming care or political directives to investigate parents for child abuse if they supported their Trans child with transitioning, the Texas parliament is on the attack.

Despite this, our guest in this podcast insists that most Texans are accepting and progress has been made in LGBTIQ rights. But rights won can be rights lost. So Johnathan Gooch is part of the team at Equality Texas fighting against a cavalcade of anti-LGBT laws.

Hungary: Anti-Transgender Laws

After following Russia, by introducing an anti-gay propaganda law, Hungary is again drawing the ire of the international community. Last year, Hungary’s parliament passed a law making it impossible for transgender or intersex people to legally change their gender. And earlier this month, the country’s Constitutional Court backflipped to back the law.

To find out what the passage of these anti-trans laws means in Hungary and how the LGBTIQ community is responding, we are joined by Luca Dudits, Executive Board member and communications officer at The Hatter Society – Hungary’s oldest LGBTIQ advocacy organisation.

Indonesia: New Criminal Code Impacts LGBT Community

It’s been called an assault on religious minorities, women and LGBT people. A worrying step back for democracy and human rights. And a crackdown on dissent. There are very few, if any, people speaking out in support of the Indonesia’s new criminal code. Yet it passed parliament with the support of almost all political parties.

Russia: The Impact of Anti-LGBT Propaganda Laws

There has been an exodus from Russia. Many young men fled the country when conscription for the Ukraine war was announced. But even before that, the LGBT community was on the move fearing the outcomes of Russia’s expanded anti-LGBT propaganda laws. It effectively outlaws any public mention of same-sex relations.

Under the laws, individuals and organisations can receive significant fines for any promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations”. Groups like Coming Out SPB had to leave Russia and set up in friendlier European countries, still determined to continue their work. In this podcast we speak to the Executive Director in exile of Coming Out SPB, Aleksandr Voronov.

Scotland: Exploring Trans Rights Issues

Celebrating LGBTQ+ History

Stonewall is synonymous with queer history. In Australia, the Mardi Gras protest was a seminal point in our history. UK World War Two code-breaker Alan Turing became an LGBT icon after his death. AIDS and its impacts cannot be forgotten. With so many people keeping their sexuality in the past, queer history is only now beginning to be explored, captured and shared.

History is written by those who follow but it can have a powerful message about our future. One person that knows this better than most is the Founder of LGBTQ+ History Month USA – Rodney Wilson. Rodney has recently co-Founded the International Committee on LGBTQ+ History Months to grow and share our knowledge of our queer past.

The FIFA World Cup is soccer’s greatest tournament. It is the Olympics of the football world. Right now, for the first time, the tournament is being held in the Arab world. But rather than celebration, from the very first announcement of Qatar as the host country, the event has been shrouded in controversy.

But the efforts of the Qatari government to paint a rosy picture of their country has been overshadowed. Human rights complaints, labour abuses and a horrific record on LGBT rights have all been stories the government would rather the world did not see. The first Qatari to declare himself openly gay via the media is one of those determined to raise the issue of Qatar’s shocking LGBT record. That man – Dr. Nasser Mohamed, or Nas as he prefers to be called – tells his story in this World Wide Wave podcast.

Iraq: Everyone Wants Me Dead

It’s hard to think of a worse place in the world to be queer than Iraq. Aside from the criminalisation of homosexuality and the death penalty under Sharia laws, LGBT people have to deal with violence in the family, armed vigilantes enforcing so-called morality laws and discrimination from a society that doesn’t understand them – and doesn’t want to.

Human Rights Watch in partnership with IraQueer have documented stories from LGBT people in Iraq. In a challenging read, they have produced the report – Everyone Wants Me Dead: Killings, Abductions, Torture, and Sexual Violence against LGBT People by Armed Groups in Iraq. In this podcast we hear from report author Rasha Younes from Human Rights Watch and brave activist Amir Ashour from IraQueer.

South-East Asia: Experiences of LGBTI Migrant Workers

Among the 5.1 million migrant workers who are employed in South East Asia, little is still known about the motivations or experiences of migrant workers with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions. Even less information is available on the discrimination, violence and harassment that they may experience in the world of work.

It inspired the International Labour Organization, in partnership with UN Women, to commission a study, titled: A Very Beautiful But Heavy Jacket: The Experiences of Migrant Workers With Diverse Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression in South-East Asia. Emily Dwyer, Director at Edge Effect, was the lead author of the report and joins us tonight.

Norway: Horror on Oslo Pride Day

In the early hours of the morning before Norway’s Pride celebrations in Oslo, a lone gunman took to the streets of the capital and shot at random. The attack occurred in central Oslo’s packed nightlife district, including iconic gay bar The London Pub. The attack lasted only minutes but left two members of the LGBTIQ community dead and more than 20 other people injured.

Pride events were cancelled nationally at the request of police while they investigated if other attacks could follow. Fortunately they did not. However this did not prevent thousands of Norwegians taking to the streets in a march of solidarity. In the middle of the confusion were the organisers of Oslo Pride.

Larss Arnesen, Vice Chair of Oslo Pride, joined us to explain what happened then and since.

