Rosemary Clooney born May 23, 1928 was an American singer and actress. She came to prominence in the early 1950s with the song Come On-a My House, which was followed by other pop numbers such as Mambo Italiano / Tenderly / Half as Much / Hey There / This Ole House/ Sway. She also had success as a jazz vocalist. Clooney’s career languished in the 1960s but revived in 1977, when her White Christmas co-star Bing Crosby asked her to appear with him at a show marking his 50th anniversary in show business. She continued recording until her death in 2002.

The Dave Clark Five (DC5) formed in 1958 in Tottenham, London. Drummer Dave Clark served as the group’s leader, producer and co-songwriter. In January 1964 they had their first UK top ten single, Glad All Over, which knocked the Beatles’ I Want to Hold Your Hand off the top of the UK Singles Chart. Although this was their only UK # 1, they topped the US chart in December 1965, with their cover of Bobby Day’s Over and Over. Their other UK top 10 hits include Bits and Pieces / Can’t You See That She’s Mine / Catch Us If You Can / Everybody Knows /The Red Balloon / Good Old Rock ‘n’ Roll  and a version of Chet Powers‘ Get Together.

The sixties was a decade of turbulent social and political upheaval and it’s not surprising that many of today’s songs reflect that fact. Three songs have a distinct anti war flavour – starting with Bob Dylan‘s classic Blowin’ In The Wind sung here by the magnificent Joan Baez. Pete Seeger‘s Where Have All The Flowers Gone became an anthem for lost youth. Good News Week by Hedgehoppers Anonymous sums up the state of the world at the time – and could easily apply now. Social issues are presented through Elvis Presley‘s poignant In The Ghetto, Stevie Wonder‘s Grammy award song Living For The City and the legendary Loretta Lynn with her satirical One’s On The Way. LGBTIQ+ favourite Lesley Gore sings the first feminist song You Don’t Own Me.

  • Don’t Sleep In The Subway – Petula Clark
  • Blowin’ In the Wind- Joan Baez
  • Living For The City – Stevie Wonder
  • Girls On The Avenue – Richard Clapton
  • Only Love/People Get Ready – Bob Marley

Other songs to feature are crossover singer Ned Miller with his big hit From A Jack To A King, Bill Justis with his dance number Tamoure and Jimmy Gilmer‘s Sugar Shack. The only Aussie song to reach the top ten was the king of rock n roll, Johnny O’Keefe and Move Baby Move. In 1963 the Beatles held the top two positions with number one I Want To Hold Your Hand and the number two song She Loves You. Mossy’s 1973 selection includes Aussie group Sherbet with Cassandra, Stevie Wonder‘s classic Superstition and Roberta Flack‘s stylish Killing Me Softly.

LEARN MORE Fans and critics have long debated the talents of both bands and the contest, which started when they crossed paths on the music charts shooting them to fame in the early ‘60s, is still being challenged.
Whilst the Beatles only lasted a decade (1960 – 1970) their music is still around. In contrast the longevity of the Rolling Stones sees them still performing after 60 years.
Of those listeners who contacted us, more tended to favour the Liverpool lads.

Sarah Brightman presents Anything but Lonely from the musical Aspect of Love. The Bee Gees would have Lonely Days, (and nights) without their woman.
Elvis’s rendition of Are You Lonesome Tonight showcases his beautiful voice and similarly, Karen Carpenter’s version of Neil Sedaka’s Solitaire, is a knockout.
The Four Seasons and Gilbert O’Sullivan refer to being Alone and Alone Again as does Tab Hunter with I’m Alone Because I Love You. Paul McCartney sings Man We Was Lonely,
Bobby Vinton highlights the loneliness of a soldier with Mr Lonely and Roy Orbison aligns himself with other lonely people in Only the Lonely.

