Kenny and Macca talk to Professor  Peter Greste,  an award-winning journalist, author and academic who spent fifteen years with the BBC before he joined Al Jazeera as East Africa correspondent. In 2013, he went to Egypt to help cover the unfolding political crisis but two weeks into the assignment, security agents raided his hotel room and arrested him and two colleagues. They were charged with terrorism offences, and in the subsequent trial they became champions of press freedom. All three were eventually convicted and sentenced to between seven and 10 years in prison, before being released under intense international pressure.

Peter saw his trial and conviction as an extreme example of the way journalism was being attacked in the War on Terror globally, and wrote about his experience in The First Casualty, He joined the University of Queensland as UNESCO Chair in Journalism and Communication in 2018 where he continues to campaign for the freedom of journalists.

In honour of his campaigning, Peter has been given numerous awards including a Walkely (2014); the British Royal Television Society’s Judges Award (2015); the Australian Human Rights Council Medal (2016); the RSL’s ANZAC Peace Prize (2016); and the Australian Press Council’s Press Freedom Medal (2018).

Nevena and Macca are joined live on the phone by Peter Kurti, Director of the Culture, Prosperity & Civil Society program and is also Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Law and Business at the University of Notre Dame Australia.

He has written extensively about issues of religion, liberty, culture and civil society in Australia, and appears frequently as a commentator on television and radio.

In addition to having written many newspaper articles, he is also the author or editor of a number of books, including The Tyranny of Tolerance: Threats to Religious Liberty in Australia; Euthanasia: Seven Questions about Voluntary Assisted DyingSacred & Profane: Faith and Belief in a Secular Society; and Beyond Belief: Rethinking the Voice to Parliament. Peter is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an ordained minister in the Anglican Church of Australia.

In his most recent paper, Kurti, argues that, “that Australia’s democratic institutions must learn to manage, rather than resolve, deep moral disagreement. Building on the pluralist tradition of Isaiah Berlin, John Gray and Bernard Williams, this report contends that conflict between legitimate but incompatible values is a permanent feature of free societies. It warns against the illusion that political consensus can be achieved through neutrality, proceduralism or abstract ideals alone”.

“Liberal democracies must instead draw defensible lines — imperfect, contested, but necessary — that allow diverse groups to live together under common rules”.

Fiona and Macca talk to Fr Peter MacLeod-Miller, as they discuss the controversial topic, is the Anglican Church Dying?

Father Peter Macleod-Miller is the rector of St Matthews Anglican Church in Albury, an important regional church with a colourful past and, thanks to Peter, a vibrant future. This modern community welcomes everyone with a warmth and generosity that have attracted nationwide media attention. But the road to St Matthew’s has been paved with shadows. From a childhood in Sydney’s leafy northern suburbs to the cloistered wonders of St Andrew’s Cathedral, Peter’s ascension to faith involved personal and spiritual trials that included forbidden love, an AIDS pandemic and many other theological hurdles.

His own quarries of doubt were both institutional and personal and led him as far afield as an English parish on a par with the BBC’s Vicar of Dibley. Peter has become the ‘sand in the cossie’ of the Anglican Church for good reason: his quest to achieve inclusion and equality within the church for marginalised communities has pitted him against the fusty paternalism and dogma that still thrive within the upper echelons of the institution. Despite this, Peter’s passion for his flock and for humanity at large has held him steady. His ministries over his life show the difference one person can make when they practice what Christ truly taught. His story is a testimony that love, humour, fun and outrageously good ideas make us all worthy of much more than gathering up the crumbs under God’s table.

Father Peter Macleod-Miller’s life and work is the subject of a new book by Neal Drinnan.

Nevena and Macca talk to  Peter Kurti – Centre for Independent Studies: The End of Tolerance

Peter Kurti is a senior fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies and an outspoken commentator on religion, ethics, and civil society. He’s the author of The End of Tolerance, which examines the growing tension between freedom of expression and efforts to regulate offensive or ‘intolerant’ views in contemporary society. Peter argues for the importance of maintaining open dialogue—even when it’s uncomfortable—and warns against the unintended consequences of policing belief and speech. With a background in both law and theology, Peter brings a unique perspective to one of the most pressing debates in modern Australia.

“One of the principal tenets of a secular liberal democracy is tolerance of difference, especially religious difference. It’s a tenet that was hard won in the course of a series of bitter and bloody conflicts between princes, prelates and people that raged across Europe from the 17th century onwards.

