Dr. Ivan Holmes was in active service in World War II defending Australia against Japanese invasion in Papua New Guinea. Now 85 he recounts the stories of World War two vividly, and as his generation are dying, it’s good that we can hear their stories, and understand were we as a country have been. Most of us will never know what it is like to be in a state of war. Most of us will never have to face the consequences of military conflict. Apart from the obvious tragedy of warfare, there are a lot of very painful psychological factors that must effect the solders’ who are deployed into a war theatre.
Dr Holmes shares his story with us and the consequential outcomes. There are some comments in this story that may be seen as racist, We have decided to leave them in as this illustrates the impact and lingering consequences of war.
