Book Reviews: The Eyes of Gaza, Feast While You Can, All Systems Red, The Monkey’s Mask

The Eyes of Gaza offers an intimate glimpse through the eyes of 22-year-old Palestinian journalist Plestia Alaqad, capturing the experience of living through the first 45 days of the 2023 genocide in Gaza. Formatted in the style of a series of diary extracts – reminiscent of Plestia’s own journal, and her poignant social media posts during the peak of the crisis – the book endeavours to illustrate the expected horrors of her experience while also showcasing the indomitable spirit and innate humanity of the people of Gaza.

This book catalogues a tapestry of deeply human experiences, telling the heartfelt stories of the men, women and children that share Plestia’s communities. From the epicentre of turmoil, while bombs rained around her and devastation gripped her people, she witnessed their emotions, their gentle acts of quiet, necessary heroism, and the moments of unexpected tenderness and vulnerability amidst the chaos.

Plestia Alaqad, a Palestinian journalist and poet, has emerged as a vital voice in the midst of the Israel-Gaza war, offering the world a poignant and unfiltered glimpse into the heart of its destruction. At just 22 years old, Alaqad has captivated an international audience with her gripping coverage, which erupted on October 7, 2023. Through her social media channels, she has shared the harrowing realities of life under siege, her vivid dispatches resonating deeply with millions across the globe.

As the war intensified, November 2023 saw Alaqad and her family forced to flee Gaza, escaping the relentless bombardment first to Egypt, and then to Australia. Now settled in Beirut, Alaqad continues to wield her voice with unwavering conviction, illuminating the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people. Her advocacy transcends borders, drawing attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and calling for justice and freedom.

Plestia Alaqad’s story is one of extraordinary bravery and resilience. Her eloquent chronicles not only document the devastation of her homeland but also serve as a powerful call to action, urging the world to recognize and respond to the profound injustices faced by the Palestinian people.

Feast While You Can

A monstrous-yet-sexy queer horror novel guaranteed to keep you up all night…

There is a monster inside of Angelina Sicco. All she wants is to walk her mongrel dog, hold court with her brother in their local dive bar, and bait hot queer women to her sleepy, conservative hometown, Cadenze. The problem is, so does the monster. It wants what Angelina has done, it wants what she’s going to do. It wants to eat her whole life, and every version of every future she might have with it.

Until it possessed her, the famous monster of Cadenze lived deep in a pit inside the mountain. But on the night when Angelina runs into her brother’s ex, the sternly handsome Jagvi, the creature rises hungry and ready to eat. Its claws comb through her private thoughts, her most intimate and traumatic memories. Only Jagvi’s touch repels it, but the monster feasts on all the mess that makes up a life, and Angelina Sicco’s has never looked tastier. What will Angelina do to protect her future? And just how much will it cost her?

All Systems Red is a 2017 science fiction novella by American author Martha Wells. The first in the Murderbot Diaries series, it was published by Tor.com. The series is about a cyborg designed to protect humans on a research mission. The cyborg narrates the story and calls itself “Murderbot” By Martha Wells.

The Monkey’s Mask” is a totally unique experience. It’s poetry. It’s a crime thriller. It’s where high art meets low life, passion meets betrayal, and poetry faces profanity on the streets of a harsh modern city. Dorothy Porter’s internationally bestselling verse novel holds you in its grip from the first verse paragraph to the final haunting pages.

“The Monkey’s Mask” won the Age Book of the Year for Poetry in 1994, the National Book Council Award for Poetry and the Braille Book of the Year. It has been adapted for stage and radio and is currently being adapted for film. The book has been widely translated and published overseas.

In Bruce’s most recent essay he discusses the crisis that could hit the Trump presidency if the USA and Iran become entrenched in conflict.

“Suddenly, Donald Trump’s presidency is on the line. Will there be war or Iran’s “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER”, as Trump has demanded on his platform Truth Social? At home, will Americans revel in Trump’s “Golden Age” of economic miracles or be mired in recession? If Trump stumbles in Iran, and if his “one big, beautiful” domestic policy legislation fails in Congress, Trump will be a lame duck for the balance of his term as president”

Girl Masters: Badham/McCartney is a bold, intergenerational conversation between feminist artists Lauren McCartney and Van Badham that interrogates “mastery” as a gendered concept.

