On the eve of the AIDS2018 Conference in Amsterdam and fours years on from the AIDS2014 meeting in Melbourne, where the promise was “nobody left behind”, a major report has concluded that the response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic globally is at risk of “dangerous complacency”.

The electronic health records system has been in existence for several years but previously required specific patient opt-in and agreement for their information to be shared across their doctors and health care providers.

That default is about to change, with Australian’s key health information from GP visits, prescriptions, test results and imaging data such as x-rays to be made available in one secure electronic record – when you most need it. That is the proposed benefit but there are real concerns about privacy for the LGTBI community and how the reformed system will work in practice.

Tonight, in this special edition of The Informer, we hear from community about what they see as the benefits and concerns and how this impacts all of us. Whilst My Health Record might improve our health services it also raises concerns about who knows what about our sensitive health information.

Ian Muchamore speaks with Kent Burgess, Head of Services at Thorne Harbour Health about what My Health Record means for the community. He then speaks with Joshua Badge, an Academic at Deakin University on specific community concerns, and finally he speaks with Meredith Makeham, the Chief Medical Advisor of the Australian Digital Health Agency, the agency responsible for the rollout.

On this episode of The Informer we head to the LGBTIQ Women’s Health Conference that began in Melbourne. The fourth annual conference is proudly co-presented by Thorne Harbour Health and ACON and aims to create safer spaces to strengthen the health and wellbeing of all LBQ women, including Aboriginal women and Sistagirls, women of colour, women with disabilities, trans, gender diverse and intersex women.
This week is also NAIDOC Week, with celebrations and events held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Not only in Indigenous communities, but across all of Australia, from all walks of life.
The theme of NAIDOC this year is ‘Because of Her, We Can!’, celebrating the essential role that women have played – and continue to play – as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels.
Tonight on this episode The Informer, NAIDOC week and the LGBTIQ Women’s Health Conference intersect, as we hear the stories and experiences of indigenous sistagirl Elytta Adelaide Manton also known as Lismores Lilly, as well as hear from the panel discussion on Aboriginal Voices from the LGBTIQ Women’s Health Conference.
This episode of The Informer aired on JOY 94.9 & was hosted by Tom Morgan

At the close of today’s LGBTI Womens Health Conference, there was a brilliant panel discussion titled Aboriginal Voices with Nazree Dickerson, Dodie Eggmolesse, Esther Montgomery and Jackie Stewart facilitated by Allison Toby
Alison opened the panel by asking, being indigenous in any space is pretty hard, but what can we learn from our history of addressing LGBTIQ visibility in aboriginal and Torres strait islander communities, what works and what do you think doesn’t?
Here are some of the panels answers to that first question.
We will have a full podcast of that, and other panels from the LGBTI Womens Health Conference up on the JOY website soon.
Though we are heading towards the end of NAIDOC week, that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate, respect and listen to the voices, stories and history of the Indigenous and Torres Straight Island communities. And if you aren’t making space for their stories, it’s time to think about why!

That was what we were told after speaking with sistagirl  Elytta_Adelaide Manton also known as Lismores Lilly. As a child, she was raped and in order to remain a part of the system she kept quiet, so that she could remain living amongst the other girls instead of with the boys.
Miranda Sparks spoke to Lismore’s Lilly about her work with sistagirls in prison, as she shared what it’s like being an indigenous transgender woman.
The testimony is confronting to hear, and a part of a distressing conversation; but it’s one that needs to be shared, and an important one to listen to. But listener discretion is advised, this is a very moving yet heavy and raw conversation with Elytta_Adelaide Manton also known as Lismores Lilly.
But, it is important that we hear it.
The voices and experiences of the transgender population can often be silenced, disregarded or ignored. That cannot and should not happen.
But when you add another level of marginalisation, that of indigenous people, we need to listen, instead of assuming their experience is the same as the non-indigenous trans community.
In 2006, Lismore’s Lilly was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo chemo therapy and breast scrapings, and now she is raising funds so that she can have breast reconstruction. So that when she looks in a mirror, she can do so without the need to wear implants.

And WA’s Health Minister has restated his opposition to gay cure therapies saying people who come across professionals promoting counselling therapies should report them.

Now, on the Informer, we will hear from Chris and Robert, as they share their past experience trying to rid themselves of their homosexuality through this so-called therapy.

For many of us, being a part of the workforce means committing much of your daily life to a specific workplace environment, but unfortunately for many in our community, those environments aren’t committed to us. Despite advances in recognition and marriage equality in broader society, a lot of us still feel like we have to hide or censor our relationships and LGBTI identities when in our professional roles.
Luckily, some businesses are committed to changing this, and as recognised by the Australian workplace equality index awards, AGL is one of them.

When we talk about family violence we mean all families and relationships, no matter your sexuality or gender, but when it comes to research data and the focus of our attention in the family violence narrative, that has been about heterosexual family violence.
So where then, do the LGBTI communities fit in the narratives of family violence?
The Victorian Government is provided funding of almost $100,000 for a ground breaking participatory project to help prevent family violence in LGBTI relationships to help to change this.
The grant will allow Women’s Health East to work with young LGBTI people to investigate and co-design appropriate and relevant resources that will support the development of respectful relationships across the state.
Dean Arcuri found out more as he spoke to Kristine Olaris, the CEO of Women’s Health East and Lara, the project lead for the new LGBTI Family Violence Preventions Project for Women’s Health East.
This segment aired on The Informer on JOY 94.9 on 10th July 2018 & was hosted by Dean Arcuri.

Why was this change needed and what does it represent? We find out with CEO Simon Ruth.
Plus, how safe do gay men really make queer spaces for women?
We look at this issue from a very different perspective tonight, as we talk to drag performer Menorah Foxx, who is also a cisgendered straight women, and find out if they really get to let their guard down when in a queer space.

Gay men, have you ever thought about how you really treat women in queer spaces? I mean really thought about it?
Are they the inclusive space we want it to be for all, or is it just inclusive for you?
Menorah Foxx is a drag performer in Melbourne who surprised me when she told me that she was actually a straight cisgender women.
When Menorah came to us wanting to share her story, it was one that we think a lot of gay men need to hear.
While we can all agree that more needs to be done to create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone, are we really doing our bit to make that happen or are we just part of the problem?
