Within Australia HIV Positive Women have been described as a ‘Minority within a Minority’. In 2006 there were approximately 1500 Australian women living with HIV. In 2007 there was a 25% increase in reported cases within Australia.
HIV Positive Women are from all walks of life, with many different experiences. For women, living with HIV it can be difficult managing the pressures of everyday life, work and caring for a family.
Today with the Medical advancement HIV Positive Women have a long life to look forward to, as was not so in the early 80’s when we had little or no understanding of HIV or AIDS.
Social awareness of HIV and AIDS has improved since the 80’s, but there continues to be a social stigma attached to people living with HIV or AIDS.
HIV Positive Women, activists, advocates, educators, carers and supporters have played and continue to play vital roles in destigmatising HIV, educating with facts, and supporting women.
Today we’re talking to Anne Phelan who may be best known for her role as Myra Desmond in the long running TV show Prisoner.