Starting his career with this band he went on to became one... LEARN MORE This week’s songs relate to Felines and Canines and are themed as CATS and DOGS.  Rob discloses his fondness for cats and chats about one clever cutey named Edipuss (Edie) while Mossy, because of her allergic reaction to cats, says she prefers the company of dogs. Some felines are referenced in songs by American doowop group The Tokens (The Lion Sleeps Tonight), Survivor’s Grammy winning (The Eye of the Tiger), John P Loudermilk’s (Paper Tiger) sung by Sue Thompson and the lyrical delight of Harry Chapin’s chart topper Cats in the Cradle. The evergreen Rolling Stones offer their version of Walking the Dog, six Grammy winner, the late Etta James, refers to her man as being a Watchdog and Cat Stevens in 1966 is loving his dog.

For instance roses are nearly always a token of love although there can be variations. Jimmie Rodgers heads the program with his folksy catalogue of English flowers in an English Country Garden. Warm voiced Dan Fogelberg sings of the roses at the end of a horse race in the poignant Run for the Roses. Lyn Anderson uses the adage I Never Promised You A Rose Garden to good effect in the song of the same name. Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond strike the right note of sadness and regret in You Don’t Bring Me Flowers while Bobby Darin‘s swing style in Artificial Flowers seems strangely at odds with the lyrics. Aussie contributions come from a young Johnny Farnham Rose Coloured Glasses and a short song from Bandstand regular Sandy Scott with Wallpaper Roses.

LEARN MORE UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS theme focuses on Australian artists and songs in celebration of Australia Day.  Diana Trask (Long Ago Last Summer), Lana Cantrell (Cant’Take My Eyes Off You) and Pat Carroll (All Kinds of Everything) headed off overseas in the 60’s in search of, and indeed achieved, international fame. ARIA winner Kerrie Biddell  (Oh Me Oh My) and Alison McCallum (Superman) realised their potential during the 70’s. Two legends Normie Rowe (It’s Not Easy) and Russell Morris (Sweet, Sweet Love) were popular in the charts and the group The Throb in ‘66 were doing well with their interpretation of Fortune Teller.
Pioneering country band Bluestone had a top 20 hit in the early 70’s with Wind and Rain and Stylus (World of Make Believe) were successful in the US touring as a supporting act for George Benson and Ike and Tina Turner. Bobby Bright presents a sensitive version of Would You Believe, Love while the whacky Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band delivers a true blue approach to their song Australia.

Some of our selection include references to the head and its features. Paul Anka and Australian Lyn Randell both refer to the head in Put Your Head on My Shoulder and Going out of My Head. The eyes are favoured in raspy voiced Kim Carnes’ Bette Davis Eyes’, Alan Parsons Project’s grammy winning Eye in the Sky and Gene Pitney’s Looking through the Eyes of Love. Another facial feature is highlighted in Cliff Richards’ Lucky Lips and the Go Go’s (with Belinda Carlisle) Our Lips are Sealed and Johnny Crawford sings about the proboscis in Your Nose is Gonna Grow. Blues rocker Rod Stewart’s focus on the lower limbs is the basis for Hot Legs, Anne Shelton refers to the upper limbs in Lay Down Your Arms, while the Beatles and the Pointer Sisters sing about grasping body parts in I Want to Hold Your Hand and Slow Hand.

LEARN MORE Diana Ross had two stellar careers – one as the lead singer of sixties super group The Supremes and later as a solo performer. Jimmie Rodgers was a popular crossover singer throughout the 50s and 60s. Today we concentrate on the solo career of Diana Ross presenting some of her biggest hits: Theme from ‘Mahogany, Upside Down & Reach Out (Touch Somebody’s Hand). In the 80s her career was revived through the wonderful writing and composing of Barry Gibb with her knockout hit Chain Reaction. Jimmie Rodgers burst onto the scene in 1957 with three smash hits: Honeycomb, Kisses Sweeter Than Wine and Secretly. He also achieved success with the religiously inspired Just A Closer Walk With Thee. Jimmie’s versatility and his warm, gentle light tenor voice come to the fore in The Long Hot Summer from the film of the same name.

Award winning performer Daryl Braithwaite achieved gold with his One Summer score. Two of our favourite LGBTIQ+ performers include the romantic, soulful tenor of Johnny Mathis with his version of I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face and the distinctive mezzo soprano of Dusty Springfield with her delivery of You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me.