Singapore: Contentious Law to be Repealed

It’s about time! On Sunday night, Singapore’s Prime Minister made an announcement that the government will repeal the colonial era law that bans consensual sex between men – the gross indecency laws. The news was celebrated locally and applauded internationally. But there’s a catch that has some in the LGBT community concerned and angry.

It has been a hard fought victory with years of court challenges, political advocacy and Pink Dot protests. We reached out to a great friend of the show to see how this announcement was received and what it all means going forward. Fiji: Training for Media on LGBTQI Issues

Like it or not, the media has incredible power. The power to amplify an issue or to silence one. The power to rally people behind a cause or fight against one. With that power comes great responsibility – the obligation to be fearless, factual and fair. But when it comes to LGBTIQ issues, that is not always the reality.

One country that is tackling head-on the way LGBTIQ people are seen in the media is Fiji. They have recently run a training and engagement workshop with journalists organised by the Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network. Their CEO, Isikeli Vulavou, joined us to explain how it went.

Antigua and Barbuda: Repeal of Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws

A very big court ruling happened in last week but you may have missed it. The High Court in the former British colony of Antigua and Barbuda struck down the colonial-era sodomy laws – including up to 15 year prison sentence that came with convictions. What makes this case even more interesting was the role the government played in the final decision.

Not only will we learn more about the country and what life is like for LGBT people, we will also uncover how significant this court ruling is – not just for Antigua and Barbuda, but also for the rest of the Caribbean. Joining us in this World Wide Wave podcast is Kenita Placide, the Executive Director of the Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality.

Pride Around the World

Whilst LGBT pride happens 365 days a year, there is a big focus in June in northern hemisphere countries. Pride began as a movement with a protest – the famed Stonewall riots in New York City – in response to police intimidation of the community. Back then, Pride had a very clear purpose. It was a protest. But amidst all the parties and parades of today, has Pride lost its purpose?

International LGBT advocacy organisation – Outright Action International – hosted a forum in “Pride month” about Pride around the world. Joining Neela Ghoshal, the Senior Director of Law and Policy at Outright was:

Juma Wasili from Nyasa Rainbow Alliance in Malawi;
Alexus D’Marco, the Executive Director of the United Caribbean Trans Network; and
Viktorija Kolbesnikova from Vilnius Queer Festival in Lithuania.

South East Asia: Advancing the Rights of LGBTIQ People

With news from Thailand that marriage equality could shortly be a reality, you might think there is cause for hope for rainbow rights in the region. But with anti-gay sentiment sweeping Indonesia and Brunei labelled the most unsafe country in the world for queer people, it is clear that LGBTQIA rights in South East Asia are a complex web.

But some recent regional reforms might help local activists to advocate for changes in their country. Anthony Langlois an Associate Professor in International Relations at Flinders University. Anthony is an expert in queer rights in the region and joined us to give an update on South East Asia. For further discussion on this topic, Anthony has published an article Advancing the Rights of LGBTIQ People in Southeast Asia and book Sexuality and Gender Diversity Rights in Southeast Asia.

Middle East: This Arab is Queer

The most frequent narrative of queer people in the Middle East is one of being persecuted by government and religion. Being ostracised by society and rejected by families. There is truth to these stories, but there are also other stories to be told.

Elias Jahshan was determined to give Arabs the space to tell their stories on their terms. He has collected eighteen stories of queer Arabs in his book, This Arab is Queer. From living incognito in Saudi Arabia, waving the rainbow flag in Cairo or making a new start as an Arab immigrant in a new country, each rich and varied story of queer experiences and identities is from the heart.

Sexual Racism Within our Community

This week is the 6th anniversary of the horrific Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Florida. It was an attack that left 49 members of the LGBTI community dead, with most also part of the Latin-X community. We remember them.

It is within that shadow that we tonight discuss the dark side of racism – but this time, within our own community.

The LGBTQIA+ community is a diverse mix but not always a cohesive mix. Numerous studies and countless personal experiences have demonstrated sexual racism inside our community. Discussing sexual racism against Asian gay men, tonight we are joined by Dr Gene Lim from Monash University and the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at La Trobe University.

USA: The Happenings Around LGBTQ Rights in the Courts and Parliaments

The election of Joe Biden over Donald Trump as US President was supposed to see a change in the way politics was done – towards a less divided United States. The LGBTIQ community especially was looking for change. So a little over a year since President Biden’s inauguration, where are we now? Already this year, more than 300 anti-LGBTQ Bills have been proposed across America – most targeting the Trans community.

Also lurking are rumours of a profound change of views of the powerful US Supreme Court – a change that could lead to the reversal of LGBTQ rights like marriage equality.

To understand what is happening in the courts and parliaments of America, we will shortly be joined in the studio by Professor Paula Gerber from the Law Faculty of Monash University and Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation.

There are many identifiable sub-groups within the rainbow community – from lipstick lesbians to twinks or leather men, diversity is generally embraced. And when you do find your tribe, it can be a life-changing moment. One group that rarely needs a descriptive introduction are the Bears. But what do we really know about Bear culture?

Taking us into the world of Bears – including an intriguing right of passage that seems to have become a kind of “coming out” as a Bear – our guest tonight is Dr Nick Mcglynn from the University of Brighton in the UK. He authored the research report: BearSpace: Experiences Of Fat GBQ Men In Spaces Of The UK’s Bear Community.