Tolerance is also a principle that lies at the heart of the liberal conception of citizenship, which embraces the civic idea that members of a society recognise one another as free individuals worthy of equal concern and respect”

Macca and Fiona talk to Matteo Vergani. Associate Prof, Deakin University; Antisemitism Special Envoy;

The Albanese government has named Jewish lawyer and businesswoman Jillian Segal as the county’s first antisemitism special envoy. The appointment was made in response to rising incidents of violence against Jewish people against the backdrop of the Gaza war. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government would also soon appoint an Islamophobia special envoy.

Antisemitism special envoys are not an invention of the Albanese government. They exist in many countries, including Canada, the United States and Germany.

In Australia, the antisemitism envoy’s responsibilities will likely include recommending stronger anti-vilification laws and better reporting of hate crimes. This will also likely include better support for hate crime victims, leading education and advocacy activities to combat anti-Jewish sentiment, and attending international conferences to discuss antisemitism with other global envoys. The envoy will report directly to the prime minister and the minister for immigration, citizenship and multicultural affairs.

Nevena and Macca talk to Alex McKinnon, journalist, on ALP Senator Fatima Payman, Crossing the Floor over Palestine.

The first-time senator became the first federal Labor politician to cross the floor in 18 years;

A senior Labor figure has ruled out the expulsion and suspension of first-time West Australian senator Fatima Payman after she voted against the government on a Greens motion recognising the statehood of Palestine.

On Tuesday afternoon, the 29-year-old defied her colleagues and became the first Labor member to cross the floor in 18 years.

While her move risked expulsion or suspension from the ALP, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said neither of these sanctions would be applied to Senator Payman.

“This is a difficult issue. Fatima has made clear that she continues to maintain her Labor values, that she wants to represent the people of WA in the Senate as a Labor senator, as she was elected at the last election … There won’t be any expulsions or any activity of that kind,” he told the ABC on Wednesday morning.

Macca and Paul talk to Anne Manne, Author, Crimes of the Cross, is an Australian writer, essayist  and social philosopher. A former columnist for The Australian and The Age, she has written many essays about contemporary culture, especially for The Monthly magazine. Her books include Motherhood, So This Is Life, The Life of I and a Quarterly Essay, Love and Money: The Family and the Free Market.

Crimes of the Cross:  The Anglican Paedophile Network of Newcastle, Its Protectors and the Man Who Fought for Justice,  Anne Manne:  A searing expose of institutional child,
abuse, and the remarkable story of the, survivors who would not be silenced

For many years, Newcastle was the centre of an extensive paedophile network run by members of the Anglican church – and protected by parishioners and community members who looked the other way.
In this gripping book, Anne Manne reveals how this network was able to avoid detection for so long, and how its ringleaders were finally exposed and brought to justice. At the centre of the story is a survivor, Steve
Smith, who endured years of childhood abuse but refused to be silenced.

Drawing on extensive research and interviews with survivors, clergy, police and others, Manne explores how the network operated and how it became entrenched
in the upper echelons of Newcastle society. She offers deep insights into the minds and strategies of abusers, and pays tribute to the victims and their tireless struggle for justice. Child sexual abuse has previously been
thought of as an individual crime; Manne pioneers an examination of it as part of a network. This is an unforgettable study of courage and faith in the face of unthinkable evil.

‘This story gripped me from the first page and refused to let go. The courage expressed, the vividness of the
writing … This book is a singular achievement, and I cannot recommend it more highly.’ —Jess Hill,
author of See What You Made Me Do

Fiona and Misha Ketchell, , The Editor, The Conversation: :Meta (Facebook) VS Australian Media

Last week we learnt that Facebook (Meta) is getting out of the news business to avoid paying for journalism under the Australian Government’s News Media Bargaining Code. Naturally as journalists we are disappointed – jobs will go – but no one is surprised. Facebook is doing what it has always done, which is to pursue its interests ruthlessly.

For over a decade Facebook courted the Australian media, now it has tossed it aside. Its conduct brings to mind the old fable of the scorpion and the frog. The scorpion wants to get to the other side of the river and asks a frog to carry it. The frog agrees, even though it fears the scorpion will sting. Halfway into the crossing, the scorpion stings the frog. It is in my nature, the scorpion explains.