This dual exhibition confronts the tension between the public and private realms of feminist expression, with the artists exploring how time, shared history, and personal evolution shape their practices. McCartney, celebrated for her satirical critiques of male art-world paradigms, presents intimate, delicate watercolour renderings of traditionally masculine grids, while Badham – once McCartney’s teacher and now mentored by her former student – returns to visual art through theatrical digital compositions and found objects.

Together, they stage a subversive, multi-voiced inquiry into who gets to be a “master”-and where, how, and under what conditions “girls” can assert mastery at all.

Throughout his career, Kenny experienced first-hand the thrill and cost of high performance, coming close to burnout himself.
Now an ICF-accredited coach and certified NLP practitioner, Kenny works with ambitious men to help them achieve sustainable success without sacrificing their wellbeing. His powerful “Redlining” framework draws on a motorsport analogy to help men recognise the warning signs of physical and emotional overload — and learn how to shift gears before they crash.
Kenny speaks with the insight of someone who’s lived the highs and lows of leadership, and the grounded wisdom of someone who’s found a better way. Based in Melbourne with his partner and two beloved dogs, he credits them as the three loves of his life who help keep his own redlining tendencies in check. When he’s not coaching or consulting, Kenny can be found behind the mic at JOY as both co-producer and occasional host.

LEARN MORE Peter Kurti is a senior fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies and an outspoken commentator on religion, ethics, and civil society. He’s the author of The End of Tolerance, which examines the growing tension between freedom of expression and efforts to regulate offensive or ‘intolerant’ views in contemporary society. Peter argues for the importance of maintaining open dialogue—even when it’s uncomfortable—and warns against the unintended consequences of policing belief and speech. With a background in both law and theology, Peter brings a unique perspective to one of the most pressing debates in modern Australia.
“One of the principal tenets of a secular liberal democracy is tolerance of difference, especially religious difference. It’s a tenet that was hard won in the course of a series of bitter and bloody conflicts between princes, prelates and people that raged across Europe from the 17th century onwards.
Tolerance is also a principle that lies at the heart of the liberal conception of citizenship, which embraces the civic idea that members of a society recognise one another as free individuals worthy of equal concern and respect”

LEARN MORE Ali Khan is a 2019 Churchill Fellow and a passionate advocate for addressing domestic violence in LGBTQIA+ communities, particularly among gay men. A survivor himself, Ali travelled across the globe researching how different countries approach family and intimate partner violence within same-sex relationships. His findings have informed groundbreaking policy recommendations in Australia, highlighting the need for inclusive support services and greater awareness of the unique challenges faced by queer men. Ali now works with organisations and community leaders to create safer environments and provide culturally sensitive pathways to healing and justice.
Having lived experience of domestic violence, he understands the challenges facing queer people accessing support and negotiating the justice system which primarily views victims as heterosexual women, and abusers as heterosexual men. He started sharing his story among his friends in the gay and lesbian community and learnt not only had some of them also had experienced domestic violence, they faced similar challenges in accessing support.
He started thinking about whether there were some strategies and ideas which could be adopted by the ACT to enhance support for gay male survivors, based on the extensive work underway in overseas jurisdictions.
He then pitched his proposal to the Churchill Trust, was awarded a Fellowship in 2019, and travelled to Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom to conduct his research in 2023.

What’s the current mood in Melbourne’s hospitality scene: are we seeing recovery post-pandemic, or is the sector still crawling back to solid ground?

*
Many restaurant and bar owners cite rising costs as a key pressure point: how is the cost-of-living crisis affecting everything from ingredient prices to staffing decisions across the industry?

*
For diners who simply turn up for a meal, what hidden challenges should they know about?

*
What exactly does it mean to be an independent hospitality owner in Victoria today?  Why do a small group of people have such a strong – some might overwhelming – presence in Melbourne, in particular?

*
Looking ahead, what support or policy changes would make the biggest difference to Melbourne restaurateurs as they try to keep doors open and plates full?

LEARN MORE Some of the topics covered are:

*
How have figures like the Liver King and ultramarathon runners reshaped young men’s understanding of what it means to be “strong”?

*
To what extent do social-media algorithms amplify extreme fitness content, and what impact does that have on viewers’ behaviour and self-image?

