Taiwan: Hotline volunteers educate teachers

LGBT organisation: Tongzhi Hotline Association

  • Tonghzi Hotline Association is the oldest LGBT organisation in Taiwan.
  • In March 1998, a news report regarding a gay adolescent committing suicide inspired four different organisations to establish a permanent organization.
  • Services include human rights advocacy, assistance for seniors, HIV/AIDS testing and education.
  • Gender and queer education.

W3JOY interviewed Jennifer Hsin-Chieh, a Tongzhi Hotline Association currently residing in Sydney

Taiwan has a law about gender education. Everyone from primary students to college students has to have four hours of classes every semester.

 

Last year we had more than 600 teachers in two workshops a day.

 

Acceptance is pretty different between the urban and rural areas…I come from Taipei, where I had lots of resources….coming out in small towns is very, very difficult.

 

The media creates gay [stereotypes of] drinking all the time, party animals.

 

In Asian culture, coming out to parents is the biggest issue.

 

For parents…we empower them to create their own support groups…For teachers, we have [workshops] to create formal knowledge for them.