So it is with Facebook, which convinced Australia’s media that it was a good idea to produce high-quality content and put it on Facebook for free. When ACCC chairman Rod Sims came up with a plan to make Facebook pay, out came the stinger. Facebook removed news from its Australian platform and threatened to withdraw from publishing news altogether. (It’s currently using the same tactic in Canada to avoid similar laws.)

In some markets Facebook’s popularity is waning, but it persists because it is engineered to be addictive – just like smoking and arguably as toxic. A few years ago whistleblower Frances Haugen claimed Facebook knew its products were harmful but it put profits above user safety. That was just the tip of the iceberg.

Facebook has a well-documented history of allowing hate, threats and misinformation to flourish. It also allowed Cambridge Analytica to scrape data from tens of millions of users and use it to aid political candidates, including Donald Trump. Profiting from misinformation and disinformation is core to its business model. The campaign of character assassination on Facebook against the Philippines-based journalist Maria Ressa speaks volumes about the company’s commitment to journalism, journalists’ safety and human rights.

A few years ago, Facebook flatly refused to pay SBS and The Conversation for journalism under Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code. We were disappointed – the money would have allowed us to produce more fact-based journalism written by experts to inform public discourse. It could have helped us in our mission to use facts and evidence to bring people together at a time when the half-truths and propaganda circulating on social media are tearing them apart. It would have helped Facebook show it cared about fighting misinformation.

But perhaps we dodged a bullet. The Albanese government now has the option of “designating” Facebook under the News Media Bargaining Code to force it to pay for journalism. If it were to do so, there’s a very slim chance Facebook would pay up. More likely it would just pack up and go home.

Either way we’d be better off. As journalist Peter Greste wrote in his analysis for The Conversation last weekend “Meta’s interests are not the same as our democracy’s. Meta doesn’t need high-quality news, particularly if its users are more interested in sharing family photos than sober reporting on inflation rates. But collectively, our society does need it.”

In Australian law there is a concept known as “unconscionable conduct” that describes people who trick others into believing something for profit. It’s not a bad description of what Facebook did to the Australian media over the past decade. It’s what it will continue to do to communities around the world – it’s in its nature.

So what can you do? Encourage anyone who gets their news from Facebook or Instagram to sign up to a reputable news service. The Conversation‘s daily newsletter is free and a good place to start. We also have specialist weekly newsletters, including Science WrapBooks & Ideas and New Zealand Weekly. Or if you are reading us on your desktop at home or work, bookmark our homepage.

In Australia, at least, we don’t have to give the scorpion a free ride.

Macca and Fiona are joined live in the studio by Josh Burns MP, McNamara and Misha Ketchell, Editor the Conversation, as they break down the Voice to parliament referendum.

Some of the questions raised in this conversation:

                                                          Voice response
Indigenous groups who supported the Voice campaign ended their week of
silence, accusing Australians who voted “No” of committing “a shameful act
whether knowingly or not, and there is nothing positive to be interpreted
from it”.

● In an open letter to the prime minister issued on Sunday evening, the groups said “that people who came to our country in only the last 235
years would reject the recognition of this continent’s First Peoples — on our sacred land which we have cared for and nurtured for more
than 65,000 years — is so appalling and mean-spirited as to be utterly unbelievable”

● The letter attributed the historic referendum loss to a lack of bipartisan support, as well as “lies in political advertisement and
communication” and racism

● “The proposal was tracking 60% support compared to 40% opposition for several years until the National and Liberal parties
preferred wanton political damage over support for some of this country’s most disadvantaged people,” the letter added (The
Guardian)

● Some Aboriginal leaders are understood to have distanced themselves from an earlier draft of the statement, circulated among
about 50 Indigenous people and organisations, and did not want their names associated with it (SMH)

● The official statement moderates the criticisms of that draft version, removing sections accusing Indigenous “No” leaders Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, Senator                                                              Kerrynne Liddle and Nyunggai Warren,  Mundine of being “front people for three right-wing organisations”, along with criticism of News Corp (The Age)
● Also removed was praise for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s “gallantry” in defeat as well as criticism for his failure to blame “No”voters
● There was little reflection on where the “Yes” campaign could have done better, amid separate revelations some within Labor thought “it was chaotically organised, its                                                  messaging verbose and imprecise, that it too often appealed to the converted” (The Saturday Paper)
● Leading “Yes” campaigner Thomas Mayo has tried to glean some positives, arguing that “though the referendum failed, the movement
for Indigenous rights and recognition has grown” (The Saturday Paper).