*
What are the most common physical and mental health risks associated with pursuing “pain as proof” in the name of masculinity?

*
How do influencers balance -or hide – their use of performance enhancers, and what should viewers know about the authenticity of these extreme routines?

*
What healthier or more sustainable models of strength and resilience might offer young men alternatives to the all-or-nothing “toughness” that today’s fitness influencers promote?

They also discuss Sam’s latest article for The Conversation
“A new Netflix documentary about a shirtless supplement salesman who claimed to be “natural” and was exposed as a fraud might seem like a punchline.
But Untold: The Liver King is more than just a character study of a well-known fitness influencer; it’s a case study of performative masculinity in the world of social media.
Brian Johnson, better known as the Liver King, built a brand on extreme workouts, eating raw organ meat, and evangelising about masculinity. He preached “ancestral living” and radical self-control, all while secretly using steroids.
And his rapid rise to popularity reveals how social media rewards the spectacle of hypermasculinity – especially when it leans into extreme behaviours.
Extreme self-discipline, extreme exerciseextreme eating and extreme “wellness” have all become forms of public performance on social media”

Queer Cities is an exhibition that addresses issues of LGBTIQA+ inclusion through spatial interventions that preserve queer heritage — past, present and future. Visualising LGBTIQA+ visibility in public space is an important factor in making urban environments feel more inclusive. Recognition of the presence of queer people and their heritage in public space not only means that LGBTIQA+ people see themselves represented, making diversity visible helps public spaces become more accessible for other marginalised groups. This exhibition surfaces the voices of LGBTIQA+ and gender diverse people to recognise and celebrate queer lived experience, narratives and histories specific to public spaces and commemorate these stories through a spatial intervention.
Professor Gene Bawden is Head of Design at Monash University, and Dr. Jess Berry is a Senior Lecturer in Design History and Theory. Together, they co-curated Queer Cities, an exhibition exploring how queer identities shape and are shaped by urban spaces, as part of Melbourne Design Week 2025

LEARN MORE Nominations have opened for the 2025 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards. Do you know an LGBTQIA+ elder who deserves to be platformed?
For more than 30 years, the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards have celebrated the contributions and achievements of older Victorians.
Platforming people over 60 who share their skills, time and energy with the community.
This year, the awards include a new category, the Emerging Impact Award.
Recognising an individual who is new to volunteering and is making a significant impact in their local community.
For decades, we’ve heard that elders in our LGBTQIA+ community were stepping back into the closet.
But over the past decade, something has changed.
Our elder LGBTQIA+ community have come together to celebrate and elevate their voices.
And with the support of the Victorian Government continue to shine for all their worth, no matter their age.
Max Primmer is a vibrant force in Victoria’s LGBTQIA+ community who doesn’t just challenge stereotypes about ageing, he rewrites the rulebook.
He is a proud radio host, drag queen, community connector, and fierce advocate for inclusive ageing.
Celebrated throughout our regional communities, Max is a volunteer, a mentor, and a truly beautiful human,  proving that age is no barrier.
Max was the 2023 Ageing Well Award recipient for the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.
A moment he counts as “probably the most exciting thing that I’ve had happen to me.”

Having worked directly to minsters as a policy and political advisor, Angus understands the inner workings of government decision making and brings this knowledge and understanding with him to every engagement.
Angus spent the better part of his ministerial career working within the social portfolios of education, communities, disability services and seniors, as well as being an advisor within an economic super portfolio covering infrastructure, agriculture, trade, and tourism. In these portfolios he worked on small grants schemes through to major infrastructure programs and bilateral agreements of more than $4billion. Angus also spent time working through the process for State budget bids as well as bilateral agreements between the States and Commonwealth governments, often liaising directly with parliamentarians from government and the opposition.
Since leaving politics, Angus has worked with a variety of social sector and purpose-led organisations and leaders, supporting them to create and embed systems for effective government engagement and advocacy. Angus has experience supporting clients in every state and jurisdiction in Australia, having helped clients achieve sector firsts in the delivery of ministerial policy statements through to improved funding certainty and associated outcomes. Underpinning these successes is Angus’ ability to connect with people, understand their mission, and work alongside them to accomplish their goals and objectives.

