This show takes a dip into the Sea of JOY. Surfing has maintained its straight image for too long however a growing number of surfers have come out in recent years. This show particularly hears from some of the Australian surfers who have done so and includes excerpts from the Australian documentary Out in the Line Up, a story about the first group of surfers to march at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the emergence of Westerly Windina (formerly Peter Droun). Completing the soundscape is waves of Australian surf, soundtrack and seascape music including one of Sir Robert Helpmann’s surfing novelty songs.
Sources include the World Wide Wave (JOY 94.9) interview with Ian Thompson, the Writer and Director of Out in the Line Up.
