David Moyle from Bent Notes welcomed composer and improvising Trombone player Josh Bennier to the studio to chat about his Modular project and the release of the album recording this project – Modular.
Starting his instrumental experiences on the violin and piano, Josh eventually found the trombone more fun and drawing him more into the jazz realm.
He obtained his diploma at the Generations in Jazz Academy through the University of Adelaide and then moved to Melbourne, feeling truly at home in a city with so many Jazz choices.
The Modular project developed out of lots of unused musical ideas and snippets written by Josh across the years, but not used at the time. Josh collated these ideas and worked to link them together, essentially linking the ‘modules’ . Out of this work have come 7 brand new groove based pieces on the Album combining both a Jazz and Latin approach. Modular is released on Josh’s own Record Label – STATIC Records.
Josh has created this Modular music to enable the listener to enjoy it in an active, creative fashion – not simply sitting still in a chair!
Josh Bennier was guest of Bent Notes on Sunday February 23, 2020
