Show 517 / 17 October 2015
Welcome to A Touch Of Pink, your home site for a look at the fun side of modern pop. I’m back on air after some time off to rest and recuperate.
There’s so many great fun pop tracks around at the moment and I’ve tried to narrow my first week back to some of my fave’s including Erasure, a couple of Girls Aloud solo’s, Bright Light Bright Light, Lady GaGa (don’t you love her in the latest American Horror Story Hotel), and our favourite Romanian, Inna.
My Song Of The Week is “Why” by St Petersburg based dance act The Villars (aka Rodion Lapin – see below). Rod Thomas (aka Bright Light Bright Light) connected with him on tour in Russia opening for Elton John. So good luck to them and a nice piece of nu-disco.
Here follows tonight’s playlist. Tune in this Saturday on JOY 94.9 from 6-7pm for a bakers dozen of fab-u-lous tracks. Your host is Dick.

What have I seen at the theatre/multiplex lately? Going backwards in time …
FILM : The Martian: starring Matt Damon as an astronaut left on the distant planet when his team left him for dead during a storm. It shows how he manages to survive whist NASA tries to rescue him. Not bad but lacked a bit of tension.
FILM : The Intern : Robert De Niro as a senior citizen on work experience in a fashion company run by Anne Hathaway. This is just a nice sweet movie about friendship and respect. Take your Mum.
FILM : Pan : A prequel to Peter Pan, much like Wicked and The Wizard of Oz, but not as much plot. The visuals are amazing, Hugh Jacman is very OTT, a fun film but probably not a classic.
FILM : Last Cab To Darwin: A different take on the voluntary euthanasia, about a guy with cancer wanting to end his life before things got too bad. It’s well handled, and a little sentimental, but a great story and sensitively handled relationships.
FILM : Holding The Man : RA gay classic about a couple in the 80’s, one develops AIDS and it’s the story of his partner looking after him until his death. Very moving and a reminder of what AIDS did for the gay community in the 80’s. And not in a good way.
Other recommendations :
Olly Murs live in concert. Such a sweetie, and he can sing.
The Queen Extravaganza. Wonderful tribute to the band showcasing the band’s rockier tracks.
What we saw in London in August ….
Bend It Like Beckham The Musical : : Wonderful musical remake of the film story with an original soundtrack, particularly the Bollywood influences.
The Commitments : Another film made into a musical and well done with some excellent performances, but not a major highlight.
Dear Lupin : A play based on a memoir of a father’s letter’s to his wayward son. Beautifully performed and full of witty and erudite advice that the son only came to appreciate after his father had died.
The Railway Children : Another production based on a book/film, about a family left to manage after their father is jailed and accused of being a spy. Set in the English countryside and the railways, this is a spectacular production, which involved a 20-metre train coming into the theatre at a critical moment.
Sunny Afternoon : A musical based on the early career of 60’s rock band The Kinks, from their formation up to the release of their big hit Lola. Very involving show about the real-life conflicts between the member of the band including the brothers Ray and Dave Davies. Great tunes and a wonderful show.
The Play That Goes Wrong : A play about a drama society putting on a 1920’s murder mystery, and as per the title, anything that could go wrong, does. Sets fall apart, things collapse etc. Timing is everything and this play was faultless. Hilarious from start to finish.
The Pupinni Sisters live in concert : For those unfamiliar with this trio of ladies, they do swing music in the style of the Andrew Sisters, with some modern songs thrown, also in swing style, such as Heart Of Glass and Chandelier. Brilliant voices and harmonies.
Briefs, an all-male cabaret : Six stunning performers from Brisbane with a very original show, yo-yo tricks, aerial acrobatics, drag acts etc. Who’d have guessed going all the way to London to see an Aussie cabaret but it was well worth the effort.
Dick’s Top 5 + 1 Videos This Week
Emin : Boomerang ft Nile Rogers (hot daddy)
Sarah Harding : Threads (you go GIRL ALOUD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S79_HGuRRts
Kavana : Déjà vu (another talented gay man)
Calogero : J’ai le droit aussi (sweet video about a gay boy daydreaming after a straight boy)
Inna : Bop Bop (very stylish in an Eastern European way)
Eva Simons : Policeman (trashy, but in a good way, Dutch electro pop)
That’s your lot ….. now sashay away …