This compelling historical narrative breathes life into the people and places of the era, immersing readers in a vivid sense of immediacy and intimacy.
Drawing extensively from unpublished and previously unseen written accounts, oral histories, letters, and archival materials, Under the same Moon offers a deeply personal exploration of the lesser-known Australian campaign in the Middle East. It captures the dramatic separation of a group of men from their Australia-bound convoy and their arrival in Java, teetering on the brink of collapse. The narrative also illuminates the fears and anxieties of families left in the dark.
This unforgettable story of love, camaraderie, bravery, and courage is laced with humour, suffering, and beauty. Through its rich narrative, Under the same Moon invites readers to experience the profound human connections forged in times of turmoil.

LEARN MORE Having worked directly to minsters as a policy and political advisor, Angus understands the inner workings of government decision making and brings this knowledge and understanding with him to every engagement.
A proud member and advocate of the LGBTIQ+ community, Angus was Co-Convenor of Rainbow Labor in Queensland before making the move to Sydney. Angus’ personal journey, coupled with his experience working in social portfolios supporting marginalised and disadvantaged Australians, engendered within him a deep and enduring sense of compassion and empathy. Angus is driven by these experiences and is highly motivated by the work he does to support the important social and societal change being driven by his clients.

LEARN MORE He is known worldwide for his 2014 arrest and subsequent jailing on terrorism charges whilst working for Al Jazeera in Egypt. He was released after 400 days of imprisonment.
His ordeal has been made into The Correspondent, starring Richard Roxburgh, released in cinemas this week and garnering huge critical acclaim.

Professor Peter Greste is an award-winning journalist, author and academic who spent fifteen years with the BBC before he joined Al Jazeera as East Africa correspondent. In 2013, he went to Egypt to help cover the unfolding political crisis but two weeks into the assignment, security agents raided his hotel room and arrested him and two colleagues. They were charged with terrorism offences, and in the subsequent trial they became champions of press freedom. All three were eventually convicted and sentenced to between seven and 10 years in prison, before being released under intense international pressure.
Peter saw his trial and conviction as an extreme example of the way journalism was being attacked in the War on Terror globally, and wrote about his experience in The First Casualty, He joined the University of Queensland as UNESCO Chair in Journalism and Communication in 2018 where he continues to campaign for the freedom of journalists.
In honour of his campaigning, Peter has been given numerous awards including a Walkely (2014); the British Royal Television Society’s Judges Award (2015); the Australian Human Rights Council Medal (2016); the RSL’s ANZAC Peace Prize (2016); and the Australian Press Council’s Press Freedom Medal (2018).

LEARN MORE Son picks  up on the recent ruling in UK High Court which we also discussed a bit last week with Anna Brown from Equality  Australia  after the Forum broadcast. The implications are less clear and unfolding daily.

In a blow for transgender people, the UK’s highest court has said that a woman is defined by her sex at birth.

JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series and a prominent anti-trans activist, has said the ruling was due to “an army” of female campaigners and had protected the “rights of women and girls”.
But Britain’s Supreme Court stressed laws preventing discrimination against people who were trans remained in place.
Judge Lord Hodge said it was “not a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another”, while Downing Street said the ruling brought “clarity”.
An LGBTI campaign group, however, condemned the outcome, describing it as an “incredibly worrying” development for transgender people and a “huge blow to some of the most marginalised people in our society”.

“The ad, which contained a rainbow flag, did not appear to include an official campaign endorsement, which would reveal who was behind the message. The banner was also attached to public property.
Another sign said: “LGBTQ+ means more to Julian Hill than you the people.”
Hill is a gay man who is in a relationship but does not have a husband. He said whoever had displayed the signs had resorted to “these sorts of smears as they’ve got nothing positive to say”.

Bruce is a regular contributor on US politics across media platforms in Australia. In recent years, Bruce has worked with the Democrats in Congress during President Barack Obama’s first term, and on the staff of Prime Minister Julia Gillard. He has also served as the former PM’s chief of staff.

Wolpe writes, in his latest article, see link below, that “Donald Trump loved “Liberation Day”. There he was on Wednesday afternoon, launching the biggest global trade war since the 1930s – the one that ultimately fuelled the Great Depression. Trump effectively sent flowers and a card signed “America First” to grace the tombstones of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organisation. Together, they had spawned more than 75 years of global liberalisation of commerce and economic growth. From the Rose Garden, a farewell kiss from the White House”
