and the winner is: Young Artist of the Year – Niran Dasika

Niran Dasika spoke with David Moyle after winning his Australian Jazz Bell Award as Young Jazz Artist of the Year.  Suzaku is his latest album which was recorded with his Japanese Quartet in Japan. He started his quartet when living in Japan after finishing his degree.

Niran defines himself as a Jazz musician – in the broadest sense of ‘Jazz’, and acknowledges the important influence that his trumpet teachers had on him during his university education  (Scott Tinkler, Eugene Ball, and Paul Williamson).  He spends time exploring the sounds that he can get from the trumpet, after starting his instrumental career on a cornet in his local brass band.  He recalls the amazing James Morrison’s Scream Machine album which was on high-rotation in his listening list for over a year in his mid-teens.