● But results maps very well to the result of the republic referendum in 1999
● Strong correlation between education/wealth and propensity to vote Yes
● Do we need to improve civics education?
● Is meaningful or progressive change possible in our system?

Kicking things off talking about religious discrimination and our call for people to contact us with personal stories, then intersex in ACT and then Stand Up Against Hate.

GBTIQ+ people still face discrimination at religious schools and in religious organisations. Laws across the country mean that this discrimination can be legal. To help us fight this discrimination and change these laws, we need to hear your experiences. It can be difficult to convince decision makers that these reforms are urgent and important. Hearing first hand stories of LGBTIQ+ people’s experiences; from being made to feel uncomfortable at school, to losing jobs, to having to hide who you are, it all adds up to an urgent case for change. If you or someone you know has had a personal experience of LGBTIQ+ discrimination at a religious organisation, big or small, please share it here. This can be a very sensitive topic and your story will never be shared without your permission.

Intersex legislation that will be passed next week in the ACT – first laws of its kind in Australia! We’re calling on other states and territories to get cracking and do the same.

Stand Up Against Hate campaign which calls for anti-vilification protections for the LGBTIQ+ community at a federal level and in some states.

Banning conversion practices – commitments were made by both major parties ahead of the NSW election and we’d like to see some action soon, SA has also committed to acting on this but no legislation as yet.

We also have Ayesha from SalamFest. In 2017, an SBS study found that 31.6 per cent of respondents had ‘negative’ feelings towards Muslim Australians. With the government’s impending Religious Discrimination Act, the statement calls on the Coalition and Labor to remove all anti-discrimination exemptions that allow religious organisations to discrimination on the basis of sexuality, sex, and gender identity.

Should you be concerned about the content of this Podcast please call Lifeline on 13 11 14

“I am going to depart a little from our usual show run today in what has been a momentous week for justice in Victoria and Australia.

I want to talk a little about the sending to remand prison this week of Cardinal George Pell prior to his sentencing. George Pell is just one of too many people who have abused their status and positions of unchallenged authority to abuse the most vulnerable in our society, our children, and our future.

Just as Jesus had 12 apostles, so did Victorian justice on December 11 when the virtues of our Justice system saw a jury of 12 of his peers find George Pell guilty of five serious sexual offences against young boys who were in the care of the church , his chuch. He sexually abused them, he abused his position of trust and you know what he thought he got away with it.

George Pell will appeal his conviction and that is his right, but it is also my right as a survivor of child sexual abuse in a religious institution to speak for myself and to speak up for all those who don’t get heard, who are not believed, who the system ignores and who fear they will never see or receive justice

I took on my old school over my sexual abuse and I was ultimately vindicated. The man who did this to me was too gutless to face his crimes in court, he took his own life. Like many institutions they did nothing when I reported it all those years ago, but I got justice. Its a tough gig, but I stood up and demanded to be heard and i got justice for me and others. I have endured the cost of that all of my life and will continue to pay the cost of that, as do the many thousands of victims and survivors across our communities. But I did it because what happened to me was wrong and standing up and being counted is and was the right thing to do.

Today, George Pell is in solitary confinement for 23 hours, he will be in despair, he will be frightened, he will be lonely, he may well be considering self harm , well George welcome to the world of child abuse. That is what we the survivors have had to endure all of our lives as a result of the abuse and breach of trust by criminals like you

I don’t care what happens to George Pell as long as its justice, he believes in God, so he says, and accordingly he will meet his maker one day and will have to answer for his crimes to a greater authority.

I cried this week when George Pell’s conviction was made public, I cried for the two boys who were abused by George Pell , one of them who is no longer with us, I cried for the men and women I knew and know who were also abused in other places and are no longer with us and there are many, I also cried for a justice system that did its job, I did not cry for George Pell . He deserves to rot in prison till the end of his life.

That would be a just sentence as he has destroyed at least two lives, so an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is I think fair. George Pell will understand this better than most

I want all of you listening now to spare a moment to think of the victims and survivors of child sexual abuse, think about how it might feel to have your trust abused, the confusion you feel and the fact that the system in almost every case works against you and justice. They all deserve a moment of your time and I would like you to today recognise them by taking a minute out of respect for their pain and suffering and their pursuit of justice.

From one survivor to another, I stand with you

Thank you”
