My Single Of The Week is Beyonce with Pretty Hurts. Actually, I identify so much with this song … LOL. I’ve been waiting for a good diva workout of a track from her latest album and this may be it, cos most of the other remixes have been pretty darn ordinary so far, though Monsieur Adi did a good job with XO, and Beyonce deserves the best. After all, she didn’t attend the Kimye wedding … she got taste.
Here follows tonight’s playlist. Tune in to us this Saturday on JOY 94.9 from 6-7pm for a bakers dozen of fab-u-lous tracks. Your host is Dick.

What Have I Seen ThIs Week ? Heaps !
Film: Sunshine On Leith : Imagine a Scottish Mamma Mia, but with songs by the Proclaimers. The plot was about three couples, a mum/dad, their son and daughter, and their respective partners. The son and the daughter’s boy friend were soldiers back after a term in Afghanistan. All 3 relationships went through a lot of problems and happiness, all to music. It was much better than I was expecting, the music was good and I went through 3 handkerchiefs, cos there was a lot of sad bits.

Film: Bad Neighbours : Just a bit of fun, starring Zac Efron (looking nice ‘n furry). A college fraternity (of which Zac is the leader) moves into a residential area next to a Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne. Naturally, the fraternity makes a lot of noise and a war starts between the neighbours. It’s all about the pranks, and some of them are very funny, especially the mystery of the car airbags.

Film: The Winters Tale (Ballet) : A new ballet from the Royal Ballet in the UK, filmed by NT Live, and based on the Shakespeare play. It was the tale of 2 childhood friends who get split apart when one of them, now the King, thinks that the other has been sleeping with his wife made her pregnant. This was a very intense 3-act performance, full of imaginative scenery, amazing dancing/acting and very stirring score.

Film: The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night : Another NT Live production of a new British play. Just when you think theatre has gone as far as it can along comes a play like this. It concerned a young autistic lad, whose mission was to find out who killed the neighbours dog. Along the way we are transported into his world, a strange and at times confusing world. He had to contend with school, marriage split ups, and his autism. At times it was heartbreaking to watch, but at other times filled with such joy. How they did it, I don’t know but it was an amazing experience.

DVD: Bridegroom : SA beautiful and heartbreaking documentary about what can happen when one of a gay couple dies, and the conflict between the remaining partner and the parents of the deceased. Bring on marriage equality and don’t forget to make a will.

Comedian : Russell Howard : He’s a fearless young British comedian, with a TV show called Russell Howard’s Good News (worth a look). He was in town with his stand-up show, and although very funny at times, it was also a bit hit and miss. The funny bits were hysterical, but occasionally he would head off on tangents which didn’t always achieve worthwhile results.
3 out of 5
Comedians : Topp Twins : They are two lesbian NZ twins, the other side of 50, and very funny. They did a long show (over 2 hours) highlighting their 4 main characters. There’s Camp Mother and Camp Leader, Raylene and Brenda (two very country girls), Ken and Ken, finishing up with “themselves”. The act is a series of sketches and mainly country music songs. Hard to describe, but for fans of NZ, the simple things of life and country music loving lesbians, then this is your show. Loved it.
