For this program, Rob and Mossy have chosen two seminal years in their lives. They discuss what happened back then and some of the songs that were trending. 1964 was a huge year for The Beatles. They toured Australia and secured the top six spots in Australia’s yearly chart. I Feel Fine was one of those songs and they also featured in 1969 with Get Back. The opening song for 1964 was the unusual The Girl from Ipanema performed by renowned saxophonist Stan Getz and American-Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto. Other big hits in 1964 were Barbra Streisand with People from the film Funny Girl and Dionne Warwick’s version of Anyone Who Had A Heart. 1969 saw Spiral Starecase soaring with their one hit wonder More Today Than Yesterday and Mama Cass with her solo hit It’s Getting Better. Australia was represented in 1964 by Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs’ popular cover Poison Ivy and in 1969 Ronnie Burns with Age of Consent.

There are many songs featuring different royal figures such as kings, queens, princesses, dukes, earls and lords, and ladies. The Royal Guardsmen mined a rich field when they sang about Snoopy, the dog from the famous Peanuts cartoon. Snoopy vs. The Red Baron hit the high spot in the charts in the early sixties. A rare royal is mentioned in Dire Strait’s Sultans of Swing while ABBA’s Dancing Queen and Juice Newton’s Queen Of Hearts draw inspiration from a royal female. Of interest is our own The Easybeats version of an old Chuck Berry song Little Queenie.  Teen idol James Darren sings his cynical hit Her Royal Majesty and you will recognise the opening of Gene Chandler’s Duke Of Earl later used in a well known advertising jingle.

Dion Di Mucci had many big hits in the 50s and 60s none bigger than his smash hit Runaround Sue. Some singers preferred romantic ballads such as Gennaro Louis Vitiliano (Jerry Vale) with You Don’t Know Me or Al Martino with I Love You Because. Teen idols Walden Robert Cassotto (Bobby Darin) and Robert Ridarelli (Bobby Rydell) are represented with Dream Lover and Sway. Two prominent female singers with Italian heritage were Rosemary Victoria Yuro (Timi Yuro) with her tearjerker Hurt and top female singer Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero (Connie Francis) with one of her big hits Stupid Cupid. The Italian flavour is enhanced by three songs sung in Italian: Save Your Love from Renee & Renato; Te Amo from Umberto Tozzi and Felicita Al Bano & Romina Power.

In this program Rob is joined by Rachel, longtime listener and friend. Rachel has selected songs which mean something to her or simply appeal to her. At a young age she was enthralled and influenced by the young Lesley Gore’s hit You Don’t Own Me. Rachel from Russell Morris also invoked memories of the Vietnam War and her father. The Vietnam War also provided a backdrop for Normie Rowe’s Maybe Tomorrow. Strong voices marked Rob’s choices: the mellifluous contralto of Karen Carpenter (Solitaire), Bob Lind’s poetic Elusive Butterfly and teen idol, Bobby Vinton with the pretty Blue On Blue. Rachel’s French connection is expressed through Piaf’s iconic Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien.

Playlist:

  • Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress) – The Hollies
  • Always On My Mind – Pet Shop Boys
  • Perfect Day – Lou Reed
  • You Don’t Own Me – Lesley Gore

For our first program of 2025, we are going further back in time and presenting old songs that were given a new arrangement later on. The tone is set by Nina Simone’s classy My Baby Just Cares For Me. Others keep the tone of the original such as The Lettermen with the Way You Look Tonight and Art Garfunkel’s lush arrangement of I Only Have Eyes For You. But other performers sing up tempo versions of old songs like Bobby Rydell’s inimitable style on That Old Black Magic and Ricky Nelson’s version of the Gershwin classic Summertime. Bobby Darin rocks out You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby while ex Aussie Frank Ifield sings his big hit I Remember You.

This episode features songs about loneliness and being alone.

Songwriters like to write about emotions. One popular theme is to write about loneliness or being alone. Irish singer Gilbert O’Sullivan starts off this week’s program with his poignant Alone Again (Naturally). The Bee Gees follow with a rather anguished Lonely Days. Legendary singer Roy Orbison reminds us of his fine voice with his first hit Only The Lonely. Another sublime voice is Karen Carpenter’s as she gives a knockout performance on the Neil Sedaka song Solitaire. Other songs are Neil Diamond’s Solitary Man and Linda Ronstadt’s fine rendition of Blue Bayou. But one of the greatest songs ever written about loneliness is Eleanor Rigby from The Beatles.

In this program we’ve avoided any songs concerned with love or loving relationships.

The program starts with the rather outrageous Arthur Brown, nicknamed ‘The God Of Hellfire’ with his band and their best seller ‘Fire.’ This is followed by The Village People’s catchy ‘You Can’t Stop The Music’.

The antithesis of love can be found in Barry McGuire’s prescient, nihilistic Eve Of Destruction while an audience favourite is the quirky You’re Moving  Out Today performed by Carole Bayer Sager.

The Australian contribution comes from Do Re Mi’s Man Overboard  and Jigsaw’s Yellow River.

This week we celebrate the thirteenth birthday of Yesterday Once More. We’ve called our theme ‘Anything Goes’ because we are being self indulgent and playing our own song choices.

Mossy has chosen some songs that mean something to her such as Tee Set’s MA Belle Ami , Della Reese’s More, and Stevie Wonder’s Overjoyed.

Rob shows his penchant for big ballads featuring Nazareth’s Love Hurts and Paul Anka’s (All Of A Sudden) My Heart Sings. Also included is Bette Midler’s knockout version of the Carpenter’s hit Superstar.

Playlist

  • Love Hurts – Nazareth
  • Ma Belle Ami – Tee Set
  • You’ve Got Your Troubles – The Fortunes
  • Come And Get It – Badfinger
  • Superstar – Bette Midler
  • More – Della Reese

  • Overjoyed – Stevie Wonder
  • Garden Of Eden – Joe Valino
  • With A Little Help From My Friends – Beatles
  • Baby It’s You – The Shirelles

Many songs start off with one name but on release have another name.

Thunderclap Newman’s ‘Something In The Air’ was originally called ‘Revolution’ but because of The Beatle’s song with the same name it was changed.

The original name for Cher’s ‘Gypsies Tramps And Thieves’ included the words ‘White Trash’ so was considered unsuitable.

The Fleetwood’s 1959 hit ‘Come Softly To Me’ was amended from ‘Come Softly’ the latter being considered too risque.

Perhaps the most unusual and amusing song changes were to The Beatle’s ‘Yesterday’ (originally ‘Scrambled Eggs’) and Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’ with the working title of ‘Stupid’.

PLAYLIST
  • Something In The Air – Thunderclap Newman
  • Take On Me – A Hah
  • Sunshine Superman – Donovan
  • Spanish Eyes – Al Martino
  • Year Of The Cat – Al Stewart
  • Killing Me Softly – Roberta Flack
  • Voulez Vous – ABBA
  • Life In A Northern Town – Dream Academy
  • Gypsies Tramps And Thieves – Cher
  • Come Softly To Me – The Fleetwoods
  • Yesterday – The Beatles
  • Crazy – Patsy Cline
